He doesn't startle, but there's a definite flinch to his expression as he finds himself suddenly being spoken to be a human child. It's not as though he didn't notice the kid, but he he hadn't expected the boy to talk to him. He looks Steven up and down noting the pointed ears, and then he looks around the hallway noting the lack of other people. Hmmm....
