whattaprick: (back the fuck up)

let's get down to business

Who: Nightrunners and whoever wants to make use of the training yard for whatever reason.
When: S2 D1-D5
Where: The Training Yard
What: Training, or pointing and laughing at people training.
Warnings: Explosions and swearing, probably.

Though it's never really been off-limits, once they're down off the moon, Lambert wastes little time informing the nightrunners he officially expects them to get back to training and getting in shape. They can make ample use of the training yard facilities to learn how to work with each other after their extended vacation, or just get to know their newer coworkers in an environment closer to what their actual working conditions will actually be like.

The yard, as usual, isn't limited solely to nightrunners. Anyone who wants to work on their physical or magical skills are welcome, as well as anyone from the other departments who have anything they might want to test out that requires a combatant, for some reason.

Lambert's generally a constant presence at the fringes, sometimes participating in exercise or sparring himself, but mostly just watching and making sure no one's about to put someone's eye out or break the equipment, because that would be bad for obvious reasons.

[Lucky for Strange, Syrlya isn't enough of an asshole to start chucking rocks.

He holds the spell for longer this time out of anticipation as Strange stalls. What he does expect, however, is control of the spell to be ripped from him as its forcibly dissipated, leaving Syrlya gaping at the beam with his magic gone.]
kingsroads: (totally got this situation down pat)

[ Victory!

With a bark of laughter and a grin that's way too smug on his face, Strange makes his way through the balance beam...before wiping out as he jumps down to one of the platforms, slips slightly on the wet surface, and falls face first into the mud. Pride goeth before the fall, asshole.

The main thing wounded is his pride as Strange wipes away the mud from his eyes with the least dirty part of his sleeve as he makes his way to the window...where he's honestly just planning on cheating and reflection-teleporting around the thing unless Syrlya stops him.

[And thus, Strange was his own demise once again.

Syrlya doesn't interrupt Strange for the rest of his trek across the course, which is probably just fine when he's made enough of a mess of himself, and instead approaches the end and gestures animated to the balance beam.]

What did you do up there? [His tone is a little more urgent, although his expression is controlled and tight. Sure, spellbreaking is known in Tyria. But it takes expertise with the kind of magic you're breaking, and he certainly expected it to be the same with Strange's own ability.]
kingsroads: (dude are you sure?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-02-04 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Strange finishes the rest of the training course with ease. As he skids to a stop in front of Syrlya, he gives the other man a wide grin, a sort of 'take that' smile, despite the fact that he's covered in mud. He completed the obstacle course even with Syrlya fucking with him, isn't he amazing, Strange is counting that as a victory.

At Syrlya's question, Strange stares at him a moment before responding.

What, on the balance beam? I broke your spell. I thought it was obvious?

Yes, but how? [He gestures vaguely at Strange.] I am looking for more of an explanation than that!
kingsroads: (well drat now)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-02-05 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
[ And now we reach a new problem: Strange attempting to explain his magic. He frowns slightly, thinking as he tries to piece the words together. ]

Admittedly, I don't really know what spell I broke specifically. But I do know your magic. I can see and sense these things and, considering that we live together, I've had plenty of experience seeing your magic at work. It's like...if someone hands you a sweater. You don't have to know how it was knitted but tug on enough strings or snip the right thread and the thing unravels.

[ Does that make sense? Strange is frowning, a quizzical expression on his face like he's not entirely sure what to think of the whole explanation. ]

[Syrlya brings a hand to his chin, furrowing his brow.]

So it is... unguided destruction rather than a calculated reduction. [Maybe that's a harsh way of putting it. But it is less developed than he anticipated.] How long does it usually take? Have you attempted to use it against more complicated, less familiar enchantments?
kingsroads: (maybe staring makes it work)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-02-05 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Strange can't help but frown slightly because dude, unguided destruction? That's a bit harsh. But, then again, it's not like Strange is good at anything subtle to begin with. ]

If I can understand the magic, it rarely takes longer than a minute. As for your other question, this is a more refined version of the spell that Lambert and I used to break the Prince's curse on the bicorn during the Hunt.

[ more refined = less smooches. ]

Oh, yes, the kiss. [Because of course during the night of investigation, Syrlya asked got the details. Fae magic was different, however--something Strange was familiar with if not connected to.

Syrlya clearly underestimated how much of his own magic Strange has managed to identify.]

Do you remember what we discussed before, about learning to cast magic from each other's worlds?
kingsroads: (maybe we can talk about other things?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-02-07 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
[ Strange nods, as he looks over at Syrlya. ]

I still think it's a sound hypothesis. After all, people here have been able to pick up magic from Portland, Greysol, and the fae themselves. Especially if someone's magically inclined already, it should be easy to learn my English magic or your mesmer magic.
chronosynthesis: (❖ The Pledge)

[personal profile] chronosynthesis 2018-02-07 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
How interested are you in testing that theory? [Because Syrlya is. If Strange can sense chaos energy that strongly, what's stopping him from using it if it's present? Perhaps with the right training... hey could use not just a replicated spell, but the exact same magic that Syrlya does. Or vice versa.]
kingsroads: (YAY RASH DECISIONS!!!)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-02-07 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Strange's eyes literally sparkle with excitement at Syrlya's suggestion. He grins widely before launching himself straight into magical theory and hypothesizing. ]

I am extremely interested! Of course, I don't expect to learn this overnight. It isn't like the daemon spell where the Ringmaster taught it to people or some people's Portland magic, which was an extension of their magical selves. Learning an entirely new system of magic...I suspect it will take a while, especially since I know I won't be able to focus solely on that. But even just the possibility of improving my speed—

[ Just cut him off, it's obvious Strange is going to go into yet another magic ramble if given the opportunity. ]

[Syrlya holds up a hand to get Strange to calm the hell down.]

I am no teacher, and I do not know how accessible Tyria's magic really is where we are. [He could still use it just fine, but he can't say it's because it came with him. Given the similar state others are in, it may only be because they were already connected.]

But if you can already sense and decipher it, I would like to see how possible it really is. [A pause.] Lavellan expressed a similar interest, perhaps I should explain it at the same time...
kingsroads: (well why don't we do this?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-02-08 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
[ Strange's expression brightens up even more as Syrlya mentions Lavellan. He's got nothing but good feelings and high regards for the elf, as pretty much every one of their conversations has turned into the two being nerds at each other. ]

That would make it easier for you. And who knows, perhaps she might have an insight through her magic that I would overlook!
chronosynthesis: (❖ Continuum Split)

[personal profile] chronosynthesis 2018-02-08 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'll try to find time with both of you, then. [Because it would be easier to go over everything at once, perhaps a much more robust mutual exchange.]

Later. I think right now, cleaning up is more important. [He gives Strange and all his mud a once over.]
kingsroads: (dude are you sure?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-02-08 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm? [ And then Strange looks down at himself and realizes, almost for the first time, that he's muddy as hell. ]

Oh, you're right! [ whoops. ] Any more talk of magic shall be had after a shower. I'll try not to track any mud in the trailer, but I'm sure you'll understand if I accidentally do.

[ he is 100% going to track mud in their trailer. ]
