Put a smile on...
Who: Pearl and whoever is around...
What: Another gem finds her way to the carnival...she is not impressed.
When: Day 95
Where: The Backyard, The Big Top, The Cookhouse, and just around
Warnings: None...yet.
After running in to Steven in the mirror maze and figuring out that she had in fact done something to incur the need for a contract, Pearl had taken it fairly well. She didn't like it, but what was she going to do? Even if she hadn't, she couldn't exactly leave Steven here and now she needed to get an idea about exactly where here was.
Pearl had decided to start with the essential places: her new trailer, where she would perform, and where to find others. After looking at a map of the grounds she'd decided that the best place to start (aside from the trailers) was the Cookhouse. She wasn't a fan of food herself, but she could use the familiar layout of a kitchen to find some comfort in this place. Besides, if most lifeforms here required food it would be a good place to get some insight. A year wasn't TERRIBLY long for a gem, but it was enough time that she'd need to know a little more about this place, especially if she was going to be able to help Steven at all. He had three months on her and she needed to learn all that she could to "catch up" as it were.
If you meet her around the Backyard she is mostly looking at trailer numbers and trying to locate her own. This is similar to how she just wanders the carnival grounds just to see what she's gotten herself into and to familiarize herself with the layout.
Otherwise, she will make her way towards The Cookhouse and do a little people watching. She may get ahead of herself and clean up any tables that are left dirty or reorganize certain areas if there are more pepper shakers on one table and no napkins on another. She's an organized gem and sees it as her duty to make sure these things are sorted out if she's going to be staying here. You might notice she doesn't actually eat anything herself.
After that, her tour will take her to the Big Top, as even though shows have not begun yet this is where she has been assigned to work: as a performer. She wants to get a feel for what kind of act she can put on or what is already being done. You may see her try a few moves of dance or attacks with a spear to get a feel for the space. Just be careful not to get into a fight with her hologram Pearl, who may or may not be summoned to spar with her.

big top
Well, it's not like a dog can tell that's just a hologram. What he can tell is that someone is fighting something else! Clearly, she's in danger! And so he leaps up from where he had been told to sit and stay at and charges out from the backstage, barking at the hologram. Stupid thing is barely over two feet tall, so... not exactly intimidating here.

Pearl is concentrating hard when a few thins happen simultaneously. First, it's the flash of yellow and red out of the corner of her eye as the dog-like creature bounds in her direction. Second, she stumbles over her feet to stop her attack, gasping in surprise. Third, the holoPearl, seeing both the movement and hearing the bark, immediately turns her attention to the creature.
"New challenger approaches! Do you wish to engage in combat?" The holoPearl holds her spear forward, pointing it towards the creature.
"I don't think so," Pearl commands, stepping forward as she catches up to what it about to happen. She doesn't know what this thing is, but she already incurred one debt and she doesn't need a holographic version of herself to earn more. There's a flash and the holoPearl disappears.

He barks at her this time, but it's more happy yapping than any challenge to a fight.
Though he won't be bothering Pearl alone for long.
"Baker?" A voice from backstage calls. Childermass has since gotten back only to find the dog not sitting where he was told to sit, so he'll be stepping out to join them in the next few seconds. "Baker, leave her be."
no subject
She looks up when she hears a new voice. She hadn't thought about the fact that an animal would likely have a person to go with it. She calls back, "It's quite all right. Though I'm a little worried he almost got caught up in a duel."
no subject
"A duel?" For Childermass's own part, he gives Pearl a faintly puzzled look before looking around them. With... what? Well. Whatever it was, he can at least add when his gaze swings back around to her and then down to the dog at his feet, "He's fairly capable of defending himself, actually, but I am still glad he didn't actually get caught up in anything."
no subject
She looks back down at the creature. He looked fairly harmless to her, but she knew that appearances could be deceiving -- especially here. "Oh. I wasn't aware. Still, I wouldn't want to risk harming another being here on my first day," she says, pretty sure that would only result in more time added to her contract.
no subject
"A good plan," Childermass can agree with that sentiment readily enough, but if Pearl is going to be in the Big Top often enough, he decides he should at least demonstrate what he means, "But for future reference..."
He reaches into his pocket and takes out a what's more or less something as simple as a ping pong ball. Out of everything else he's found he can practice this particular trick with, these seemed to be plentiful and unimportant enough that no one would ever really miss a few.
"Baker," he says, a bit sharper than before, like it really is more an order than anything else this time. The dog-like creature notes it, too, and stops jumping and running around his master, suddenly attentive. Once he's sure he has his attention, Childermass will turn and toss the ball beyond the three of them and up into the air. "Fire."
Fire, quite literally in this sense. The dog doesn't go running off after the ball, instead turning the way it's been thrown and letting out a short burst of flame, a fireball aimed right at where the ping pong ball is about to fall through the air. Safe to say, it hits and outright incinerates the target.

And, she supposed he might have fared all right against holoPearl after all.
"I see. Well, I will certainly keep that in mind. That was rather impressive."
no subject
"Well done," he adds as he tosses the dog his little reward. That done, he looks over at Pearl once more. "He's from a world where creatures like himself are trained for combat." As way of explanation, but moving on. "Now what's this about a duel for your act, miss? I don't believe I saw anyone else out here for you to fight..."
no subject
"Oh! That. There's perhaps a lot to explain there, but the short version is I am able to create a light-construct duplicate of myself," she says, like that might make any more sense. "I suppose it might be easier to demonstrate," she adds in thought. After all, he had demonstrated the canine's fire capabilities. Pearl turned to the empty ring and focused her thoughts on her signature pearl on her forehead. It shimmered and then a beam of light projected forward, condensing into a familiar human shape. A second later there was a duplicate of Pearl standing there and, as she had said, there was a hologram version of Pearl standing there, mirroring the original's stance.
Pearl turned back to the man, "Typically I have been using her for training purposes...but I thought she might also function as an addition to my act. She can fight just as well as I can...and I can create more of her as well."
no subject
Though Childermass doesn't need to ask any further since Pearl moves on to a demonstration without prompting. It does get a start out of the magician, however, when the copy of her appears so suddenly like that. He takes a step back, eyes widening a hint, but only for a second or two. He gives the construct a quick look over, then lets out a low, impressed whistle. Well then...
"I can see why Baker thought you were real danger," he admits. Speaking of which, Baker's already whirling around to give a bark at the construct, but that's cut short by Childermass holding a hand up. "Baker, stay." And that's that. The Growlithe won't charge, though he will sit there and glower. That done, he glances back over towards Pearl.
"She looks real enough. How solid is she?"
no subject
"Yes, just a little misunderstanding. Back home I would use these for training purposes...but I thought they could work just as well in a performance capacity." She walked around the hologram as she explained. At his next question though she paused, "Oh--I suppose that varies. She's made of light--so objects can pass through her...but she is also solid enough have an impact herself. It more or less depends on what I create her to do might be the easiest way to explain it." She waved a hand through the hologram and is warped, like a television on the fritz, before bursting apart and disappearing once again. In some ways the holograms substance was similar to how Pearl constructed her own body around her gem--but she felt like that might be an explanation for another time. She did appreciate someone who was curious and wanted to know more though, Steven often got so distracted when she was trying to teach him things like this.
