HARBINGERS OF VOID↴![]() On Day 16, the Harbingers begin revealing their new selves... in the form of wreaking havoc on the city! CY-Ren isn't looking for mass panic or serious structural damage - instead she wants constant annoyances and distractions, of the sort that will keep those that might be on her tail distracted from her true plans. However, when Creation is faced with the threat of twelve new Harbingers, it will have to fight in kind... ► HARBINGERS: Your job is to use your powers to create messes for other people to clean up! CY-Ren gives no specific instructions outside of a general framework... flex your powers! See what you can do. Don't destroy the city or anything, but give Creation a run for its money. She needs these civilians alive for her later plans. ► STAR GUARDIANS: Twelve members of the carnival have been chosen by Creation to fight in its name, even if they don't realize it yet. When confronted by the Harbinger's chaos, their Sparks will make themselves known in whatever form is appropriate to the character - and they will be asked if they are willing to use the power of their soul to fight the darkness. How this scene plays out can be flexible, but essentially they will find themselves faced with the question: are they willing to fight for the preservation of life? If they say yes, their Spark will emerge, and they will be able to trigger a magical girl transformation, as you do. ► CHARITY CONCERT: While everyone else is busy with the sudden rise of the Harbingers, CY-Ren's PR team is releasing a statement -- they will say that new information has revealed that there had been bomb threats made against the canceled concert, which are now being blamed for the damages. CY-Ren will make a personal statement, saying that in order to apologize for the failure of her previous performances, a new free to attend event is being planned for the near future - people who had tickets to the previous event and had to go home early get top priority! |

"Every hurt and heartache we've ever felt... was a reminder of it. Maybe there's no overdue fees, but still!"
She's switching to a fire whip, instead of throwing fire balls...? That seems trickier to dodge. A good, inconvenient choice on her part.
His bone... it's different than his monster magic bones. A bone-shaped construct of dust, not magic, that he can shape to different hardnesses and purposes. He readies it, and flings it in her direction; wherever it hits, be it her body, her weapon, or the ground by her feet, it shatters into a cloud of dust. Dust infused with feelings of fear, of wanting to get away.

She waves a hand to try and protect herself, but it's no use. The dust reaches her, and contact with it sends a chill to her very core.
Thoughts and feelings that were supposed to be safely buried abruptly resurface, gripping Rita's mind. The skeletal appearance of her opponent. Corpses. Death. Things irrational and unknown... maybe even unknowable. A possibility she never wanted to consider: that the Void could win, that everything she loves could be destroyed, and that she might die here, fighting a futile fight, instead of going back to see them one last time...
"No..."
Rita shudders and steps back, arms wrapped around herself as if to ward herself against the terror. Her weapon, forgotten, falls to the ground and dissipates into a thin line of smoke.

The specific images, the faces of her fears, he can't see any of that. But her reaction speaks volumes.
"Isn't it terrible?" He asks, sympathetic and conversational. "Feelings like those... just one of many things nobody wants, and yet, you'd fight to keep?"
As he speaks, he forms another bone in his grip. This one, if she doesn't somehow wake to the same realization CY-Ren led them to... Forced sleep, with pleasant dreams, would be best. Leaving her in a state of fear would be cruel, especially since she's been a friend.
no subject
He's right. This fear, this helplessness... it's unbearable. She wants it to stop.
"I can't run away..." she utters, choking the words out through gritted teeth. "If I give up now, everything I've learned will have been for nothing. I can't accept that!"
If only she could think straight, if only she had more power, Rita knows she could figure out a solution, a way to survive this, and a way to make the world better, so that even an idiot wouldn't think of ending it...!
As if responding to that desperate wish, a faint glow begins to emanate from her chest, right about where her heart is.

Because for all that he's been feeling little doubts and hesitations about things, since nearly the beginning... When he hears the flimsy arguments others have to bring up? That resolution is so much stronger, more reassuring.
"All of it's already for nothing. The end... it's going to happen, it needs to happen. Running away, staying to fight... It doesn't make a difference. All we can change is how fast it..." He trails off, seeing a light appearing from her chest. From... near her heart. "happens? Hey, is that your soul? You're not dying, are you?"
no subject
One who would use reason and understanding to change the course of the world...
Will you use the power of your soul to fight for the preservation of life?
Of course she will. There's no question.
The light grows brighter, and when Rita reaches for it, it takes on a physical form. Pulling her hand away from her chest, she reveals an amulet with an orange jewel, still emitting a gentle glow. "My soul...?" She's calmer than just moments ago, her awakening Spark allowing rational thought to begin to push back against the fear. "Close. It's my Spark." Though she says it with certainty, there's astonishment in her expression.
The good news is that she definitely isn't dying. Not now, and not anytime soon.

He's seen sparks before, the cores of self that could take the shape of things important to them. They hadn't been lights, gentle and protected in jewelry, but glimmers of darkness floating free and vulnerable outside them. Seeing his had made him a little nervous, aware how he could still be hurt. Seeing Rita's, as she becomes so much more calm and confident...
"You have got to be kidding," he exclaims, and if it's envy he's feeling, he doesn't acknowledge it. It's just... shock. Surprise.
A hundred little calculations run through his skull, and he steps back. Either nothing's really going to come of this, it's just that the Carnival people have uniquely powerful spark and that's why the Void picked some of them, or... he remembers, CY-Ren had a Star Guardian counterpart, that Noa who first contacted the carnival. Maybe she's contacted the forces of Creation in some way, made underlings of her own...?
If so, well, this is Rita! She wouldn't kill anybody, especially after lecturing him about it, but she might fight. And a fight between their powers could be the kind of flashy, chaos-causing distraction he's supposed to be causing. So, this is probably good! It's fine! He can handle it.

"I don't kid around," she says simply, then raises the gem up above her head. A powerful wind kicks up around her, carrying loose papers that seem to have materialized out of nowhere. Under the cover of the whirlwind, Rita's clothes disintegrate, then reform into her colorful Guardian uniform.
The flying pages then gather against the amulet and with a flash of light, bind themselves into the form of her weapon: a large, floating book with an orange jewel embedded in the cover.
The wind dies down, leaving Rita looking over her new appearance in surprise. "This is my power..." she murmurs. Then, as if struck by sudden inspiration, she faces Papyrus with renewed confidence and declares, "The light that shines through the darkness of ignorance... Knowledge!"
If anyone brings it up later, Rita will absolutely deny ever saying something that cheesy, and she'll especially deny sounding so proud of it.

Just in case, he decides not to use his powers to inspire fear in quite the same way, in the future. One is enough.
"It's strange... Maybe Creation orders things different, or, you're too new to that power?" He tilts his head, considering her, then shrugs with the bone still in his hand. "Or you're overestimating its strength. Because with knowledge... You should know how futile the light is."
After all, it was knowledge, pain, and mercy that brought him here. Knowledge of the sorts of things he learned in the Void - truths of the world, of themselves, that people bury in ignorance to avoid. Those pains that make life unlivable, if admitted to. The mercy to act to end that suffering.
...The other thing Rita doesn't know is, Papyrus owns a hand-crank memory projector, and he's not likely to forget this moment. Fortunately, he's also not likely to think to show it to anybody, or have a reason to.

"The world's not perfect... that much is obvious. But it can change. People can make things better; they just don't always know how." Even Rita, for all the pride she has in her problem-solving capacity, made some terrible mistakes in the past. But with understanding problems comes the potential for solving them.
"Averting our eyes from the truth, giving up and letting it all end... all that does is keep us from finding solutions!"

Remembers, too, encouraging it in his subjects, after the other major figures of the underground disappeared, and hope faded from the kingdom. Feeling so hurt when they wouldn't, couldn't accept it, and just... gave up. Laid down... fell down...
"It doesn't matter!" Papyrus insists again, clenching both fists because he can't think like that - he isn't lying down but acting, and besides, he's seen how it just causes more suffering.
"Better isn't good enough! Nothing you can think up... will ever make up for the wrongness in all things. That light's turning your eyes from the truth, but I... I've been endarkened. Nothing's blocking me from seeing the truth... Or doing what's necessary!"
