⇨ EPILOGUE

Who: Anyone who's ever been in the game before!
When: Day 143 and for the rest of time.
Where: The Ringmaster's Realm.
What: It's a time of reunions and also a time for goodbyes - for now, but probably not forever. This is the final official log for Lost Carnival, and it's potentially open to anybody who's played in the game. Thanks for everything!
Warnings: Is it safe? It's probably safe.

THE EVER AFTER

It's done. The Huntsman is gone and the Winter Queen has been cured of her self-inflicted condition. It will take time, but if things proceed well, it seems like they could end up with a sympathetic party in the Winter Throne. At the very least, guilt is a hell of a drug when it comes to getting someone's ear on important matters.

The damage that has been done is not something that can easily be fixed. Lives have been ruined or lost completely, and emotional wounds can last a lifetime. Yet, for the first time in eons there is a bold hope for the future - a hope for change in ways the Courts never knew they could.

There is so much to do in the aftermath that it will be years before any of it has been truly seen through. In the immediate hours and days following, however, the Ringmaster will be focused on seeing to the needs of her carnival. Or, at least, what was her carnival. She isn't sure what it is now. She'll probably always think of them as her family, even if they don't return the sentiment. Things are different now, are they not? They are no longer her followers, but the friends and peers she had always wished for in her previous life.

After they have finished their business in the Winter Court, she will bring them all back to the remains of her realm. They need time to rest, and time to think. As she begins the reconstruction of her world, she has a few announcements to make.

Firstly - all lingering contracts for those present are now considered paid. She will fulfill their wishes to the best of her ability regardless of how many days would have been left. Of course, it will take her a bit of time since they are all happening at once, but she'll be going down the list! All other contracts will be fulfilled or cancelled depending on individual situations, and whether or a person's connection to the carnival was still active. Otherwise they've probably been reset and their contract cancelled anyway.

Secondarily - she is unsure of the future of the carnival itself. With how much there is to do, she doesn't feel that she can simply run away again, no matter how easy that would be in comparison. Being one of the Miracles puts her in a unique position of power, and this time, she wants to do right by it. Her and Ignatius have some ideas, but it will probably be a while before they come to fruition. However, she will rebuilding her realm in a new shape, and everyone is welcome to stay there as long as they want. Alternatively, she will help them travel to wherever in the multiverse they'd like to go instead, and they will retain easy passage back to her realm whenever they wish to travel there. In the future they can probably even learn to world travel on their own!

Thirdly - she is going to be inviting back people who still had open contracts so that everyone can catch up and make decisions about going home. Not all of them will show up in this time, but she wanted to give them the opportunity. So, if friends or family went home but haven't been reset, they may possibly be arriving at the new Ringmaster realm to catch up. Otherwise, their contracts will be considered paid and they can stay at home. This mean, previously dropped characters can reappear in the realm to visit and get some closure.

As a final helpful gift, those who became Miracles will be able to edit the reality of the realm to their liking while she works on it. So, if you want to hang out and build some things, you are free to design and magically construct your own spaces like high-res Minecraft.

And that's only the beginning.

Yuya watches for a moment before he starts to follow along the path to Lambert.

"Hey," he starts, to get Lambert's attention and not startle him. He's at least trying to not throw off what he's doing. "Practicing?"

When Yuya speaks up, Lambert pauses and glances over, arms still half-raised like a conductor caught mid-motion before he laughs and lowers them to his sides. The sense of magical potential buzzing in the air fades slightly with the gesture, though it remains ar

"Sort of," he shrugs. "The Ringmaster said this was basically our chance to do what we want with the place."

"Because of the power from the Miracles, right? You could make a home out here, too."

He looks out at the distance. "It's going to be pretty different now, after all."

Not just the carnival itself, but everything about their place with the Fae and, for some of them, their own worlds.

"It's something to look forward to."

“Oh, I’m planning on it,” Lambert agrees, his smirk growing wide and wicked. “Since it looks like Childermass is taking up being Autumn Regent, I figured the least his place could do is look the part. Like making him a big castle — I bet he’ll hate that.”

He sounds all too cheerful about the prospect of intensely annoying the love of his life, but well, that’s Lambert for you. After a moment or two of contemplation of their surroundings, probably daydreaming about the magician’s annoyed face and inevitable feather puffing, he looks to Yuya.

“When are you heading back?”

"A castle, huh..." It's a worthy building for the regent, it's true, but also Childermass has ever seemed such an overt person. "I'm sure he'll be good at it with the Ringmaster and Ignatius. And you need someplace to stay with him while he's here, right?"

Live your castle dreams, Lambert. "We're going to leave in a few days, Gongenzaka and Reira and I. Not forever, of course, but once we have everything sorted out..."

Well, Yuya can't hold back the longing in his voice and he doesn't try. He misses his home, his parents, Yuzu, all of that. He's long overdue to seem them all again without any danger.

Luckily(?) for Childermass, Lambert is more than happy to be overt enough for both of them.

"Reira's coming with you?" Gongenzaka's no surprise, in Lambert's mind, but the kid's a different story. "Last I heard from her, it sounded like she was thinking about sticking around."

"Of course she's coming. She's seven, that's way too young to be running off to live with the fae. Besides, her brother's back home."

Which is the most convincing reason for her, while Yuya's more concerned about the fact that she's a small child and he doesn't trust anybody left behind with raising her.

He doesn't trust her mom either, but at least in Maiami he and Reiji can interfere.

"But it's supposed to be really easy for us to come back to visit, right? So this won't really be goodbye."

“Sounds like it,” Lambert nods. “Though I don’t know how much time we’ll be spending here to start with. Childermass probably wants to sort things in England out.”

Which includes, among other things, resettling a certain magician back with his wife. It’s easier to feel less anger and more pity now that they aren’t in the thick of things, but perhaps some of Lambert’s uncertainty about how things are going to be moving forward is reflected in his expression.

Which he averts, quickly enough, by glancing back at his barely-begun project, linking his hands tougher and stretching them out in front of him. A smooth wall of stone grinds out of the earth — Lambert doesn’t doubt be could just make it appear if he wanted to, it’s just that his mind is still mortal enough he needs to think of things in a way that makes sense to natural laws even if it’s helen together by magic, not physics. A gesture raises up another slab of stone besides the first, pale and lightly veined.

“What do you think? Granite or marble?”

"Uh..." Is Lambert asking him for advice on decorating? Yuya has awful taste. Between the two options in front of him, they feel practically the same.

"Marble? If I have to visit you in England I can do that too, right?"

Strange talked about Yuya visiting, but now going for his sake is... uncomfortable. Even if he thought Arabella was nice. He thinks he wouldn't mind going to visit Lambert and Childermass, though.
whattaprick: (are you fucking kidding?)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2019-04-03 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
And thus Yuya is singlehandedly responsible for how the entryway to Lambert and Childermass’s home resembles a temple more than anything else...

“If you can get here, probably shouldn’t be hard,” the witcher says, still pinching and pulling at reality like someone trying to make a pastry look a bit less lopsided. There are walls — now buttresses — now columns spiraling skyward, their peaks unfurling and stretching out to join each other in fine arches before Lambert makes a face, and the arch flattens out into a beam instead. Less organic, less Summer Court.

“Takes a lot of work to get between worlds all the time, so might be easier to just put up a door to England we can open and close whenever we want. Though we’d have to think about where to hide it.” No stumbling into fairy circles, thanks.

Yuya whistles as Lambert starts raising pillars and pillars. It's impressive. He'll have to talk to Gongenzaka about being able to play architect like this (and bring all of Yuya's awful taste to reality).

He nods at the notion of a door, not unlike the carnival's gateway from before. "Maybe somewhere in your house? Or your backyard?" People don't just wander into backyards that aren't theirs, right?
