Who: Everybody!
When: Day 64
Where: The Camping Grounds
What: While the Ringmaster attempts to purge the carnival of magical tracing spells and deal with the angry fire fae in her belly, everyone else is getting sent on an emergency camping trip with some unusual local fauna.

CRYPTIC CAMPGROUNDS↴

You're given about three hours to prepare, after the Ringmaster tells you her plans for the coming week. There is a vast selection of camping equipment at your disposal, and the means to take along enough food for the length of the stay. The wilderness of the planet you're left on is nearly idyllic, but some people just don't like the great outdoors.

► CRYPTOZOOLOGY: As it turns out, the carnival won't be alone here. There is a varied ecosystem of cryptids to be found as well, living in relative peace and mostly reacting to the newcomers with curiousity. More details can be found on the plotting post. You are free to NPC the cryptids as much as you need to, as long as you stick to the behaviours described.

► DREAMSHARING: There is a player plot going on which will allow characters to share dreams! These are specifically more dreams than nightmares, and the mushi-adept characters will be here to help.

► CHILLAX: There isn't any plot twist for this setting, so this is mostly an opportunity to decompress from the last plot and get ready for the future. The Ringmaster will show up occasionally to help with needed medical treatments and check on things, but won't stick around for long.

It's objectively a problem, but not one Yuya's sure he's really looking for a solution to. They just mean that much to each other, and when the extent of it is put to the test Yuya's forced to face the reality of just how far they'll go. It's love, and it's also terrifying.

He never wants to actually have to face those words, but he's sure he won't get the choice. He purses his lips, then absently fishes for another marshmallow to impale onto his stick. Of course he wants to be strong. Stronger. Strong enough maybe he can protect himself and Gongenzaka. But the Fae are greater than he ever expected, and if he had to make the choice...

"Yeah," He finally says, after a long moment of silence staring at the fire, although it comes out weakly. "I will."

That reminds him, though, of the other thing he wanted to say, about the other person that means the world to him. "And... thanks for not letting Ignatius take Yuzu. Even if it hurt you."

Well this just makes Strange feel intensely guilty. Because had he known then what he knew now? He straight up would have let Ignatius take someone else instead. The torture sucked but, at least in Strange's mind, it was survivable. And a little bit of guilt and shame over the fact that he's a coward would be better than yet another contract from yet another fae on his head.

Still, he is going to lie through his fuckin teeth and not tell Yuya that in the slightest.

"You're welcome," Strange responds, with a little nod. "I'm a nightrunner, after all. It's our job to protect the carnival."

"I know, but--" Yuya shrugs a shoulder, a very faint smile finally ghosting back onto his face. "That means a lot to me. Saving Yuzu was part of my contract, and if Ignatius got her..."

When she had offered herself, well. Honestly Yuya probably would have done something exceptionally stupid to get her back, but he's not going to say that. Instead he glances up to Strange with a little more assurance in his face. "Gongenzaka and I talked to her, and she agreed to go home and finish her contract when the carnival isn't so dangerous. So she's gone now, but she's safer."

Strange just smiles, trying to push down the fact that pretty much every word Yuya says makes him feel worse and worse.

"I doubt she'll be happy that you're still here when the carnival is dangerous," Strange points out, with a wry little smile on his face. "Still, as you said, someone's got to protect Gongenzaka."

And Yuya's too good and too kind of a person to go back and wait it all out: Strange doubts he'll do that while people are still in danger.

If Yuya left, he could probably convince Gongenzaka to go with him. His second contract was only to stay with Yuya, after all. Still, Yuya's made other friends he also wants to watch over, and then there's Reira...

It's tempting, but he has to find his resolve to stay. "She understood, I think." Although she's probably expecting Gon to look after Yuya instead.

"I just hope things won't be like this for another year." He's not sure if they'd survive it.

Briefly, he deliberates putting his marshmallow over the fire before instead holding it over Strange's fire hair with a bit of a cheeky grin.

As Yuya puts the marshmallow over Strange's head, Strange remember that wait, he's got one also...except his marshmallow is now charcoal. Well damn.

"Hold it over my left hand where the scar is," Strange instructs, as he grabs a handful of marshmallows from the bag and shoves them in his mouth. Indeed, there's what looks like a nasty looking burn scar on the back of his left hand. Strange concentrates for a moment, activates his third eye, and then the scars on his hand, his forehead, and his right forearm light up with magical flame.

There we go. A bit of an easier way to roast a marshmallow that doesn't involve getting hair on it.

Yuya sees the scar before Strange activates his third eye, and so he forgets to even move his marshmallow at first. He doesn't exactly remember where all of Strange's scars are, but that one is new, isn't it?

He furrows his brow, pointing at the damaged hand with his marshmallow. "Did Ignatius do that? Steven said he was making you fight people."

"What, these?" And Strange vaguely gestures towards the various bits of him that are on fire with the hand that's not on fire. "No, these only happened when Ignatius reformed me." Which really is a sentence that Strange shouldn't be saying as nonchalantly as he is.

He pauses for a moment, debating what to say next. It's only a second or two before Strange settles on, "He didn't hurt me. Not like Nightshade did."

Yuya looks up to give Strange a skeptical look. "But he still brainwashed you, unless you're going to tell me you chose to fight them with Ignatius."

Yuya knows he wouldn't have. He knows how afraid Strange was of hurting someone because of that. Rita didn't tell him the extent of the injuries, but he doesn't believe the truth will make it better.

Not being like Nightshade doesn't mean it didn't hurt at all.

"Nightshade brainwashed me and tortured me," Strange points out the obvious, as he rubs the inside of his wrist, where the mirrored scratches caused by her thorns are.

"Ignatius didn't enthrall me until it was closer to the end of my stay with him—I was able to talk with Steven, remember? He wasn't even planning to make me fight the others to begin with: he only ordered me to do so when Lambert used the Athenaeum's magic to summon me directly into the fray."

If it sounds like Strange is defending Ignatius, that's because he is. There's a hint of defensiveness in Strange's tone as he explains things and he matches Yuya's skeptical look with a small frown of his own.

Yuya would probably have taken Strange's defense worse if he hadn't spoken to Rita first. But even she admitted to seeing something human in him. He knows there are Fae who can understand them, like the Ringmaster. The Summer Maiden.

Yuya's expression remains pinched as his gaze drifts, like he's searching for something in Strange's response. "Do you remember in the Summerlands, when I asked about the Fae understanding us? You didn't really believe it then. Is Ignatius different?"

It's not an accusation. Yuya's curious. He wants to know if Strange saw the same thing in one of the Summer Court--even one that hurt them.

There's not even a moment of hesitation before Strange answers, "He is."

It was just little things throughout their conversation that made Strange think so. The way Ignatius said he respected him. The way he followed the Courts but seemed so aggravated by them at the same time. The fact that he at least warned Strange before slipping his fingers into Strange's head and extracting information. There were so many little tells that seemed familiar, that reminded Strange of his friends in the army. He could easily picture himself with Ignatius in the peninsula, both of them complaining about the Portugese roads or plotting ways to obtain cannons, Strange taking his orders as he uses his magic to reshape entire forests.

Is this a dangerous train of thought about someone who did enthrall him? Possibly! Does Strange care? Not in the slightest.

"And he deserves better than whatever the hell Lambert and the rest forced him through."

With that confirmation Yuya smiles, bright and full of hope. Rita saw it, Strange believes it. Yuya can believe it, too. Even the Ringmaster had to have changed her mind at some point. All it took was someone showing her they were people with the same feelings.

"I want to meet him." Yuya declares, because of course he does. "The Ringmaster didn't kill him... that means he's staying here, right? I want to talk to Ignatius and see what he's like."

He's gonna try and befriend the Fae.

Of course he does. And Strange can't even judge Yuya's response, considering that one of the first things he asked the Ringmaster is if he can meet with Ignatius. Yuya's bright smile is matched with a smaller, yet equally hopeful one of Strange's own.

"You'll have to ask the Ringmaster first," he reminds Yuya. "And if you can meet him, I doubt it will happen for a while. He's been through a harrowing experience. Add in whatever the Ringmaster must have done to him to keep him from destroying the carnival, and I'm certain poor Ignatius is in recovery at the moment."

Strange has absolutely zero clue what the hell the Ringmaster must have done to Ignatius to keep him alive after apparently eating him. Likewise, he has no idea what the hell she would do to keep the literal Conflagration from destroying the carnival with a snap of his fingers. Whatever it is, it must have sucked tremendously: ergo, Strange is stepping back and letting the Ringmaster set any terms for the meet-up.

Yuya is also clueless, so when Strange softly talks his enthusiasm down he just snorts and shakes his head. "I know, I'll talk to her! I don't want to question him."

This will not be an interrogation on Yuya's end, anyway. He pulls his stick back to bite the marshmallow whole right off it. And continues talking while chewing confection because what are manners.

"I'm glad you're okay, Mr. Strange. I would have come save you too, but..." Well, he had to help Steven of course. "Anyway, I believed they wouldn't leave without you."

Considering that Strange is reaching right back into the bag to grab some more marshmallows, manners are for losers. He's not going to judge Yuya for talking with his mouth full, this isn't a fancy dinner setting.

"I believed that as well," Strange admits, with a little grin. "I wouldn't have agreed to Ignatius's terms otherwise." In an ideal world, he'd still have had a bit more time to negotiate terms and conditions. But as it is? The driving factor behind Strange's decision was that nobody got left behind.

He shoves the entire fistful of marshmallows in his mouth, to the point where it puffs up his cheeks like a chipmunk for a moment or two.

Yuya stares as Strange stuffs his face full of marshmallow, before covering his own mouth as he starts to laugh. Whatever awful things might come from pursuing the mirror or capturing Ignatius, those are in a future that can wait. Right now, Yuya's chest feels so much lighter just being able to be normal with his friends, no Fae or danger or death hanging over their heads.

He lines up a few marshmallows in a row along his stick before holding them back over the campfire properly.

"... Hey, can you make the fire into different shapes like you did at the lake?"

Strange chews and swallows the marshmallows before giving Yuya a smug little grin. Of course he can do precise magic like that! And really, it'd be a good idea to practice a bit more on the precision of fire magic, considering that Strange's main fire strategy is 'chuck a fireball at it.'

"What shape do you want to see?" He turns towards the fire, placing his hands out in front of him like he's about to cast the magic.

Yuya leans a little bit forward, which is the exact opposite of fire safety.

"Uh--oh! Make a lion." Did Strange mean simple shape? Yuya's expectations are definitely much greater than that.

To be honest, Strange was hoping for 'a square' or 'a tree'. Going right for a lion? He mutters something under his breath before he starts gesturing towards the fire, moving his hands in the air like the fire is clay and he can shape it from afar.

"You have to understand that this is equal parts my control over magic and my artistic ability. And while I like to think I'm fine at drawing buildings, animals have always been a bit of a challenge for me."

Which is the pompous Jonathan Strange way of saying he sucks at drawing. As he finishes casting the spell, Strange moves his hands closer to his body as he looks over at what passes for a lion. It is the derpiest looking lion known to man. But hey, it's an awful looking lion made entirely out of fire. Points for effort?

It's like when you constantly inflate your abilities, gullible people just assume you're exactly as hot shit as you say. Also, he made a water otter.

Yuya watches eagerly as the flames rise up, leaning back once the heat feels a little too strong as Strange tries to mold a fire lion. The result causes his childish grin to freeze on place as he stares.

"It's--" He crushes his fist to his mouth, trying really hard not to laugh at the awkward shape of the lion's face. He squeaks. "Really cool Mr. Strange!"

Really trying not to laugh.

Nobody had a lion for a daemon! The last time he's seen a lion in person had to be literal years ago! That is Strange's excuse and he is sticking with it. Thankfully, he knows his lion looks absolutely horrible. So, with a wave of his hand, it vanishes, turning back into a blob of fire.

"It's terrible, I know." But Strange has a small little smile on his face as he looks back at the flames, thinking of what to mold next. "But in my defense, I haven't seen a lion in a while."

He places his hands in front of him and the shape of the fire starts shifting again. This time it shifts into a polecat: specifically, Celandine, Lambert's daemon. It's a halfway decent likeness, though there are definitely a few wonky looking bits here or there. "That's better," Strange remarks, with a little nod.

Yuya coughs a little as he pounds his chest to suppress his laugh completely.

"I don't have any good pictures of lions." Seeing as all his duel monster cards are extremely cartoonish and Yuya also can't really draw.

Even a slightly wonky fire polecat is enough to be recognizable, at least,and he smiles more kindly. "Celandine, right?"

He shifts his stick out of the way before drawing it closer and testing the marshmallows before he takes a huge bite. "You should do this kind of stuff when you go back to England. After you break your curse."

"That's correct. I've seen Celandine enough that I think I make a halfway passable imitation." Strange gestures towards the polecat. It still stays close to the fire, not moving away from the radius of the pit, but the fire polecat starts to walk around, roll over, and do all sorts of adorable little polecat things.

He's prepared to go on a very nerdy magical rant about the importance of names and the symbolic properties of the source's location, and hypotheses of why he can make a damn good otter and seal but fail miserably at a lion, but Yuya's question stops any sort of ranting.

Right. When he goes back to England. At this point, now that he's talked with the Ringmaster, Strange isn't entirely sure when or if he'll ever see England again. He's not telling Yuya that though, instead forcing a smile on his face as he explains. "I might. My former mentor, a man named Gilbert Norrell, he wanted to make English magic respectable. For a while, I helped him. Perhaps if I do this sort of magic more often, I can start to undo the damage we did."

Because English magic shouldn't be respectable it should be full of life and joy, it should be something that is celebrated, not stuffed up with everything interesting removed. Strange pauses for just a moment, before he admits to Yuya. "As for my curse, if I don't break it myself within the next few months, I'm thinking of taking on another contract to ask the Ringmaster to break it for me."

Yuya watches the polecat roll around with a smile, absently listening to Strange until he gets to the curse.

Well that's surprising. Yuya's openly surprised at Strange's admission of another contract, especially for the curse, and he mentally clears right past the topic of English magic to focus on that. Strange was determined to do it on his own and not ask for her help last time, although that was weeks ago.

"Wait, really? What made you change your mind?" He's genuinely curious.
