He doesn't understand a lot of what is happening (what is the Collapse? Who is Anath?), but he does know that the demon is hurting Doll. Whoever he is, he isn't kind to her; he can say he's trying to protect her, but someone who wants to protect doesn't hurt their charge at the same time.
