He doesn't have any particular hope of escape, even when he's eventually left alone with the saltier of the technicians -- considering he may or may not be missing some parts of his anatomy right now -- but given the general flashing lights and how clearly distracted everyone is, it doesn't make sense not to take a chance. He speaks up, just loud enough to get the tech's attention.
"So does this ... happen a lot?" If he has to lose his spine, he's determined to at least keep his sense of humor, even if the words are dragged out and faintly slurred with pain (only partly for effect).
