Lapis likes to believe that the only reason she bothers coming to Lamberts' house now that her unwanted dog visitor has departed is because of Pumpkin, and certainly not the vague feelings of comfort and familiarity that Peridots' presence brings. Unfortunately while she can verbally deny such things, she's still drawn in by the other girl all the same.

Maybe it's just hormones. It's probably hormones, right? Lapis leans over Peridot, resting her arms and weight on her shoulders and looking around to her current studies

"Multi-universe theory." She comments, a hint of disappointment. Of course it's weird stuff. Why wouldn't it be weird stuff? Why wouldn't her life just give her something normal to deal with for once? "Seriously? Don't you have better hobbies?"

"What's wrong with doing research as your hobby?!" Peridot replies indignantly, trying to ignore the peculiar way that being in such close proximity to Lapis is making her skin tingle, and also making her palms kind of sweaty?

Lapis has been coming over more and more lately, which is a phenomenon that's sort of baffling to Peridot, as someone who has never been particularly socially adept. Not that she's really complaining... She likes having Lapis around, despite evidence to the contrary:

"This is a perfectly valid and important use of my time," she continues, pushing her glasses up her nose like the mega nerd that she is.

"Everything. You're not supposed to do research as a hobby. Reading books is a hobby, watching movies is a hobby. Research is not a hobby." To emphasize her point, Lapis snaps her arm forward to grab Peridots' book away from her, pulling back so she can read one of the passages from it.

"'Concerns have been raised about whether attempts to exempt the multiverse from experimental verification could erode public confidence in science and ultimately damage the study of fundamental physics'-- Seriously?" She crinkles her nose. "You could at least be researching something interesting."

Lapis winds up reading aloud over the outraged "HEY!" that Peridot snaps when her book is ripped out of her hands. She automatically attempts to lean across the other woman to try and snatch it back from her, grumbling sourly. "It's not like this is my preferred topic of choice," she says defensively, making another swipe for it. "Uuuugh Lapis-- At least let me save my place!"

There's a very subtle advantage that Lapis has over Peridot: Hieght. It's also not actually subtle, and Lapis makes the difference clearly known as she holds the book up above Peridots' head like the bully she is.

She's also subtly using her thumb to keep Peridots' place, though it might be hard to tell with the way she's waving it obnoxiously. "If it's not your preferred topic of choice then there's no point in going any further."

Jump. Jump. pause. JUMPJUMPJUMPJUMPJUMP-- Like a particularly determined jack russel terrier, she makes a few valiant attempts at springing straight up to try grabbing it back anyway (height difference be damned), but it doesn't really take long for her to catch on to the fact that she's really just humiliating herself by even trying.

"Uuuuuugh fine, take it! See if I care, you traitor!" Peridot groans, stomping a short distance away and flopping backwards onto her bed, dramatically flinging an arm over her face. "It's not like I was making any headway on my research anyway..."

It is definitely funny, watching Peridot jump and try and grasp the book like a particularly determined dog, though her fun is cut short when Peridot gives up. At which point Lapis lets her stomp off to the bed, and puts the book on the desk. But not before dog-earing the page, to many a librarians dismay.

She's rude, but she's not completely rude.

After setting it aside, she takes her rightful place by Peridot. Forcefully, that is, jostling the entire bed on purpose when she does.

"So, are you going to lay there moping or are you actually going to be a good host now and put a movie in for us to watch?"

Helpfully, Peridot groans wordlessly and gestures vaguely with her free arm towards her DVD shelf, as if to say 'pick something out'.

It's a very sparse collection. Peridot's the kind of person who only has a few DVDs of her absolute favorites that she watches over and over to death, and anything else she wants to try she just pirates. It's total contents basically include whatever this world's flimsy analogues are for: Jupiter Ascending, the entirety of the Harry Potter film franchise, and every single season that's available of Degrassi.

She just sat down.

She sends A Look to Peridot, before dragging herself upwards again to go through the meagre DVD collection. And promptly chooses season 5 before reclaiming her spot on Peridots bed again.

"I can't believe you actually have every season of this. Here I thought you were entirely a killjoy."

Peridot removes the arm from her face and goggles at Lapis all wide-eyed. "You watch this show too?"

"Of course I do. Everyone in my class does, for that matter." She waves dismissively. "I'm more surprised you watch it, though. Teen drama doesn't exactly seem like your kind of thing."

"Are you kidding me!?" Peridot exclaims, sitting up rather suddenly. "Such a vast an intricate story... How could anyone NOT love it!?"

"No offense but you definitely don't seem like the romantic type." At all. No one that Lapis knows that's that into weird research has ever gotten laid. Probably. She's fairly certain, anyway. "So I fail to see how exactly relatable this kind of teen drama is to you."

Peridot scoffs. "It's not like this show is just about romance. There are other facets to the narrative as well. Friendship, school politics, finding ways to fit in..."

She trails off awkwardly, like she's aware that she has just revealed a bit too much. She does not, notably, challenge the statement that she's not really the romantic type.

"You wan to fit in." She repeats slowly, clearly slightly incredulous. "You." She points this time. It's not that she can't see how Peridot wouldn't fit in it's more that she's... Well, a little too headstrong, in a word, from what Lapis knows about her.

Honestly the fact she's a werebeast is extremely down the list on reasons why Peridot wouldn't possibly fit in considering this god forsaken city of weirdness.

Peridot puffs herself up defensively. "Yeah, so? Doesn't everyone?"

"Oh calm down, I'll have you know I've mastered the art of fitting in." And also denying the supernatural." She waves her hand, like she is absolutely the most popular girl at school. She's not, but that's more for bad attitude than anything else.

"You want some pointers?"

She looks... Incredibly skeptical, side-eyeing Lapis warily. "Maybe..." She's not sure she can trust whatever advice Lapis is willing to give, but surely it can't hurt to hear her out...

Well, Peridot is about to get a hands on demonstration whether she likes it or not, because Lapis immediately sets about pulling that skeptical look into a forced smile with her thumbs.

"That squinty eyed suspicious look doesn't exactly help you, you know."

Peridot grunts with surprise and tries to pull back, but Lapis is too quick for her.

Her mouth may be pulled into a grin, but she is definitely not smiling with her eyes.

"Duly noted," she growls, the words warped by the unnatural shape her lips are pulled into.

"You should probably work on that bad attitude too." She says, just pointing it out helpfully. She's also not letting go of Peridots face just yet, instead opting to suddenly squish it before she does. "If you want to fit in you might wanna work on getting people to like you."

"Mmmpphh--" She rubs her cheek with one hand, scowling. "I don't want to have to change to fit in," she mutters, glancing away. "I just want to find a place where I can fit in and still be me."

Which is an incredibly high-school thing for a college student to be saying but. Peridot has a lot of baggage that she has yet to sort out. Call her a late bloomer.

"I don't think that's how social life works." Lapis points out with a wave of her hand that suggests sagely knowing. "Your second best bet then would to just be dating someone popular, by proxy making you popular." She's seen it before, on TV shows and the like. Once or twice in real life too.

Peridot blushes uncomfortably. "Alright that's enough. I think I've had more than my fill of your 'advice' for one afternoon," she huffs, drawing herself up to sit cross legged on the bed.

"My advice is good advice. I'd date you." Which probably isn't the best thing to blurt out to someone who you've only known for a week or two, but whatever, it's out there anyway, and Lapis can downplay it like a champ. "Pumpkin is worth at least that much."

That's a terrible bait and switch, Lapis. And Peridot's not good enough at gauging people to read between the lines here. She barely even acknowledges her heart skipping a beat in hopeful surprise before she's frowning at that tacked on comment.

"So you're saying that... I'm worth dating. But. Only because I have a superlative dog," Peridot replies dryly.
