Steven is focusing so much of his energy on growing the vines that he barely has a change to summon a bubble shield before the coldfire blasts strike. The pink bubble appears, and in immediately shattered by a direct blow, launching him back and into the wall of the tuck shop hard enough to leave a crater. The vines holding his gem in place break on impact, sending the gem twirling away to bounce across the flooring.
