When: Day 73 - Day 87
Where: The islands of Alola.
What: The Carnival arrives at its next touring location, a series of tropical islands inhabited by a species of animal called Pokemon and their trainers!
Warnings: Pokemon is pretty PG-rated.

Alola is broken up into four different islands, with a number of unique points of interest. Boats can easily be rented in order to get between the islands, or you can just pay for the fair of a scheduled trip. If you can prove you have the skills for it, you can also call on a "Ride Pokemon" - that is, either a Charizard or a Lapras that will fly or swim you between locations.

► POPULATION: Though the islands appear very small as an abstraction in the actual games, that doesn't hold over into the actual reality of it. When interacting with the different locations, imagine that they are about as big and spread out as they would be in real life. It's about on the same scale as Hawaii is on earth. Ignore any wikis that say the population of each island is like 200 people, because that's just adding up all the scripted NPCs, and there are realistically more than six houses per town.

► AMENITIES: Even if they aren't overtly listed on island maps, it can be assumed that all towns and cities will have basic amenities - that is, places to eat, place to go to the washroom, places to buy souvenirs, and the other things one would expect in a tourist heavy area. You can also buy malasadas pretty much anywhere.

► POKECENTERS: You'll be able to find a Pokecenter in pretty much every town - a Pokecenter is a public building in which Pokemon Trainers can rest and get their Pokemon healed. Think of it like free international Pokemon healthcare. You can also buy Pokeballs here, as well as potions and other healing items for later use.

► AETHER FOUNDATION: A peace keeping organization that shelters Pokemon from harm and abuse. If you kill/maim any Pokemon or otherwise act violently in public, they will come to try to take you down with their Pokemon. They also are the main force working against Team Skull.

► TRAINER SCHOOL: A full fledged for young, aspiring Pokemon Trainers! Students go here to learn about Pokemon care and battling before setting out on their own journeys. It would be sort of weird for an adult to show up here, like it would for an adult to try to attend an elementary school, but you can probably learn some of the basics just from touring the facility.

► HAU'OLI SHOPPING DISTRICT: The biggest shopping district on Melemele, you can do a lot here, from eating out to getting your hair dyed. A lot of shops are, unsurprisingly, completely Pokemon focused - but there are some that aren't, too. There are also some very nice beach fronts nearby.

► BERRY FIELDS: Berries come in a lot of different types and have different effects when used. Mostly, Pokemon love to eat them, regardless of what type they are. This is a big field of them, most of which are free to take if you catch them when ripe.

► TEN CARAT HILL: The secluded interior of a small mountain, filled with some rare types of rock Pokemon. You have to be able to bypass the left overs of some recent rockslides to get in.

► TRIAL SITE: There is only one trial on this islands, which is the Normal type trial. All you have to do is fight a bunch of Pokemon ferrets, and then fight an even bigger Pokemon ferret that thirsts for your blood. It's not so bad.

► TIDE SONG HOTEL: A big ass hotel near the port - if you want to stay on Alola overnight, this is a pretty good place to go. It isn't too expensive, and is also rather nice.

► DIMENSIONAL RESEARCH LAB: Alola, on occasion, has been the site of various dimensional breaks (haha) in which extraplanar creatures called Ultra Beasts have crossed over. There isn't much information about these beasts, but they are something that are being actively studied. Characters who are nerds might find some of this information interesting.

► HANO GRAND RESORT: The inevitably big, fancy resort that tends to take route in touristy places like this. If you actually pay to spend some time there, you can enjoy all the things you'd expect to find in a fancy resort, except with way more Pokemon. There is also a fancy, secluded beach for resort goers only.

► BATTLE ROYALE DOME: A battle area in which 4 trainers fight each other all at once, with teams of there Pokemon. The trainers here are mostly quite expert, and you need a team of three Pokemon to play, so player characters probably won't be able to participate. However, you can still come to watch, if you like seeing a bunch of colourful monsters slapping each other around.

► PANIOLA RANCH: A large ranch that keeps a lot of Pokemon that resemble earth farm animals. You can leave Pokemon here to stay for a while if you need a break from the strains of trainer life. Quite often, however, your Pokemon will end up getting knocked up and leave you with another egg to care for.

► TRIAL SITES: Brooklet Hill is a lake filled area that contains the Water Trial. You have to fight a bunch of schooling Wishiwashi, and then an even bigger schooling Wishiwashi to win. Wela Volcano Park contains the Fire Trial, where you must climb to the top of the dormant volcano, and spot the difference between a series of ceremonial island dances. Then you gotta fight a team of Marrowaks and a giant Salazzle. The Lush Jungle contains the Grass challenge, in which you have to find a series of rare organic ingredients in order to brew something that will lure out a giant Lurantis.

► MALIE GARDEN: A nice big garden to hang out in and chill. Also, there are Pokemon there... and also, Pokemon battles? There's really no end to it.

► MOUNT HOKULANI OBSERVATORY: Up at the top of the local mountain, you can go see a space observatory. Like most things in Alola, it's like a regular observatory, except with more Pokemon, since some Pokemon just straight up come from space. You can take a bus up here, but you can also hike if you want.

► HAINA DESERT: A shitty desert in the middle of the island. Mostly only good for if you want the kinds of Pokemon that live in shitty deserts.

► ABANDONED THRIFTY MEGAMART: A Megamart, but haunted. Extremely haunted, filled with the kind of ghost Pokemon that would actually kill you. You have to take a bunch of pictures of ghosts on your way through here if you want to beat the Ghost Trial.

► PO TOWN: The ramshackle remains of the town that Team Skull have taken over. It's completely walled off from the rest of the world, and is pretty terrible. No point in going in there unless you're fighting crime, in which case you can expect to get challenged to Pokemon battles by a lot of Team Skull knuckleheads.

► LAKE OF THE MOON: A huge, round temple thing in the middle of nowhere. It's used to praise a legendary Pokemon that existed years ago, but there presently doesn't seem to be anything around except cool architecture.

► TRIAL SITES: The Observatory contains the Electric Challenge, during which you have to fend off various kinds of electric grubs, before eventually taking on a giant Vikavolt. The Abandoned Megamart must first be cleared before challenging the Ghost Trial officially, at which point you will have to defeat a powerful Mimikyu.

► SEAFOLK VILLAGE: A village made of nothing but houseboats and other water fairing homes. It's the only major town on Poni Island.

► ANCIENT RUINS: Most of Poni Island has been reduced to ruins, over time. Not many people live here, relative to the other islands, but there are a lot of abandoned buildings from when they apparently used to.

► VAST PONI CANYONS: Most of the island is comprised of canyons, caves, and valleys filled with particularly strong Pokemon, and also a lot of fight-hungry Pokemon trainers. Most of them will want to fight you as soon as they see you, since they are there mostly to train, but they will back down if you tell them you're not a trainer. Though, at that point they will strongly urge you to go home, because it's too danger for anything other than the strongest trainers.

► ALTAR OF THE SUN: A matching altar to the one found on Ula'ula, except this time dedicated to a legendary Pokemon of the sun. If you play some magic flutes here at the right time then apparently a giant lion might show up, but there's no way to be sure.

► TRIAL SITES: The only Trial here is the Grand Trial, which is a fight against the leader's ground type Pokemon. You may also get lucky and have the Fairy Trial's kahuna deign to fight you, with her fairy types, if she randomly wanders into your path. Both of them are very strong, and are not advised to challenge for new trainers.

Trial Challenge, Take 1
► [Akala Island, Wela Volcano Park, sometime D73-75]

[A firey mountain... Snowy mountains were one thing, and lava-filled chasms with all kinds of terrible transportation were another, but this was strange and intriguing enough to draw Papyrus to exploration.

It had an excellent hike up the mountain, with even the occasional monster interested in a fight! A trial at the top, testing skills of observation, even better! But apparently the trials are for trainer and pokemon, not a lone disguised monster summoning his own bones.]

Wait... don't you have any pokemon with you? How did you make it up... [The trial captain frowns and vigorously shakes his head.] That won't do! The trial is only for a team, trainer and pokemon. We cannot perform our most spectacular dance for you alone.

Sandcastles are friends! Probably.
► [Akala Island, Hano Beach and Grand Resort, sometime D75-77]

[Another world full of oceans and sand, another chance to grace lives with the sight of sand Papyrus. With a little asking around, he learns the best beach on Akala Island is Hano Beach, accessible only through the most expensive resort. The resort is an opulent place, and Papyrus moves through it to reach the beach quickly. It's not nearly the sprawling and addictive maze that the celebration was, but... Still. Building sand skeletons is more appealing. Problem is...]

Hey, is that some Team Skull thing you're making there?

[The people here don't like skeletons! There's some rough, criminal group besmirching the good name of skeletons everywhere. Tempting as it is to offer the example of a good, admirable skeleton, there are other things he can make. Things like sand castles! They're very popular on this beach, some of them seeming to pop up around him the longer he sits here sculpting.

In fact, it turns out... some of them are even alive. The scouts mentioned 'animals' but it seems like pokemon really are a different kind of monster, made of all kinds of strange materials. He cheerfully greets the next sandgast that passes him, and invites it to enjoy his growing model of New Home. It... sure is interested in offering him its shovel, despite seeing that he's using the ammolite.]

Seasickness is no excuse for missing school!
► [Melemele Island, Trainer School, sometime D78-D83]

[As much as there is in just Akala, there are other islands in this world, and all sorts of ways to get to them. With how familiar he is with the Riverperson's offered rides, Papyrus opts for traveling by boat.

Traveling on the ocean is terrible. The choppy waves, bouncing them up and down. The motor, constantly running, keeping them moving forward.

Eventually they reach land, and he ever so briefly considers never leaving. But that wouldn't work for many reasons, least of which is that he does still have a job to do! Multiple jobs. One of which is learning enough about how friendship and fighting with these pokemon work. And where best to learn that than going to school?

The people at the school don't seem interested in sudden enrollment, though. They're much more keen to give him a visitor's pass, letting to walk around and learn the basics.]

Trial Challenge, Take 2
► [Akala Island, Wela Volcano Park, sometime D84-87]

[In his visits through the last several days, a few pokemon have gathered around Papyrus, connecting through curiosity and friendship.

The Cubone who'd followed him down the mountain the first time, fascinated and pushy about wanting to see more bones... The Sandygast that did just wanted to enjoy making sand sculptures, changing its designs a little to imitate his New Home design, and growing really excited about how the ammolite could change the color of sand... The Cutiefly that's been insisting on perching on his crystal crown, a nearly weightless friend that tickles without itching...

They've been enough for him to learn about being a trainer, shouting encouraging instructions to them in playfights with other pokemon. And now, they're surely enough to try that trial a second time!]

[What's that in the air? A BIRD? A CHARIZARD? A PLA-

No it's actually a bird, and it looks like a weird one even next to those here. Possibly because, once it's sure only Papyrus is looking, it turns back into Carly...complete with proper Alola garb and a pokeball at her side.
] Whoo~ That really is the only way to travel, after driving! [she cheers, throwing her ball down. Out comes her own spoiled-to-no-end cubone, the creature giving a yawn and a stretch. Recognizing her spa-mate from the Celebration, Carly now gives a wave...seeing how she has the arms to do so.] Papyrus~

How are you~?

[She's a scout so she has no questions about this place. SHE'S SEEN IT ALL...]

[Admittedly, there are plenty of talking animals in this world, and it would almost feel like home... if it didn't sound like they were all saying their own names over and over, in lieu of speech. So when he hears excited noises, coming from a direction most people can't be in, he looks up in time to see the bird's arrival. And transformation.

She has no questions, and he has no time for manners. Instead Papyrus jumps, gapes, and points a finger at her.]

You flew! And also turned into a bird?

[His own cubone buddy, out and exploring the school with him, is far less flustered by the idea of transforming people. Maybe she's a ditto, or something. Far more interesting is the sight of another cubone.

It lunges out towards the sleepier cubone and bangs its bone into the ground, all hey, pay attention to me.]
insidescoop: (HEH?)

[personal profile] insidescoop 2017-04-03 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Talking animals were definitely weird in Carly's world, but! She's been around so long that it's a little weird to think of a place not having something like that actually. Carly smiles quite proudly at Papyrus' exclamations however, nodding furiously.] Of course! Our magic still works here, you know!

[She looks down to the cubone, gasping.] Oh! And you have another cubone? [she shouts, 'Nuna' merely blinking at the other one. After about half a second, she stops looking at the other cubone though. 'Meh'.]
spaghettimonster: (WHAT???)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2017-04-04 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, but... How many people can turn into animals? [Why was Sans being so weird and secretive about it, if it's not a super unusual power? That brother of his, honestly.

Cubone fumes and complains, does the other cubone think she's too good for their company, or something? Gasp,, so offend.

Carly's enthusiastic gasp distracts them both from their respective irritations. Talking about the yet-to-be-officially-named cubone is far more interesting!]
Oh! Wowie! So do you!! Hey, you guys look a lot a like!

[personal profile] insidescoop 2017-04-04 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Mnnh....that's a good question. I never asked how many had that kind of spell, [Carly admits, crossing her arms. It might be worth making a survey for, actually-if she remembers, at least.

As it is, cubone! Carly beams, nodding as she looks from one to the other.
] Almost identical..! I guess if a pokemon is the same species, that's how it goes...it's strange, huh? I mean, cats and dogs can look totally different, where I'm from..!
spaghettimonster: (BROTHERLY AFFIRMATION)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2017-04-06 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[Papyrus nods agreement.]

Yeah, it's the same way back home. Some dogs look almost identical, and others look very different. And it's got nothing to do with anything! Just look at me and Sans. We're both skeletons, but...

[There are monsters who are related who look very, very different... and then other monsters, only barely related (thanks to the small population pools, there's not much chance for monsters to have zero connection) who look extraordinarily alike.]

[Scout walks slowly along the water's edge, long tail out behind her, low, so that the Togepi she's got trailing after her can hang on to the silky long hairs. Seeing another Carnival worker she waves.]

Hey! Careful with that guy. People were saying if you grab its shovel it can control you. I don't know if that's true, but, good to be informed.
spaghettimonster: (OH NO!)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2017-03-31 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[Papyrus scoots away from the sandygast, and looks after Scout somewhat alarmed. The cubone who's hanging out with him sniffs at his reaction, and sticks a bone in the base of the tower Papyrus was working on. It starts tilting and crumbling.]

Huh? Control? Like... the vampires could control people??
stillwinningthehardway: (🔪I throw my mantle over the moon)

[personal profile] stillwinningthehardway 2017-04-01 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe? Sort of? The compendiums they use here, they're called "Pokedex", they bring up possession. It's all gruesome details and sitting on piles of bone, and being its basement didn't sound like fun.

...But I actually did see a girl the other day who had a Sandygast as a companion and she didn't seem possessed. So maybe if you make friends and don't touch the red part you're fine.

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2017-04-01 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Sitting on bone...

[It's true, the sandygast seems content to just be friends, no longer shoving its shovel at him anymore. Instead, it's been watching his construction, and now his cubone's destruction.]

I don't know if you're like a dog, but if you are, I'm not offering sits! My lap's off-limits.]

[The sandygast looks between them, mutters Gaaaast like that says all that needs be said about their conversation, and continues to watch cubone's careful sabotage of the inert castle.

Papyrus shudders slightly at the way that sounds, like it echoes in his skull in inexplicable ways.]

Human bones are kinda hard to get at, so maybe you seem more comfortable!

[Her Togepi sees Wishiwashi jumping in the distance and decides to toddle into the water after them. Distracted by it, Scout uses her tail, which would drag on the ground for almost half its length if she let it, as a barrier. She's taken the creature into Carnival grounds and it knows her tail is there, even if the glamour hides it.]

No, baby, the surf's a little rough for swimming lessons. At least while you're this small.
spaghettimonster: (HUH???)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2017-04-04 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm very comfortable! Dogs love my lap.

[Between the sandygast not actually making any moves to turn him into a basement, and him getting the chance to brag about himself, Papyrus drops the previous train of thought like he's already forgotten his objections. Instead, he leans forward and watches the togepi's attempt at watery wanderings.]

'Baby'? Is that a very young pokemon?

[personal profile] whattaprick 2017-04-02 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
[ Lambert likes the ocean. It's big, and wide, and boundless -- things that should probably rightfully scare the shit out of him, but he finds them exhilarating instead. It's less claustrophobic than anywhere else he's been his whole life, and the bright blue is nothing like the cold, monster-infested waters around Skellige. So he stands at the prow of the boat, cutting a dashing figure with his newly-acquired golden tail and scales shining under the sun while his hand shades his eyes and he squints at their destination.

Of course, some people... aren't having nearly as much of a good time. He glances down where Papyrus is looking distinctly green for a skeleton, sharp teeth bared in a grin that seems twice as dangerous now. ]

You're not getting seasick, are you?
spaghettimonster: (UHHHH)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2017-04-02 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Sick? Of the sea?

[Papyrus tries to fix a confident smile on his face. Tries. There's too many things betraying his distress, with the green tint to his cheekbones, and the way his (rather less shiny or impressive) tail flicks back and forth. Sure, they're both hidden from the people of this world by the glamour, invisible even to the pokemon... but there's no missing the sound as his tail occasionally thwaps against the side of the boat.

Cubone's making a game of guessing its location, trying to pin the lashing bone tail down with a bone club. One of these times it'll even succeed, and the skeleton will really yelp and lecture them. Until then...]

Of course not, it's so... blue! And wavy! Nyeh heh heh... hurk.

[He cups his face in his hands and leans very hard against the side of the boat.]
whattaprick: (manpain)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2017-04-03 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
[ How is Papyrus even getting nauseous? Lambert genuinely wants to know. It's not as though he has inner ear bones for a sense of balance to be affected, nor does he have the digestive system to upset... or maybe it's all in the mind. With an insulting ease, Lambert crosses the small deck over to him, huffing softly at the tiny bony Pokemon at his side. He recognizes the species from exploring Alola with Carly, but he certainly hopes Papyrus's adoption was less dramatic.

He's also curious what's going to happen when Cubone catches that tail, eventually... it seems pretty determined. He probably shouldn't be giving Papyrus a hard time considering his own recent run-in with environs not to his liking, but ... ]

Don't get to ride boats much, where you're from?

[ Talking's a good distraction from the pain of living, right??? ]
spaghettimonster: arrt-jim-lad (WELL...)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2017-04-04 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[Biology gets a little messy and hard to follow when the people involved are made of magic, bodies of energy that dissipate into practically nothing on their demise. But the mysteries of the skeletons don't end there. Like, why does Papyrus occasionally forget that he has neither ears nor hair? The multiverse may never know.

He tries to gather himself, straightening with only a tight grip on the edge of the boat to show his nerves. His tail stops flitting around for a moment, befuddling the cubone.]

Oh, from time to time. The riverperson's around with their boat, sometimes. And running through the whole underground to visit the old house, it's quite the chore! But... a boat that runs up the river... it's a very different experience.

[Distraction, largely a success. There was always the other reason for taking the boat, one that brings a brief solemn shadow to his face. Not wanting to walk past Undyne's house, and be disappointed at not seeing her...]
whattaprick: (piss off)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2017-04-06 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
[ Papyrus is right, the sea is different from a river ... but to Lambert, it's not a bad difference. At least this isn't choked with monsters and mud and the occasional dead body. In the distance, shimmering shapes in the water seem to indicate more Pokemon are enjoying the clear waters as well. ]

You lived underground? [ Somehow, that's a detail that's never come up in previous conversation. It sounds gloomy. Though, if he thinks about it, isn't underground where a skeleton is normally supposed to be, anyway? ]
spaghettimonster: (WHAT???)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2017-04-06 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
[Papyrus whips his head around, surprised and staring at Lambert. Cubone's antics go on uncommented upon, especially since it's now pushing the bone around in search of bumping into the invisible tail.]

Yeah! Haven't I said? Back home, we're trapped underground behind a magic barrier. Coming to the carnival was the first time I ever saw the sky. Well... the sky itself. There's a few cracks in the mountain, in the palace. That must be why Asgore built it there.

[Elsa is going to go out on a limb and say that that is Sans's brother - either that, or the Carnival has picked up more skeletons than she thought.

She watches from where she's laid out in a beach chair as he builds whatever it is he's making with sand, as some of the Sandygast converge on him. She doesn't know what they are, but they seem harmless enough.

Or she thinks that, until she goes off to get a drink, and is told by a hotel worker that the Sandygast can enthrall people. Well, that's definitely bad.

She hurries back, setting her drink on her chair as she passes.]

You really need to stay away from those.
spaghettimonster: (OH NO!)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2017-04-13 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[There were other, unrelated skeletons in the Carnival some months ago, but they've moved on to other places. For now it's just Sans, Papyrus, and the unnamed skeleton in front of Lapis' trailer.

Papyrus alternates between using his own (gloved) hands to quickly build up large piles of sand, and the magical ammolite he purchased in Atlantis for fine details, to build surprisingly tall and sprawling constructions.

The fact that he has no plastic tools around, not even a tub, hasn't stopped the sandygasts from trying to offer their shovels. Maybe it's because, being made of the sand of the beach, they can sense what he is underneath the glamour. Maybe he just has one of those faces.

He looks back at the suddenly approaching person's voice, and sees a very blue person with gems of their own. Clearly, another (new?) coworker at the Carnival.]

Huh? Away from what?
handwringing: (let it go let it go)

[personal profile] handwringing 2017-04-19 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Those. [She repeats with a nod to the Sandygast. They ignore her as she steps closer, moving away from her feet and closer to Papyrus. She has to admit, his sand structures are pretty incredible, and she doesn't want them to be disturbed. She hopes the Sandygast will get out of here and leave him alone.]

The man in the hotel said bad things happen if you grab their shovels. Something about them being... ghost Pokemon?

[Ghosts in this world count as animals, apparently.]
spaghettimonster: (UMMMM)

[personal profile] spaghettimonster 2017-04-23 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[The skeleton freezes in place at her last words.]

What?? They're... ghosts?

[Papyrus swivels around to stare at the nearest sandygast. It's glaring at Elsa, its yawning gateway of a door somewhat scrunched down as it grumbles. There's no doubt that it's a living being, for all that it's made of a strange material.]

Hey, I'm not a ghost criminal. I don't need to take your shovel! You can rest assured, I'm content without it!
handwringing: (no wait that's actually terrible)

[Too bad for the sandygast, she's not that intimidated by a glaring pile of sand, possessed though it may be. She's ready to ice it if need be, although she's not sure how well that would work on sand.]

Going to the beach seems dangerous around here... [At least there aren't any pirates. Probably.] Who knew a ghost could attack out of nowhere...?

That's what makes them so spooky. Invisibility is a real kicker! It lets them kick you without any sign that they're there...

[The sandygast knows when it's not welcome (and when people really aren't going for it). It coughs a small cloud of sand at them, then trundles its way down the beach to try pestering some other tourists.]
