The light from her luminescent scales penetrates his darkness, just barely brighter than his eyelids' barrier, and blotting out the natural shimmer of the moon over the water's surface. He almost opts to wait it out, but by the time she's doubled back, his eyes are definitely open.
For a moment, there's an understandable vacancy of confusion; there's no mistaking her for an Atlantean, but her long silhouette and dramatic features make it difficult for him to distinguish anything human about her. At first, he thinks she's some kind of.... sea monster?
Identifying eyes doesn't help at all--it's only when he sees arms--and shoulders--that he can determine some kind of humanoid character and it clicks. Oh.
