big top

Rita was supposed to be in the middle of enjoying her free time with a book (and perhaps a nap, as the fatigue caused by the tamashi-ka attached to her upper back has left her with little energy for much else) but her downtime ends up interrupted when a performer finds and asks her to fix the lights in the Big Top so they can continue their practice. Wasn't someone else working on that today? What a pain in the ass.

Grumbling as she walks, Rita makes her way to the control booth. She narrows her eyes at the weird-looking man inside, who appears to be the cause of her inconvenience.

"What are you doing? The lighting's a mess right now."

"Sorry, sorry, I know. I'm on it."

Greg shoots Rita an anxious little grimace by way of apology and presses his shades up again. He keeps fiddling with them--even light that comes from the corner of his eyes is driving him nuts.

"I'm--I'm figuring it out, there's something faulty going on with the system."
anti_nonsense: (Can you say that again but less stupid?)

His stammering doesn't do much to bolster Rita's confidence in him, so she goes ahead and starts looking over the settings. She might be the newbie here, but she already has a pretty good idea of how things ought to be set up.

"Are you blind, old man?" At least that might be an excuse to wear shades indoors while doing technical work. "This here is set way too low. And these are all wrong." She starts adjusting the switches, intending to set them back to their usual positions.

"What--no no no, hang on!" Greg spreads his hands out to get in the way. He's not blind yet, but he may be if she starts turning the switches back to standard.

"You can't turn them up, something's sure to blow!" He looks to her, beseeching. "I know this isn't the usual settings, but something's gotta be wrong with the wiring, or... it's a wreck."
anti_nonsense: (how predictable.)

Despite her doubts that anything's going to blow, the man's protests give Rita pause, and she steps back from the controls. "Fine. What's wrong with the wiring?" She immediately turns and starts looking over said wiring, but nothing hazardous catches her eye. "You sure you're not just imagining things?"

"I'm not really sure yet. That's what I'm trying to figure out." It could be an answer to either of her questions. "Everything looks okay, but..." Greg taps at a tusk, before gesturing to Rita. "But, maybe you can catch something I can't. Two heads are better than one, right?"
anti_nonsense: (I'm listening! Just not to you.)

Rita gives him a long, dubious stare, then drops her head to the side in a half-hearted nod. "Sure. Whatever." She'd really rather be napping about now, but Rita doesn't like leaving things half-finished. Since she already bothered coming all this way, she might as well solve the problem before leaving.

Still, the old man's not making any sense. He seems convinced that something's wrong, and maybe he does have more experience with these systems than she does... but everything really does look fine. Is there something she's not seeing? It is pretty dark in the control booth, and the lack of light from the stage area isn't helping.

From one of her pockets, Rita produces a flashlight and switches it on. She starts to shine it around the room, looking for anything that might be out of place.
