Summer Birthday for a Sunshine Child

[An Open Message]

[Sometime early on Day 147, Sora will put out a message over the radio;]

So, um. I've been here a while. I don't really know how long, but um...

I think I might be sixteen, now. So, if you wanna come hang out, that would be cool.

[And that's all he'll say.]

[Sweet Sixteen]

Where has Sora been for the past week? He's been... around. He hasn't holed himself up in his room or anything, been out and doing his job and exploring the area. To a casual passerby, he seems completely normal.

But anyone who knows him, will know that he's been unusually quiet. He's not been as... everywhere, as he usually is. He's not avoiding anything, but he's not running towards it either. It's entirely likely that the radio message he put out will be the first most people have heard from him all week, and that's only slightly troubling.

He's currently sitting in one of the more secluded gardens of the Summerlands, set up almost like a tea garden. Sparky the Shinx is purring on his lap. But aside from Sora himself, there's... nothing. The garden is empty, no balloons or cake, or anything to indicate that there's a birthday happening today. 

He's been doing a lot of thinking, lately, and it seems that's what he's doing today. In fact, he won't even look up from petting Sparky until you approach him.

"Hey," he smiles thinly. "What's up?"

[Sora chuckles a bit over the radio, but doesn't say anything else.

With the way Lambert was complaining, Sora's almost surprised that he found him at all. But he still greets him with a smile, and a gesture towards an open chair.]

You found it.

[destiny_key]

I... guess that's true. I've had parties in weirder places, I guess.

[destiny_key]

"Well, um, I dunno, really," Sora answers slowly, petting Riori as she tries to take over his lap from Sparky, who does not appreciate the shift in attention and tries to push her off.

"Just, like, I'm not really sure... how long I've been here. But I was pretty close to being sixteen back home, so like... I think I've had my birthday? But I dunno."

That's a pretty vague explanation, but Sora can't think of a better way of explaining it. He just sort of shrugs and turns his attention back to the pokemon trying to vie for being pet first.

[flashover]

[oh my god Sora, how can you be dumber than Rin? HOW.

At least, in this situation]

Well, I mean... what other kinds of things do you like to eat? Any fruit you like...?

"Yeah, there are a good few places around here." The awkwardness is starting to make Joker twitchy. It shouldn't be like this for multiple reasons and, finally, he flutters down from his tree perch.

"I've been here before, I can show ya around, if ya like." If nothing else, it'll give them something to do.

Sora hesitates. But he doesn't want this to be awkward either. He wants to be able to bounce back from whatever happened in Portland, and be able to talk again.

"Okay," he nods finally. "I'd like that."

[The only fruit that comes to his mind is Paopu fruit, but that's not really much of a flavor for things. Why does Rin keep asking these questions?]

Um? I dunno. I like most things, I guess. I'm not really picky.

[wild_magic]

Yeah! So you can definitely have a party. It would be lots of fun!

[destiny_key]

Mmm... Maybe. Maybe later.

I guess I'll have to think about it.

Ignoring his Pokemon's lap hogging, Tamaki considers this explanation. Thinking of it like that, he himself probably turned eighteen awhile back; even though he can't possible know when April 1st was, it wasn't going to be too long after the night he came to the Carnival. Though, celebrating his birthday without his friends sounds like a sad idea, so he decides to ignore his own birthday instead; he can always turn eighteen back home. Sora, though, clearly wants something, or he wouldn't have mentioned it.

"Then, that sounds like a good enough reason."

Everyone could use some cheering up after Portland, after all. Tamaki watches Riori shake her pom-poms at Sora while trying to sneakily push away Sparky with her foot, and he can't help but chuckle before looking back at Sora.

"Back home, when it was someone's birthday, we called it Strengthening Month." He flexes an arm, though it has nothing to do with physical strength. "So everyone had to be suuuuper nice to whoever's birthday it was, and do something that they wanted for the month! Like, clean your room, or watch anime." Which were mostly the things Tamaki was told to do, but that aside.

"So if you want, this can be SOR Strengthening Month." He puts his hands on his hips, smiling like he just said something really awesome. "So, what do you want me to do?"

Did you think I couldn't?

[ As far as gardens in the Summerlands go, this is a pretty ... boring one, actually. Nothing special catches Lambert's eye as he looks around, but he'll take the seat he's offered anyway, sprawling lazily into it. He digs into a pouch tied onto his belt, producing something wrapped in soft canvas and twine that he waggles it at Sora. ]

Here, catch.

[ He tosses it towards Sora lazily. ]

Well, okay. You don't have to, it just seems like fun. Maybe I'll do it for my birthday.

[pipers_son]

"Alright then, come along." Coming over, he holds his hand out to Feathers so that the Dartix can hop up along it and to his shoulder. "Food, and nice places- the Summerlands have a lotta things. Just gotta settle on what it is ya like."

[destiny_key]

"Yeah," Sora responds, gathering Sparky up in his arms. He stands and moves over to where Joker is waiting. "Probably more than most places. It seems like a pretty busy place."

[destiny_key]

Well, you sounded pretty lost on the radio.

[Sora grins just a little, but fumbles a bit as Lambert tosses him the package. He holds it up and examines it.]

What's this?

[destiny_key]

That'd be neat. How old'll you be, on your birthday?

[wild_magic]

Um... [Just give him a sec, his birthday and age aren't super relevant most of the time so he has to think about it.]

Thirteen!

[whattaprick]

Not my fault your directions are crap.

[ Lambert answers, without any rancor. ]

Open it and find out.

Sora blinks blankly up at Tamaki as he says this, not really sure how to respond. He's never heard of anything like that before; but then, different worlds have their own traditions, he supposed.

Still, it looks like Tamaki is trying to cheer him up, and he can't help but feel thankful for that.

"Oh, um..." Sora starts slowly, smiling awkwardly. "I... I don't really want you to do anything. I just... kinda wanted someone to hang out with, I guess. I haven't really seen anyone since... you know."

Maybe that was a little rude, turning down Tamaki's offer like that, but... he's tired. He can't think of anything for Tamaki to do, anyway.

Um, okay?

[Sora stares for just a second, before looking down and pulling the twine to open it up.]

Oh, so you're not that much younger than me.

[flashover]

Dude, you are not helping. Like, at all. Fine, I'll play it by ear!

[ Inside the cloth are three glass vials, filled with a bright red fluid (thankfully, it doesn't appear to be blood) and sealed with wax. ]

It's made out of red phoenix fruit. [ Is what Lambert offers, helpfully, though that explanation probably won't do much for Sora if he doesn't know what phoenix fruit even is. ]

You ever need energy in a pinch, drink one of those.

[Sora examines the little vials for a moment while Lambert explains them, before his eyes light up in understanding.]

Oh! They're like potions. Thank you!

[Hey, you can never have enough potions.]
