He startles, stepping back as Ginko's hand suddenly appears seemingly out of nowhere. It's only then that he realizes that Ginko is actually there at all. He'd been so distracted, and by nothing. He didn't even know what he'd been thinking about. He's both glad and embarrassed it was Ginko who caught him like this.
