PORTLAND BY NIGHT↴![]() Memory regains will come into effect at the beginning of October, to whatever degree you've decided upon, and may be regained at whatever pace you desire from then on. For those with their full carnival memories, it will be like waking up in the body of someone else - for those with half and half, it will be like rapidly recalling sets of memories from a totally different life. Those with full amnesia will simply feel as if this is how it's always been. Unfortunately for you, memories aren't the only thing you have to deal with. The supernatural community of Portland is bustling all of a sudden - could your presence and these events somehow be related? ► THE OUTER CIRCLE: As of the start of the month, the Portland Circle of Enlightenment will find itself starting to get swarmed with members from other chapters. Most notably, it would seem that a small cabal of top mages from the North American Enlightenment Council will be making their home in Portland's HQ. For anyone but the highest of ranks, the purpose behind their visit will be unclear, but it seems like something is definitely up on a metaphysical level. The Circle will be buzzing with rumours of unique planar activity and threatening omens. It seems that it all started with an unusual flare of activity in the planetary ley-lines, starting approximately a week ago. However, even if you would usually be the type to keep tabs on such things, you will find that you oddly have no memory of observing this phenomenon yourself. ► THE ANIMAL FAIR: Good news, the fair is in town! Or, at least, it would be good news... if this was a regular fair. Instead, what's being observed is a bunch of nearly identical flyers, spread all around Portland - each of which bears only the words "THE ANIMAL FAIR", a seemingly bloody paw-print of unknown origin, and the directions to a vague forested location outside of the city. It's dated for October 7th, and all instances of its posting having been discovered with a scattering of rose petals, crow feathers, and pre-burnt matches laying on the ground around them. Most are taking this to be some kind of bizarre viral marketing campaign, but others may know better. ► THE EARTH SPIRIT: If you have connections to The Pack or any of its many variations, you'll probably hear whispers of something very odd that occurred last week - according to the elders, it sounds as if the Earth Spirit, the magical and spiritual center of the planet, has suddenly taken a wound. It's not clear why or how, but there is a fair bit of concern among spiritual types, as it is werebeast belief and nebulous magical fact that the magical forces within the earth are the source of all magic here, as well as the source of life. While many werebeasts claim to have felt the Spirit succumb, you strangely have no memory of such an event occurring. Though things do feel strange, if you know how to tap into the Spirit yourself. ► THE WAR CRY: Though Anath's rain of terror across North America lasted for the first fifteen years or so of the Severing, most independent demons have had enough time to start taking the arch-demon's relative inactivity for granted. For that first while, the warrior queen had seemed determine to rebuild an army on earth by forcing her scattered brethren into service - only for her to gradually settle down in a fortress somewhere in Texas and dig in her heels. Of course, this was too good to last - it sounds as if she and her demonic legion have begun tearing their way up the west coast, their goals remaining a mystery. Their destination, however, is almost certainly Portland. |

Rita doesn't know who this girl is, or what (A were-bird? No... with that glowing, could she be an angel?), but it looks like they're on the same side. Rita dashes over to the stranger, then uses a quick series of gestures to conjure magic flames to burn at the vines on one side of them. That sword can only chop so many at once, but maybe if Rita holds them off and lets her focus on a few at a time, they can make some progress in fighting back.
"Not sure. They just came into the library from outside. Maybe they're growing out of the dirt somewhe-- GAH!" Rita's cut off as several vines lash out at her at once. Some of them get caught in the flames, but one wraps around her ankle and pulls, throwing her off-balance and knocking her down.

If the plants were coming in from the outside than a way to barricade the windows would be most helpful in fighting them. But this building was huge, and they had nothing to barricade with. She huffs in frustration.
"Our only hope is too get everyone outside and hope there's a limit to how far these things can reach!"
Of course it's just as she says this that Rita is knocked to the ground, the vine that caused the fall still wrapped around her ankle. Marinette shouts, chopping that vine, but despite the advantage of having a bladed weapon, she's only one person!
"Isn't there another exit!"
no subject
If there was any question whether this other girl's an ally or not, it's been put to rest now. Rita doesn't offer any words of thanks, but instead focuses on their next action.
Another exit... Looking behind her, Rita can already see new vines creeping in under the door she just came through. "We'll have to break out!" She turns her head, facing pointedly at the windows. Some are already covered in vines, but a few still appear to be untouched. That could be their way out.

"Shining grace!" She shouts as they near the window, a surge of white light rushing forward and smashing through the glass just as they're about to fly through it.

Come to think of it, this girl's surprisingly strong. Not like Rita weighs a whole lot, but even so... maybe she really is an angel, or something like it. One who's lame enough to shout the names of her own attacks while she uses them. Perfect.
Despite her protests from moments earlier, by the time they're flying through the window, Rita's stopped squirming and instead holds on to the girl for dear life, bracing herself for flying glass and their coming landing.

It protects them from the shards of glass that are still flying through the air, but it means there's nothing stopping them from plummeting towards the earth. Marinette's stomach turns as gravity takes hold and they fall, inertia pushing them forward. It's only a split second later when her wings open again, but she feels sick from the sensation and dizzy from power loss. Quickly she moves to land, and soon they're both on the ground, a fair distance away from the vines and the havoc their wrecking on the sanctuary. Former sanctuary, she thinks sadly as she falls to her knees.
Her breathing is heavy with exertion, and the muscles in her arms ache from swinging her sword so violently over and over at the plants as they moved to overtake her. A flash of light surrounds her and in an instant her wings are gone. Any divine presence she'd had vanished as once more she was a normal, if not extremely bedraggled, dark haired girl.
"You okay?" she asks, looking tiredly over towards her companion.
no subject
"I'm fine," she answers curtly, brushing off her clothes. Her leg has a few cuts, but they're minor enough that the bleeding should stop on its own. Now that she's not in imminent danger, Rita takes a moment to look over to the Sanctuary they just escaped from, her brow furrowed. How did it get this bad, this fast? And how many others got out in time? After a pause, she gives the girl a questioning look. "Uh... so, who or what are you, anyway?"
no subject
"Marinette." she comments, forcing herself to stand as he breathing calms and her pulse begins to slow again. "I'm just a witch."
A witch with an angel patron, but she usually preferred not to get into all that if she can get away with it. She turns around, glancing to the sanctuary as well. This place had stood as a safehaven for others for such a long time, and now the feeling of safety it offered had been destroyed.
"I came to see if I could help out, but I guess I ended up needing help instead." She turns back to Rita, giving the changling a bashful look.
"Thank you."
no subject
Getting thanked out of the blue isn't really helping Rita stop feeling flustered. She turns her head away. "I was just saving myself." Okay, that came out a little harsh. "I mean... it was convenient that you were around, so it went easier." Is that a thank you? Sort of. Maybe.
While looking away, she finds herself gazing at the Sanctuary some more. The thick vines covering the stone walls, the blossoming flowers, the heaviness in the air... it's just like... Like what? Rita feels like she's seen something like this before, but that's impossible. It never happened. But somewhere in her mind, there's an image... like a castle? Or a city...
She holds a hand up against her head, looking oddly dazed.
no subject
"Hey, you sure you're okay?" She does know a little healing magic, though it didn't really help with non-physical injuries.
"Do you need to use a phone or something?"
no subject
"I probably just had too much exposure to those flowers. I'll be fine with some fresh air." She brings her hand back down and faces Marinette again. A phone... that's right, did Pearl answer her call for backup!? She looks around the perimeter, but at the very least, it doesn't look like the gang's showed up. There's a bit of a sinking feeling... Is Pearl's loyalty to the Rose Queen more important than her fellow Renegades? It's probably too soon to jump to conclusions, though...
"I don't need to call anyone," she decides after some thought. Not right now.
no subject
"... Do you have anywhere to go?" She's more than happy to leave Rita alone if that's what the other girl wants, but considering most people who lived at the sanctuary didn't have anywhere else to go she was a bit worried for the girl's well being.

"Be careful, and stay safe." She pulls her hand back, glancing at Rita a moment longer before turning and running towards home. She's tired, but the sooner she gets home, the sooner she can go to sleep. Hopefully Rita would make it somewhere safe soon too.
