LET'S TRY SOMETHING NEW

Who: The Wardrobe Crew, And YOU (Specifically Carly, Nui, and Julien)
When: S2: D2-D5
Where: The Wardrobe Tent
What: It's time to play with the Wardrobe's new tools...and for people to get Fittings done.

[OPEN PROMPT: Ask for Carly, Nui, or Julien!]

It isn't long into the first official day 'back to work', that a relatively loud public announcement comes out on the radios. And for those who aren't listening on the radios, Carly has sent her trusty pokemon, Nuna to go and deliver small flyers to any employee she runs into. People who refuse may find themselves heckled by a ghostly fire-whielding lizard.

Regardless-the announcement goes as follows.

"Everyone! Now that we're back to work, there's a lot of things to get back on track with! First, I know a lot of us have had some new changes...and a lot of us are new too! So hello, new people! Regardless, I need everyone-and I mean EVERYONE, even if you haven't had any changes recently-to drop by the Wardrobe tent at some point this week.

"This is because we have a new tool for fittings now~ It's a shapeshifting mannequin, which will make getting everyone their clothes a lot faster! But it needs to actually be exposed to the person it's matching size with, so think of it as one last check-in before you grow wings or something like that alright? If you don't come in, you're not going to find anything fitting you, so make sure you come in..!!" This isn't entirely true, in the case of people she's already fitted, but...hey. Don't leave her hanging.

The Wardrobe Tent isn't hard to find-around the back end of the Big Top, it's where any performer has to pass through before actually performing after all. Decked out with streams and bolts of fabric of all sorts, and definintely something of a controlled chaotic mess, there is a particularly large space cleared up for people entering this time around. The Mannequin, faceless and default, stands ready.

As does at least one member of the Wardrobe Team who actually bother with cloth. If it's Carly, expect a warm, and somewhat excitable welcome, as well as a wave. Nui? An even more excitable welcome. Maybe even too excited, she's just so...Happy? (And yet somehow, Carly probably seems more giddy about it...)

Julien-presumably the human one at least-is far more contained then both, suffice to say, but either way their greeting all boils down to one thing.

Are you here for your fitting, then? Well let's get Started.

[CLOSED | WARDROBE DEPARTMENT (Makeup Included)]

There is one new addition to the Wardrobe Tent in particular that those under Carly's employ will notice-a very, VERY large ...Thing. "Okay!" Carly explains to everyone, as many times as it takes, in as many different instances as there are. Not everyone is going to crowd around a machine like a pack of curious dogs after all-knowing her crew? It'll largely be in...Individual encounters. Regardless!

She's excited. "This is our new recycling machine~! ...Er. Sort of. This," she explains, holding up a set of transcribed instructions, "Is a '3D Printer'! It takes the materials we put inside, and makes the product as we desire. For things like costumes, this....isn't a good idea," Carly notes, coughing. "Nothing beats our own hands for that..! But when it comes to getting fabric sheets, or even decorations, it's perfect~ We can finally make use of our scrap bin, or even our old make up~! So what do you think we should try thowing in first?"

This is a good question and can't possibly end badly, nope.

[WILDCARD]

(Have a custom matter to be dealt with? Aside from doing necessary and simple touch-ups as requested, the Wardrobe Tent also does Extra things...provided of course, some compensation for the Carnival to replace the materials is given. Most of the time, Costumes and coming acts are the main focus for detailed work, but with things starting off again, a small project or two isn't out of the question-so come on in, and ask one of the tailors about what you need done!)

"A description of the magic won't help me," Strange explains, as he continues to stare at the mannequin. "In order to understand the magic used, I need to be familiar with the source or the caster. I could piece out Summer Court magic, for example, even if I didn't know the Summer Fae who used it."

Still, explanation of his magic aside, Strange can't help but raise an eyebrow as Julien mentions what the mannequin can do. Well obviously that's an invitation to test this thing's capabilities and play 'what sort of limbs can you grow!' Hell yeah let's put this thing through the motions! Strange grins as he takes a few steps backwards, placing his hands behind his back as he overlooks the mannequin.

"Mannequin!" Hopefully it knows that's it's name. "Grow a lizard's tail for me." A pause, before, "If you don't mind."

"Huh. Well, that's cool." Magic talk is a little beyond him. "Would you be able to tell if someone else was from my world or had my deal going?"

One way or another, the mannequin knows when it's being addressed.

"Gladly, my dear!" The magic in it builds and surges. Out loud there is a faint, continuing sound of wood sliding and clicking against wood, and after a few seconds the tip of a segmented tail is visible from the front. It grows longer and longer - if Strange moves to look at the mannequin's backside he'll see the tail centered in a knothole pattern in the wood that wasn't really there before, and wider and wider segments emerging from that - until it's about three feet long, curled so it doesn't touch the floor. That magic settles. "Is this right?"

Holy shit, this is amaziiiiing. Strange can't help but grin widely as the mannequin starts shifting. He does indeed move around, trying to watch the tail forms. And yes, that's definitely a lizard's tail. How would the mannequin know that? Oh sure, the carnival had a lizard, but she was a bit shorter than the mannequin, wasn't she? "It's perfect," Strange responds, grinning still. "Thank you, mannequin."

And oh, right, Julien asked a question. Strange turns back to look at the man. "Perhaps?" he simply answers. "The problem with your world is that you're the only person here. There's certain aspects of your magic that might either symbolize your world or you individually—the blueness, for example."

Strange saw part of Julien's magic as blue. This is apparently a thing. "But if someone else showed up from your world and I saw some of their magic in action, then sooner or later I should be able to piece out the specifics."

"Oh, my pleasure!" the mannequin chirps, dormant and waiting for input again.

"Huh. Well, we don't call it or think of it as magic, but all the people from my world have this connection going on, even if we're not aware of it. I'm just someone who was made aware of it, and one thing led to another, and now I'm a bird." It's all more complicated than that. Julien's not at all sure if there's a hivemind entity on every world, how would anyone know if it didn't do anything, or that's unique to his.

"Say, am I doing magic now?" He hadn't known until Heartstone Manor that if his bodies were cut off from each other this one would go inert. This brain has got to be processing on its own, he can multitask pretty well now, but there's still some kind of connection.
kingsroads: (totally got this situation down pat)

Sorry Julien, Strange simply shrugs. His third eye combined with slight canon magical sensitivity means that this is just a lot of bullshit and a lot fo Strange realizing oh, he can do this now or oh, this can be viewed this way.

"Perhaps? Honestly, it's easier to tell active magic than passive magic. Take that mannequin for an example," said as he gestures towards the mannequin. "I wasn't able to tell it from all the other mannequins until it started talking and shifting and moving around. And then, of course, the carnival is simply swarming in passive magic which makes the whole thing harder than expected."

It's a lot of talking to get to one answer: Strange doesn't really know if Julien's doing magic right now. He at least looks properly apologetic at the complete non-answer he's giving Julien.

"Huh," Julien says again, and shrugs. "Cool. Is it easier to see, uh, passive things out on stops, if the places aren't magic?"

He pauses a moment, considers the handful of places he's seen on tour here. Portland, which feels like it should encompass several worlds itself, the Summerlands, Greysol, Heartstone Manor, the Carnival's own Moon. Three of those were the domains of High Fae. The world he's just referring to as Portland, uh, that was a whole thing. The least magical was definitely Greysol, and even then, there were witches and the embodiments of souls wandering around everywhere. Julien realizes he has very little idea of what a 'normal' stop on this tour is. They're supposed to be no more than two weeks and not significantly less. Wild.

He shakes his head, smiles. "Do we ever actually hit up any places that aren't magic?"
kingsroads: (what a creepyass house)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-01-14 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't know but perhaps," Strange simply answers. "That's for both questions, by the way. I used to be slightly magically sensitive, but it's only gotten stronger after Portland. We visited a few worlds that weren't as magic as others before that place, but I've no way of knowing if they didn't have any magic to begin with."

Strange doesn't need to fill in with the rest: and every world since Portland has at least been slightly magical. But beforehand, Alola didn't seem to be magic. And neither were the digital worlds that they went to, both the Matrix and the Mainframe. But again, he really had no way of telling if they didn't have any magic at all or the magic they had was only a slight amount. Strange likes to think it's the latter, though.

"Considering the Ringmaster, I don't see why we would stop at a place entirely devoid of magic. A world without magic would be just so...well, it would be so dull!" Not that strange is biased, or anything (he is totally biased).

"Huh, you got a leftover from there? Hm, man, I can pick a better word than that. A palimpsest?" Julien shrugs. "Haha, I love that word but I can't see it catching on."

"Maybe it'd have something else to recommend it. Like, everyone's talking deer! Or it'd be magic, it just wouldn't look like it. There's this author who said sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic, it'd be cool to see some of that." He grins again. "I've been to few enough of these places I'm not all jaded by it yet, I think I'd enjoy even a duller one."
kingsroads: (dude are you sure?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-01-16 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think I prefer 'present,'" Strange responds, with a wry little grin. Others might not think so, but Strange views what he got from Portland as a gift. It's something he desperately loves and wants to show off as much as possible.

Though, Strange can't help but frown a little at Julien's statement. Advanced technology that couldn't be distinguished from magic... "If I may be blunt, that's a bit of a ridiculous statement. Of course you can tell technology apart from magic, anyone with even the slightest magical sensitivity could do so."

"Heh. Hey, if it works for you! I'm pretty happy with the eyes thing I kept off it, even if it wigs people out sometimes." It feels completely natural. Well, of course it does, he did it constantly as an angel.

He shrugs. "The point of the saying is, like, it gets complicated. Maybe it's got a whole bunch of properties that make perfect sense as science and it reads as magic? Or tech with a magic component? I don't magic, dude."
kingsroads: (probably thinking bout faeries)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-01-18 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Julien doesn't magic and Strange doesn't technology. But this point is interesting enough that Strange is just going to keep pressing it and keep criticizing it, despite Julien's protestations and the fact that he'd probably want the conversation to focus on something else.

"But you could still tell. It would be like if you got something resembling a force of nature and tried to pass it off as nature itself. Like turning a fan on someone and claiming it's the wind."

It's very obvious that it would be best if Julien changed the subject, otherwise Strange is just going to continue railing on Arthur C. Clark from across the multiverse.
