⇨ POLARIS 3.0

Who: Everyone!
When: Day 115
Where: Polaris
What: On the morning of day 115, a couple hours before the technicians would come to pick up the test subjects, the escape plan will officially come into effect. If your character has been left out of the loop up till this point, feel free that someone hastily explains the plan during the initial phase! The meat of everything else will be played out via megathreads and any private toplevels people want to make.
Warnings: Probably violence.

PEER REVIEW

The plan starts with getting everyone out of their cells. Childermass is going to be using his Gilded Mark to enhance his shadow movement abilities, unabling him to teleport himself and other people out of containment. If your character has other ways of escaping they are free to pursue that, but on a base level, it can be assumed that everyone gets out thanks to Childermass. (Thanks Childermass!) Once everyone has been removed from their cells by some means or another, they will be forced to split into teams as swiftly as possible, as the moment people start breaking out, negative attention from the staff will start building. The area is poorly guarded at first, but as people become aware of the breakout, more will arrive.

Gild, speaking on behalf of her inside plant, will say that those that 1) want to get their stuff back, 2) want to find Ignatius, should get the assistance of their allied Deltas to access sector A5. From there, they will have to access Polaris's storage in A3, a neighbouring sector, and find access to C2, the station where Ignatius is being held. They should expect to be met with armed resistance, but with any luck allies will be there to assist them.

In general, characters will be most effective if they back one of these major objectives:

► TEAM LOOT: This team is trying to get back the items and pets that were confiscated when the group was brought into Polaris. Their objective, according to their allies on the inside, is to get to A5, and then make their way to A3. The important thing is being able to locate their stuff among a sea of other items, and to make it through security in order to reclaim it. Gild's plant has said that they will assist with this. After getting these items, Team Loot may wish to merge with Team Rescue.

► TEAM RESCUE: This team's primary focus is to get to A5 and then make their way to C2. If desired, they may wait for or join with Team Loot, or they may strike out ahead in order to take advantage of the element of surprise. The key factors are obtaining a way to access C2, as well as being prepared for armed conflict with the technicians guarding it, as well as possibly the Mother of Invention herself. Though, the ideal is that Gild will be distracting here at that time.

► TEAM DISTRACTION: This team can do their thing wherever they please, as their main intent is to sew general discord and distract the staff from the teams doing more important things. They should be prepared for armed resistance, but what tactics they pursue beyond that point are highly variable.

► TEAM FORTRESS: This team is attempting to set up a protective base of operations in the original sector in order to survive the conflict and protect their noncombatant comrades. How they accomplish this is also highly variable.

Other objectives may exist, of course, and can be made with their own separate top levels. Chunks of these megathreads will have to be played out in summary form, so when characters are simply trying to get from place to place and specifics aren't necessary, feel free to stick to that format. Assume that everyone is already out of their cells for the purpose of the megathreads.

Here is a shitty map of how the sectors connect, from a side view of the central Polaris hub.

“You don’t remember anything before Ignatius got the Mother of Invention out of you?” Lambert looks her over thoughtfully.

“He wasn’t sure himself, but she was shouting about how he should impressedwith what she’d done. And he said if you were really his faeblood now, he should be able to have more control over you than the Mother did. You know how that turned out.”

Some of the color drains from Rita's face, and she opts to sit down at the table, setting the armor on a seat beside her.

"...I'd considered the possibility," she says, staring down at the table's surface. "So it's really true." The connection between them, the way Gild reacted when she saw her... it makes sense.

"...Still can't believe he took the bait," she adds, still looking distracted.

“I did try to get him to come with me and Childermass,” Lambert admits. “But I guess he took it differently.”

Though in the end, it didn’t exactly turn out badly, he supposes. It would have been a pain to deal with a possessed Rita on top of everything else in that fight.

“Guess you really do mean something to him.” His smirk as he says that suggests he has an idea exactly how she’ll take that.

"D... don't be stupid!" Rita blurts out at that, practically out of reflex.

But she knows he's not wrong. Rita doesn't understand exactly when or how it happened, but it's clear that their relationship has done a complete 180. Ignatius put himself at risk to save her, even though there was nothing in it for him. People only do that sort of thing when they care, don't they?

She scoffs, seemingly trying to discourage any argument on that front (because she knows she'll lose), and voices a different concern. "Ugh... In the end, I don't really know what it means to be faeblooded. If it means I'll be able to live with this heart without it suddenly giving out on me, I'll take it, but..." It definitely seems like there's a lot to it, and Rita's starting to seriously regret not doing any in-depth research into the subject sooner.

“I don’t know either,” Lambert admits. What little he knows about being a faeblood comes from Childermass, which largely seems to be all of the shit and none of the perks.

“There’s something between a fae and their faeblood called a bloodbond. At least that’s what the Rose Queen called it. She tried to make the Count use it to give her Childermass.”

Rita listens, raising her gaze to look a little more attentive.

“And I suppose that’s what Ignatius used to pull me back...” she muses, adding with a hint of bitterness, “Another way for the fae to exert ownership over their changelings.”

Evidently, she has some mixed feelings about it.

"Fae think they're born owning the world ," Lambert answers, with a shrug. It just seems to be the way it is. Although for all Rita's bit of bitterness, he'll take the time to remind her of a rather pertinent fact all the same.

"Could be worse. He's no Rose Queen or Count of Crows. Though as far as becoming a faeblood goes, I think getting your heart taken out is worse than having reality bent around you, so maybe it evens out in the end." In other words, his sympathy for Rita's lot extends mostly to the unhappy circumstance of being experiment fodder, but on the whole he'd consider she got away with a much better lot than Steven and Childermass.

"Has it changed your magic any?"
anti_nonsense: (Here's the deal.)

Rita's lips press into a line. It's hard to make out, but her mouth curves slightly into a faint, wry smile. Her memories of that experiment are harrowing, but at the same time, they're almost too horrible to even feel real. She's relieved, mostly, that the worst of it's behind her. And now, with Polaris done for, she won't have to watch similar experiments being performed on others anymore.

At his question, she nods and holds out a hand over the table, her palm facing up. Over it, she conjures a small flame, its color pale, less like natural fire and more like Ignatius's white flames. Lambert probably saw it during the fight before, but there wasn't much time to examine the phenomenon until now.

"My fire looks different, though it doesn't feel all that weird. I'll have to experiment if I want to figure out any specifics." With her free hand, she cups her chin as she gazes into the flame. "...I'd better test my ice magic too, while I'm at it."
whattaprick: (back the fuck up)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2018-11-30 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
That's just like Rita, to skip ahead to the next thing she'd like to test. Lambert envies her that, in a way -- he has fewer things except dealing directly with other problems to keep himself occupied -- but he doesn't begrudge her that, either.

"Ice magic?" He parrots, knowing he's inviting what's likely going to be a near-incomprehensible stream of prattle about magic he can only vaguely follow, even as his own gaze trackes the flame.
anti_nonsense: (read a motherfuckin' book)

[personal profile] anti_nonsense 2018-11-30 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
Fortunately for Lambert, Rita keeps it fairly simple, explaining as the small flame remains burning in the air above her hand.

"When Ignatius changed, his domain became some sort of fusion of fire and ice magic. If my fire's been affected, there could be something different about my ice magic, too." She gives a slight shrug. "It seems worth looking into, anyway."
whattaprick: (you're all a bunch of amateurs)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2018-12-06 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Can't pass up any advantages we might have now. Never know when it'll come in handy." Since Rita's a magic user, of course she'd say that. It's probably best not to dwell on the topic of magic, though, so Lambert's going to move onto something much more personally interesting to him.

"What do you think of her? The Gilded Mark?"
anti_nonsense: (I may have cat ears but YOU look stupid.)

[personal profile] anti_nonsense 2018-12-06 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Rita closes her hand, the fire disappearing in puff of smoke.

"She seems... normal, I guess. For a fae." Though the fire's gone, she seems to be concentrating on the smoke... or perhaps concentrating on the question while her gaze happens to be pointed at the smoke. "Like a person I could actually have a normal conversation with. Makes me wonder if there are more fae like her out there, or if she's the weirdo, from her people's perspective."
whattaprick: (so ... dinner?)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2018-12-07 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
"I was wondering the same," Lambert admits, shrugging. "Maybe that's what happens when you're away from the Courts ... then again, the fae in the Summerlands weren't much better. Maybe less ready to kill us, but not like..."

He frowns, trying to find the right words to put around it, before he settles on borrowing Rita's since they capture the spirit well enough.

"Like they're people. Like you said. It's like they aren't real."
