As Rita works on the arm plug, Herbert will have some success with the face mask. It seems to be made of two pieces - the upper one that covers the eyes and ears, and then the lower one that covers the mouth and nose. The one that covers his eyes will detach after some careful tugging. Beneath it, Ignatius's face is intact.
His eyes hang half lidded, glowing a hazy purplish blue and staring into space, as if oblivious to everything going on around him. In fact, when Herbert first pulls off the mask, he barely reacts, making it seem unclear if he was conscious despite apparently having his eyes open.
But really, it just takes him a few moments to connect. What starts out as staring into space turns into dazed confusion as his eyes lazily focus on the people looming over him. There's an air of complete resignation to it, as if he wasn't even going to bother reacting to being messed with until he manages to process the fact that it isn't who he was expecting. His muscles all go taut at once, though all they can do is jolt uselessly against his bonds.
The plug will pull free at the same time, perhaps inspired by his sudden movement. While still gagged by the face mask, apparently bolted into his jaw on either side, his eyes are wild with desperate pain.
