⇨ ALOLA

Who: EVERYONE.
When: Day 73 - Day 87
Where: The islands of Alola.
What: The Carnival arrives at its next touring location, a series of tropical islands inhabited by a species of animal called Pokemon and their trainers!
Warnings: Pokemon is pretty PG-rated.

IT'S A POKEMON WORLD

Alola is broken up into four different islands, with a number of unique points of interest. Boats can easily be rented in order to get between the islands, or you can just pay for the fair of a scheduled trip. If you can prove you have the skills for it, you can also call on a "Ride Pokemon" - that is, either a Charizard or a Lapras that will fly or swim you between locations.

► POPULATION: Though the islands appear very small as an abstraction in the actual games, that doesn't hold over into the actual reality of it. When interacting with the different locations, imagine that they are about as big and spread out as they would be in real life. It's about on the same scale as Hawaii is on earth. Ignore any wikis that say the population of each island is like 200 people, because that's just adding up all the scripted NPCs, and there are realistically more than six houses per town.

► AMENITIES: Even if they aren't overtly listed on island maps, it can be assumed that all towns and cities will have basic amenities - that is, places to eat, place to go to the washroom, places to buy souvenirs, and the other things one would expect in a tourist heavy area. You can also buy malasadas pretty much anywhere.

► POKECENTERS: You'll be able to find a Pokecenter in pretty much every town - a Pokecenter is a public building in which Pokemon Trainers can rest and get their Pokemon healed. Think of it like free international Pokemon healthcare. You can also buy Pokeballs here, as well as potions and other healing items for later use.

► AETHER FOUNDATION: A peace keeping organization that shelters Pokemon from harm and abuse. If you kill/maim any Pokemon or otherwise act violently in public, they will come to try to take you down with their Pokemon. They also are the main force working against Team Skull.

MELEMELE ISLAND
[MELEMELE DETAIL MAP] [GUARDIAN DEITY TAPU KOKO] [WIKI LINK]

► TRAINER SCHOOL: A full fledged for young, aspiring Pokemon Trainers! Students go here to learn about Pokemon care and battling before setting out on their own journeys. It would be sort of weird for an adult to show up here, like it would for an adult to try to attend an elementary school, but you can probably learn some of the basics just from touring the facility.

► HAU'OLI SHOPPING DISTRICT: The biggest shopping district on Melemele, you can do a lot here, from eating out to getting your hair dyed. A lot of shops are, unsurprisingly, completely Pokemon focused - but there are some that aren't, too. There are also some very nice beach fronts nearby.

► BERRY FIELDS: Berries come in a lot of different types and have different effects when used. Mostly, Pokemon love to eat them, regardless of what type they are. This is a big field of them, most of which are free to take if you catch them when ripe.

► TEN CARAT HILL: The secluded interior of a small mountain, filled with some rare types of rock Pokemon. You have to be able to bypass the left overs of some recent rockslides to get in.

► TRIAL SITE: There is only one trial on this islands, which is the Normal type trial. All you have to do is fight a bunch of Pokemon ferrets, and then fight an even bigger Pokemon ferret that thirsts for your blood. It's not so bad.

AKALA ISLAND
[AKALA DETAIL MAP] [GUARDIAN DEITY TAPU LELE] [WIKI LINK]

► TIDE SONG HOTEL: A big ass hotel near the port - if you want to stay on Alola overnight, this is a pretty good place to go. It isn't too expensive, and is also rather nice.

► DIMENSIONAL RESEARCH LAB: Alola, on occasion, has been the site of various dimensional breaks (haha) in which extraplanar creatures called Ultra Beasts have crossed over. There isn't much information about these beasts, but they are something that are being actively studied. Characters who are nerds might find some of this information interesting.

► HANO GRAND RESORT: The inevitably big, fancy resort that tends to take route in touristy places like this. If you actually pay to spend some time there, you can enjoy all the things you'd expect to find in a fancy resort, except with way more Pokemon. There is also a fancy, secluded beach for resort goers only.

► BATTLE ROYALE DOME: A battle area in which 4 trainers fight each other all at once, with teams of there Pokemon. The trainers here are mostly quite expert, and you need a team of three Pokemon to play, so player characters probably won't be able to participate. However, you can still come to watch, if you like seeing a bunch of colourful monsters slapping each other around.

► PANIOLA RANCH: A large ranch that keeps a lot of Pokemon that resemble earth farm animals. You can leave Pokemon here to stay for a while if you need a break from the strains of trainer life. Quite often, however, your Pokemon will end up getting knocked up and leave you with another egg to care for.

► TRIAL SITES: Brooklet Hill is a lake filled area that contains the Water Trial. You have to fight a bunch of schooling Wishiwashi, and then an even bigger schooling Wishiwashi to win. Wela Volcano Park contains the Fire Trial, where you must climb to the top of the dormant volcano, and spot the difference between a series of ceremonial island dances. Then you gotta fight a team of Marrowaks and a giant Salazzle. The Lush Jungle contains the Grass challenge, in which you have to find a series of rare organic ingredients in order to brew something that will lure out a giant Lurantis.

ULA'ULA ISLAND
[ULA'ULA DETAIL MAP] [GUARDIAN DEITY TAPU BULU] [WIKI LINK]

► MALIE GARDEN: A nice big garden to hang out in and chill. Also, there are Pokemon there... and also, Pokemon battles? There's really no end to it.

► MOUNT HOKULANI OBSERVATORY: Up at the top of the local mountain, you can go see a space observatory. Like most things in Alola, it's like a regular observatory, except with more Pokemon, since some Pokemon just straight up come from space. You can take a bus up here, but you can also hike if you want.

► HAINA DESERT: A shitty desert in the middle of the island. Mostly only good for if you want the kinds of Pokemon that live in shitty deserts.

► ABANDONED THRIFTY MEGAMART: A Megamart, but haunted. Extremely haunted, filled with the kind of ghost Pokemon that would actually kill you. You have to take a bunch of pictures of ghosts on your way through here if you want to beat the Ghost Trial.

► PO TOWN: The ramshackle remains of the town that Team Skull have taken over. It's completely walled off from the rest of the world, and is pretty terrible. No point in going in there unless you're fighting crime, in which case you can expect to get challenged to Pokemon battles by a lot of Team Skull knuckleheads.

► LAKE OF THE MOON: A huge, round temple thing in the middle of nowhere. It's used to praise a legendary Pokemon that existed years ago, but there presently doesn't seem to be anything around except cool architecture.

► TRIAL SITES: The Observatory contains the Electric Challenge, during which you have to fend off various kinds of electric grubs, before eventually taking on a giant Vikavolt. The Abandoned Megamart must first be cleared before challenging the Ghost Trial officially, at which point you will have to defeat a powerful Mimikyu.

PONI ISLAND
[PONI DETAIL MAP] [GUARDIAN DEITY TAPU FINI] [WIKI LINK]

► SEAFOLK VILLAGE: A village made of nothing but houseboats and other water fairing homes. It's the only major town on Poni Island.

► ANCIENT RUINS: Most of Poni Island has been reduced to ruins, over time. Not many people live here, relative to the other islands, but there are a lot of abandoned buildings from when they apparently used to.

► VAST PONI CANYONS: Most of the island is comprised of canyons, caves, and valleys filled with particularly strong Pokemon, and also a lot of fight-hungry Pokemon trainers. Most of them will want to fight you as soon as they see you, since they are there mostly to train, but they will back down if you tell them you're not a trainer. Though, at that point they will strongly urge you to go home, because it's too danger for anything other than the strongest trainers.

► ALTAR OF THE SUN: A matching altar to the one found on Ula'ula, except this time dedicated to a legendary Pokemon of the sun. If you play some magic flutes here at the right time then apparently a giant lion might show up, but there's no way to be sure.

► TRIAL SITES: The only Trial here is the Grand Trial, which is a fight against the leader's ground type Pokemon. You may also get lucky and have the Fairy Trial's kahuna deign to fight you, with her fairy types, if she randomly wanders into your path. Both of them are very strong, and are not advised to challenge for new trainers.
anti_nonsense: (Not my problem.)

Rita Mordio | OTA / will match format

[personal profile] anti_nonsense 2017-03-28 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
(melemele: hau'oli city / so cheery it's eerie)

[Rita can hardly believe it. After signing a contract for a full year of work with the ever-suspicious Ringmaster, her first order of business is a tropical vacation, of all things!? Naturally, she's skeptical. There has to be a catch.

But the locals who pass by greet her amicably, and some even offer samples of local food items. When a friendly older lady hands her a malasada, she takes it, but doesn't eat it right away. This easygoing, harmonious atmosphere, the strange creatures seen throughout the city… all of it is incredibly alien to Rita. Her foreign clothes and tense demeanor make her stand out as she stands around on the sidewalk, squinting suspiciously at the sweet-smelling food as if trying to determine whether it's safe to eat or not.]

Just what the heck's with this place, anyway...?

(melemele: hau'oli city beachfront / casual theft)

[While it wasn't easy for Rita to acclimate to her new surroundings, she's at least changed her appearance to something more Alola-appropriate. She now wears sandals, shorts, and a tank top, and her goggles have been temporarily replaced with a pair of sunglasses resting on her head.

She even made a new friend! A stray Litten seems to be warming up to her, and while she hasn't officially "caught" it, it's started following her around, and she rather likes its company. However, it's not exactly tame. The Litten does what it likes most of the time, and having found a human it's fond of, it now seems to want to show its affection to her in a very catlike way: with gifts.

If your character happens to be carrying something that isn't all that secure – a food item, accessory, trinket, maybe even their wallet – they may find it unexpectedly snatched by a stealthy cat Pokemon. Following the little thief will lead them straight to Rita, lying back in a reclining beach chair, reading a book. Oblivious to the crime, she doesn't even look up when the Litten deposits its prize on the sand in front of her.]

(ula'ula: abandoned thrifty megamart / spooky sightings)

[Rita approaches the creepy-looking abandoned Megamart, holding a borrowed Poke Finder and scowling as if the building itself offended her somehow. The Electric Challenge went easily enough for her, and if she wants to complete the Island Trial, she just has to get past this… nonsense. Easy, right?

Still… a "Ghost Challenge"? How is Rita supposed to take pictures of ghosts when obviously they don't exist? When she steps inside, she half-expects to find some kind of stupid trick waiting for her. It doesn't take long for her assumptions to be proven wrong. The rattle of a shopping cart draws her attention, and a mere moment later, a Haunter materializes and appears to lunge at her. It may be doing so out of mischief more than malice, but its intentions couldn't be farther from Rita's mind right now. All she knows is she doesn't know what it is, it came out of nowhere, and it's coming her way.

From outside the Megamart, a bloodcurdling scream can be heard, followed by an explosion. Should anyone come to investigate, they may find a terrified Rita conjuring and flinging fireballs at the offending Pokemon, while her Litten lazes about unhelpfully on a nearby counter.]

What do you mean?

[Psi asks, seemingly coming out of nowhere. In reality he'd just been walking nearby and overheard her.]

Oh, hey, are you going to eat that?
anti_nonsense: (don't come at me bro)

[personal profile] anti_nonsense 2017-03-29 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[Looking over to the... whatever-that-is that just talked to her, Rita gives a visible start. She's clearly not used to dealing with otherworlders, and this guy is possibly the weirdest one she's seen yet. She glances around; none of the locals seem to be reacting to him like she is.]

... The heck are you?

[The heck are you. Wow, okay, that's super rude, but clearly she can see through his glamour so...]

Oh, you work for the carnival? What's your name?
anti_nonsense: (Blah blah blah.)

[personal profile] anti_nonsense 2017-03-29 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[Rita narrows her eyes. Having been with the carnival for only a day, there are a lot of things that she hasn't picked up on yet. The notion of glamours, and how they work, is one of them.]

How can you tell?

kingsroads: (maybe don't DO that?!)

thrifty megamart!

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-29 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
[ Strange has spent a surprising amount of his time hanging out at the Megamart, partly because he's a creepy weirdo and partly because he's far more comfortable around the ghosts than some of the other Pokemon. Ghosts made sense. His world had ghosts and spirits, though they were of a different ilk than these purple things. His world didn't have foot tall rats or those odd looking bugs.

So, he's in a perfect position to hear Rita's bloodcurdling scream from inside the Megamart. Perhaps someone was in trouble? Obviously he had to go search out who it was and if anything was happening. A few moments later, Strange has found himself in the same room as Rita...and just watches as she flings fireballs at a Haunter.
]

Oh there's no need to be so dramatic, [ he responds, with a frown, paying more attention to Rita's fireballs than Rita herself. Obviously that was magic of some sort, a magic that he's far too interested in. ] I'm sure they were only trying to scare you.

[ Someone's obviously gotten used to the company of the ghosts. ]
anti_nonsense: (This is how I do things.)

[personal profile] anti_nonsense 2017-03-29 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[Rita pauses mid-spell at the interruption, a ball of fire hanging over her head and an intricate magic circle traced in reddish light under her feet. She looks between the Haunter and the man who just entered with a scowl, seemingly debating which to throw the fire at.

She ends up settling on attacking the Haunter as originally planned, but her hesitation gives it the opportunity to evade her spell. The flame soars past the creature, up to the ceiling, where it detonates, raining ash and debris over the already-messy store. The magic circle vanished as soon as she threw the fireball, and for now, she opts not to conjure a new one, instead turning her attention to the stranger.]

Yeah? And what the hell do you know about these things?
kingsroads: (maybe we can talk about other things?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-29 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[ As he spots that magic circle, Strange's attention goes right to it as he tries to piece out just what sort of circle it is, if she was using an incantation he knew, so on and so forth. He straight up ignores Rita until the circle vanishes. It's only then, with a little frown on his face, that he actually looks her in the eyes. ]

I've been here the past day or so. They're mischievous, not malevolent. The most one of them will do is try to scare you into leaving the building.

[ The Haunter lazily floats over towards Strange as if it's planning to use the magician as a barrier between it and that weird human who apparently knows flamethrower. ]
Edited 2017-03-29 17:17 (UTC)
anti_nonsense: (No one wants your manly musk.)

[personal profile] anti_nonsense 2017-03-29 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Rita's gaze follows the Haunter with a look that's a mix of nervousness and disgust. She's not sure what it really is (surely not an actual ghost), or how this weird guy can stand being around it. And spending a whole day in a place like this, willingly? What a freak.]

So they're trying to get in my way. Is that it?

[When Rita's in a mood like this, all words sound like fightin' words.]

raynos: WHY DID I HAVE TO BE RIGHT (evasive maneuvers)

casual theft!

[personal profile] raynos 2017-03-29 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Jamie'd taken his sunglasses off for like thirty seconds to reapply ridiculously strong sunblock to his nose and cheeks and see that his clothing was covering as much skin as possible, laying the glasses on a stack of crates in the alley where he was currently sheltering. His Zubat alerts him to the little firecat snatching his shades, leaving Jamie to watch in dismay as the thief exits the alley onto the sunny street.

He follows as best he can, but the sun is blindingly bright to vampiric eyes, and even with the Zubat trying to guide him he has a hard time not running into things. He finally stumbles to a stop near Rita's chair, shielding his eyes as though he's staring into a floodlight.]

'scuse me. Your - [Squint.] - lizard stole my sunglasses.
anti_nonsense: (look at all the fucks i give)

[personal profile] anti_nonsense 2017-03-29 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Rita looks up and turns to sit sideways on the chair, setting her book down with a bookmark neatly in place. Her proud Litten rubs itself against her legs. She looks from it to the squinting boy, frowning.]

Excuse me? How the hell does this look like a lizard to you?

[She seems more concerned with that apparent insult than the actual theft. Or the fact that the boy seems to really be struggling with the sun in his eyes.]
raynos: (completely clueless)

[personal profile] raynos 2017-03-29 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[Jamie frowns and leans forward, shading his eyes with both gloved hands as he peers at the Litten.] So what...is it? Look, I can't see too well when it's this bright out.

[...even though he's wearing a wide-brimmed hat and a sweatshirt with its hood pulled up. This doesn't look unusual at all.]
anti_nonsense: (Too bad.)

[personal profile] anti_nonsense 2017-03-29 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a cat. Obviously. [Rita's not the best at empathy.]

[However, she now bothers to look down and find the sunglasses that were left for her. She picks them up, dusts them off, and holds them out for the stranger.]

Something wrong with your eyes? [She raises an eyebrow. It isn't that bright out here, and even if it was, she'd think he's already beyond prepared for it.]

walkonedge: (we're not ready yet)

casual theft!

[personal profile] walkonedge 2017-04-01 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It's the first time that he's been to a beach in a while - the last time was back in the middle of winter when he'd wanted to be alone with Gabumon, so wandering onto Hau'oli City's beachfront in the middle of summer and having it chock-full of tourists is enough to distract him enough to almost miss the feeling of something swiping at the pockets of his jeans.

It's only when he puts his hands into his pocket that he realises that his harmonica is missing. A quick glance around after that reveals the culprit, a tiny cat who's currently running quickly enough away with the harmonica between its teeth that Yamato almost loses it while he's chasing the cat through the throng of tourists. ]

Hey. Hey! Give my harmonica back, you thieving--

[ It's only after he elbows a couple more tourists out of the way that he manages to find his destination, the Litten dropping its stolen prize in front of an uninterested Rita, who Yamato recognises from that girl in the mirror maze.

Well, that's a coincidence if he ever knew one.

Still, she's distracted enough by her book that Yamato figures it's safe enough to just lean down and swipe his harmonica back from the sand. He's frowning because now there's sand inside it and cleaning it is going to be troublesome.

He's clearly not expecting the Litten to hiss at him and spew out small fireballs. ]

What the hell?! [ He yelps, back-pedalling a bit and narrowly escaping the closest fireball.

Another glance at Rita, with another frown. ]

Oi, this cat is yours?
anti_nonsense: (Go tell someone who cares.)

[personal profile] anti_nonsense 2017-04-01 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm? Sort of. He-- [Belatedly, Rita finally looks up from her book. Upon realizing that some sort of altercation just happened, she shoots upright in her seat, casting her book aside for the moment. Seeing her agitated Litten, she goes ahead and jumps to conclusions.]

Hey, what do you think you're doing? You're upsetting him!

[She's talking to Yamato, who she assumes is just bullying the Litten for whatever reason.]
walkonedge: (find out your reality)

[personal profile] walkonedge 2017-04-02 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He makes an indignant noise, mostly because he's still reeling from the fact that the cat can spit fireballs, even though it's clearly not a Digimon.

What even is happening here. ]
Oi, it stole my harmonica first, why the hell would I upset it for no reason?

[ Another glare, this time directed more at the Litten, who's probably kind of still agitated and hissing at him when he reaches over to attempt another retrieval of said stolen harmonica. Even the Yagami's cat, Meeko, which is the only actual cat he's had the experience of meeting, doesn't have that much of an attitude. He holds it up once he's shaken the sand out of it, and it should constitute as indisputable evidence of her Litten's thievery. ]
anti_nonsense: (didn't see that coming)

[personal profile] anti_nonsense 2017-04-02 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Wh... why would it do that?

[She doubts him at first, but Rita can see the Litten getting upset at him retrieving the harmonica in question, and it gives her pause. It mewls and cries at Yamato now that the prize is out of reach, and seems to be getting ready to lunge at him again. Rita interrupts it by picking the Litten up and placing it in her lap, where it abruptly changes its tune and starts purring and rubbing against her hands.]

Oh, I get it... You just wanted to give me a present. [Her voice takes on a rare affectionate tone as she talks to the cat, petting it lightly, but then she glances back up at Yamato.] Wait... what are you doing here? [There's only one possibility, but...] You're working with the carnival now?

[ For the most part, Childermass wouldn't be bothered by a stray grabbing a random knickknack or stealing his food, but in this very particular case, what the Litten manages to lift is of a little more value than what he normally carries. It's almost embarrassing, actually, that he would look away for two seconds and turn back to find the Fire Stone he set down as he repacked his belongings missing. A thief being stolen from, of all the things...

But thankfully, while he didn't catch who took off with it, someone else certainly did. The Litten manages to get to the end of the block — on its way back to the beach, of course — before the Growlithe that had been dozing under the little cafe table Childermass had originally been set up at launches to his feet and rips off down the street after it, barking furiously the whole way.

That, in turn, has the magician grabbing his pack and... well, he doesn't run. He doesn't bother chasing. He can easily follow the racket the Growlithe makes to the end of the line. That means after the Litten deposits the Fire Stone triumphantly before Rita, it's going to be the dog giving chase that arrives first.

Kicking up sand and snapping after the Litten with no regard for Rita, at that!

[Hearing the Growlithe's charge, Rita's attention is torn away from her book, and when she sees it coming at her, she jumps out of her chair in surprise. The book falls to the ground.]

What the... hey! What do you think you're doing, you... dog! [The Litten, with its fur puffed up, leaps up to her shoulders, the Growlithe snapping after it. With a terrified squeak, Rita flinches and backs away, trying to keep the chair between them.]

No...! Ugh, get away! Back off or I'll blast you to smithereens!

[ The Growlithe menacing Rita and the Litten is, thankfully, short-lived. It wouldn't do for anyone to be blasted to smithereens, after all. A sharp whistle pierces the air and that brings the dog's attention snapping around, towards the source. Childermass has finally caught up and if it weren't for the additional feathers courtesy of the carnival, it would be easy to mistake him for a local with how he's sporting one of those ridiculous Alolan shirts — purple with white flowers.

But more importantly, his arrival and the whistle call the Growlithe to heel, which means he turns to dash back across the sand to Childermass. Of course, what's less helpful is that Childermass continues on right back to where he just called the damn dog away from.

He leans down to retrieve the Fire Stone off the ground first, then and only then does he actually take note of Rita.
]

You have my apologies, miss. [ He at least offers her that much. ] He was only chasing down your cat.

[The Litten seems to calm down a bit, sensing that it's no longer in danger. Rita, however, continues to stare warily at the Growlithe as if expecting it to lunge at her or something.]

H-hmph! Maybe you should put that thing on a leash.

[She looks questioningly at the stone he picked up, but glances again at where it was, then to the Litten, and a look of comprehension crosses her face. Most people might offer an apology of their own upon realizing what happened, but Rita is a bit less polite than most people.

Instead, her attention turns to those feathers framing his face.]

... You're with the carnival, aren't you?

[Yuya's a few aisles down, with his own camera and having abysmal luck trying to find any ghost Pokemon himself--at least he knows that's what they're called now.

It's pretty much impossible to miss the scream and lights coming from not far over, so immediately he's running around the aisles to the source.]
Hey, what's wrong?!

[With her hands still held out in a spellcasting gesture, Rita looks at the stranger, though she's still clearly agitated.]

What do you think? Th-that's what's wrong!

[She looks back sharply at the 'ghost'. The Haunter, having been blasted with a couple fireballs, wobbles weakly as it sinks toward the floor.]

What the hell is it!?

[Yuya follows her gaze.] I heard the only things here are people and "Pokemon" so... I guess a Pokemon? It looks kind of like a ghost...

[Ghost, Pokemon. Ghost Pokemon.

Yuya raises his camera and snaps a picture before the Haunter hits the floor.]
It doesn't look good. What'd you do to it?
anti_nonsense: (how predictable.)

[personal profile] anti_nonsense 2017-04-17 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
[A Pokemon... right. That's what she came here to photograph, after all, but seeing one that looked so... weird, it startled Rita so badly she'd forgotten all about that. She takes a deep breath and tries to compose herself before answering curtly:]

Blasted it with fire. [The Haunter groans pitifully.] It deserved it for jumping out at me like that.
