But another stream of fire beats her to the punch, and she stops herself, hovering in the air with a ball of flames in one hand and a fiery whip in the other. He's gone. She failed to kill him. The realization stings more than it ought to. Surrounded by death and looming despair, she needs this anger to keep going. If she stops... if she turns her eyes away from her foe, she'll have to look back and see her friends dead and dying, and know that she might be next.
That's why she hesitates, her back still turned to the center of the room... until another source of light appears, one rapidly growing to become even more brilliant than herself. She turns to face the Ringmaster, her weaponry fizzling as she stares in awe at what might be their last hope.
