He wants to hold on to his anger, he wants to be mad at Lauren because then he can't be upset and empty, but he doesn't want Lauren mad at him, just as much as he doesn't want Lauren following him everywhere. Normally he'd leave right now, but normally he had magic to help him get out of here, or to try and get his way. All he has now is himself, and he's not even sure what that's good for.

And so where Lauren is probably expecting anger or yelling or something, instead he only gets Susan hiding his face in his arms at the table, not responding at all.
