TRIALS & TRIBULATION↴![]() After a day of cleansing and processing, where all the belongings and attire of their old lives are stripped away and replaced with something newer and more form fitting, the former members of the carnival will find themselves let loose into the Farm for the first time. A sizable green area, filled with orchards growing inorganic looking fruits and field ready for tending, the Farm is where they will be spending their days for the forseeable future. Food and drink are no longer needed, and so every day is an endless cycle of work. Technicians are seen only when necessary, and when being taken from your place of work to your lonesome cells at night. Every day, there are new postings on the "Production Board", where various dire sound scientific trials ask for subjects. The majority won't be forced, at least not yet, but the system is at work to push its participants to the brink and force their hand. After all, volunteers make the best subjects. ► PRODUCTIVITY: As explained elsewhere, characters will be forced to compete to attain enough Productivity Point to be considered Satisfactory. There are literally not enough points to go around for everyone to attain this, which means that at least some people will be deemed "Below Expectations" by the end of the first four-day cycle. What this means has yet to be discovered, but the Technicians have grimly warned against it. Productivity involves many tasks, including orchard picking, tilling, planting, harvesting, watering, maintenance, and more. Any task you can think of that would take place on a plantation is applicable here. Beyond that, the Production Board awaits you, offering precious Productivity Points in exchange for your cooperation. How you become Satisfactory is up to you, but it's every person for themselves. Only one person can turn in the credit for harvesting or preparing fields, and while you can certainly try to help others by letting them take credit for your work, it's a sure fire way to fall behind the herd, especially if you are already in a low Classification. Fruits and fields will miraculously grow overnight, and will be ready for a new day when you are. You've been told not to eat anything you harvest, but right now you aren't hungry anyway. ► POLARIS BY NIGHT: During the night, you are left alone to your thoughts and maybe an annoying roommate. Solo or in pairs, the entire night will be spent in small sleep pods, as shown on the locations post. Is it possible to sneak out? It doesn't seem like it is, but who is to say? The real question is if you want to dare to try. There is one hour of rest before and after seven hours of darkness. Even if you don't usually have to sleep, you'll find yourself oddly weary and inclined to rest. Supernaturally, almost. ► PARTICIPATION: Sometimes participation in experimental trials is manditory, sometimes it isn't. You are free to handwave your character having been pulled aside for minor examinations, such as blood tests or aura scans. Each time, you will be pulled into a separate part of the station and analyzed by a Technician and heavily automated machinery. Anymore more complex than basic check-up level tests will be posted about in a section called "TRIALS" in the body of the post below. |

The character will be brought into an empty, white room, with no windows or vents. Once the door closes, it is practically gone. They will be given the following instructions, by voice over some kind of intercom:
1) They will be informed that there will be no base points awarded for this trial. All time spent in this trial will be actively taking away from what they could have been earning at the Farm. The trial will run as long as it has to.
2) While in this room together, the two must together decide which one of them will be promoted and which one will be demoted. The one that is chosen to be promoted will be instantly raised to the next classification rank, even if that classification rank is Delta. The one chosen to be demoted will be instantly lowered a classification rank, even if that rank is Theta.
3) Their powers will be returned for the duration of the trial. It will not allow them to leave the room, but they will be able to act on each other in any way that does not control the other's will directly.
4) Killing the other person in the room will automatically allow you to make the choice for both parties on your own, as the last one standing. If both parties are killed, both will be demoted.
5) Both subjects will remain in the cell until the decision is made, no matter how many hours or days it takes.
Please thread out, summary post, or OOCly negotiate the outcome and the discussion between the characters here, until they reach a final decision.

He hunkers down onto his haunches without even looking at Joker, wrapping both sets of arms around himself.
"Hey, so," he says, sounding a bit light headed. "I don't really wanna spend a long time talking about this."

All he can think is that he's glad he went with the gut feeling to sign up with Sans when he was offered. He can imagine, in detail, what would have happened if he'd gone with Ginko or Doll.
"Ha, same," Joker says, the sound hollow out of his mouth. "Yer already, ah, Epsilon, yeah?" He raises an eyebrow. "Already as high as ya can go."

So, the shit list.
"The other way... you just take my place."
There's already a note of bitterness there. This was a terrible idea.

On one hand, the whole point between him wanting to do these trials has been so that he himself could get to a better position. It's not that he thinks he'd ever be seen as valuable as, say, Peridot or Alphys when it comes to brain, but anything is better... and it could mean he could spare a bit more to people like Doll or Steven.
But that's short term thinking, isn't it...? Eta isn't the end. That's Theta, the last of the last chances. Eta, well, it will suck ass, but if he's willing to put in a lot more work, take a lot more chances, maybe make a couple of enemies who might not even matter in the end...
He rushes through his options, weighing the pros and cons as quickly as he cans, before he makes his decision. Walking over to the wall- he feels a lot better than when he went through that last trial, at least he can see- he raps his knuckles against it.
"Alright, I've made my decision!" he announces to the room at large, figuring that the technicians can hear him. "I'll take that demotion, if ya please." A glance over at Sans. "Unless my partner has any objections."

"Uh?" Is all he can manage to say. Like he's offering Joker a chance to reconsider or explain himself before he says anything to decisively end the matter.

"Oi, I thought ya said ya wanted this ta be done quickly?" he asks. "Besides, yer smart, right? So Delta will suit ya. I mean, if they did more things like this, maybe it'd suit me..." A shrug. "But, well, a big brother has ta look after the younger siblings, right?" He nods his head purposefully at Sans, making sure to establish eye contact.
In other words... Not just his Doll. Papyrus will be left behind, too, if Sans really does make it to Delta.
It's a gamble, trusting that Sans will be able to do anything at all as a Delta, and will do anything for him in exchange for giving him this position... but Joker's not afraid to roll the dice.
High rewards come for a little risk-taking, after all.

Yet, the split is happening now. Slowly, his hands visibly shaking a little with sheer etheric adrenaline, he stands up. He doesn't want to do this while rolling around on the floor like a fucking self-pitying chump.
"...Right," he finally says, closing his eyes. When he opens them again they are narrowed, avoiding Joker's look. He speaks loudly, to address the technicians. "It's a deal. I go up, he goes down."
It only takes a few moments for the trial to register the decision. The door reappears, opening for them to leave. A pair of technicians wait on the other side.

Joker takes a quick second to let out a breath before he twists on his heel, following the sound of a door opening. "Glad we didn't keep ya waitin' too long," he says, feeling his heart picking up a little bit. "Waste of work time, huh?"
And it will be a waste of time for him; he'll need to hurry right back into it. Possibly even doing something dirty to keep himself afloat. Who will he have to screw over for that...?
Even as he steps forward, expecting to be escorted back, he keeps an eye on Sans. After all, he's a Delta, now. Surely he won't be escorted back to the Farm, right...?

"Epsilon-706, going forward your Classification will now be Delta-701," they say. "As such, you will no longer be staying with the Eta, Zeta, and Epsilon classes. You will no longer be required to work on the Farm, as your productivity will be made up through more important work."
Sans doesn't really look all that psyched, and just stays quiet for the explanation. "Gotcha," he says quietly and awkwardly.
"Come with us, and we will begin your introduction."
Sans hesitates long enough to give Joker a look of acknowledgement, then does his best to steady himself and follow along.
He is not expecting this to go anywhere good.
