A ball of illusions and people drugged to enjoy it... Employees whose smiles were constant and forced, with no signs of hobbies or personal interests, who never took initiative to advertise how great working for the Prince was...
Well, almost never. Rin did, after breaking curfew and getting caught and getting sent 'Beneath' until he was willing to sign up. Not the others. But the carnival, plenty were there willingly, and it was a year contract, and some left early on some special dispensation anyway.

Papyrus startles like a beak has pecked at his leg, and his tail settles with a decisive flop. Distracting himself with these rambling internal questions, instead of talking with his sad husk of a brother... Those worries can wait.
"Do you? It was terrible back there," he points out. It's so much easier to brush the statement off as, his nameless brother doesn't really mean that. That he's confused, that he doesn't know what he's saying... that he's really just expressing how badly he wants to get back to the rest of him, or at least the chance of reuniting with that lost core. "If you just want to stop feeling like this... it's going to happen! We're going to get the rest of you back from him. And then you won't have a master, you'll just... be you."
