⇨ THE MASQUERADE

Who: Everyone! Attendance is mandatory.
When: Late Day 65
Where: The Celebration
What: The Masquerade arrives, and so does the carnival's enemies. For more info, check out the Draculas 101.
Warnings: Further party hell. Also, vampire violence, mind control, etc.

THE HOST & THE HORDE

The time of the Masquerade arrives. You've been given free reign of the place up till now, but a few hours before the party commences the Host will inform you that your presence will be required, and will assist you (forcibly, if need be) to sort out any last minute costuming concerns you might have if you've left it until now. When masks and outfits are sorted, you'll be left to your own devices until you are summoned on the evening of Day 65.

The Masquerade will start off normally - relative to everything else in this place, at least. Everyone in the Celebration will be called in for this event, centered in a grand hall with side rooms offered to those that need them for whatever reasons might come up. The food and drink is especially ambrosia-esque this evening, and the music will stir your soul, even if you're not usually a music person. Enjoy it if you can - the peace won't last.

► MASKS: Though the masks seemed only mundane before, once within the Masquerade atmosphere, they will magically begin obscuring people's identities beyond what a normal mask should be able to do. When a person is wearing one, it would be supernaturally difficult to figure out who they are - maybe you forget what their voice should sound like, or maybe the other details escape you. Of course, it's possible to figure out if you look for it, based on general shapes and personality traits, but unless you know someone well it could be a challenge. Of course, you can just take your mask off and remove the enchantment entirely - though the Host will hassle you if they notice you going without. Stop ruining the party!

► TEMPTATION: Though it's felt easy to be whisked away by the draw of pleasure and luxury during the rest of the week, that feeling will seem to come to a head at the actual party. If you are aware of what needs to be resisted then it's possible to fight back and ignore it, but more than ever it feels all too easy to just dance your life away. Nobody seems to be dying from it, at least, or 'burning out' any faster as a result - it's mostly just extremely distracting from other concerns. Like vampires, for instance.

VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE
It's during the latter half of the party that things will start to go bad. Though it will go unseen by the carnival, the Masquerade has gained an additional set of guests - the vampire's of the demon lord that has been chasing them for the last several months. The Host doesn't discriminate, and anyone is welcome to attend the Celebration, provided they don't start a fight.

Right. About that.

► THE KINDRED: The vampires don't like to play fair, which means that they are going to be attacking with stealth and trickery - taking advantage of the way that the party has dulled the alertness of many of the carnival's workers. They'll be using that lack of inhibition to lure individuals into places they can be attacked or turned in private - their primary goals are to capture the Supervisors and to turn as many of the Ringmaster's workers as possible before escaping back to their dimension. Some of their targets will be gone before anyone has a chance to notice.

Remembering that they will be avoiding big public confrontations, so if anyone starts one of those it will probably by the carnival members striking back. This is going to wear on the Host's patience extremely quickly.

► COLD IRON: Oh, right, and they are definitely bringing iron weapons - as pure as they could get. They'll have things like iron collars or shackles to try to trap people with, as well as iron daggers and guns with iron bullets. They'll have to be on the down low with, but they are going to exploit that weakeness as much as possible. Those that have only been in the carnival a few months will mostly just feel discomfort at the touch of it - as if they are touching something that is slightly too hot or too cold. Veterans that have been around for years will find its touch to be burningly cold - the type of temperature that would threaten to destroy flesh after prolonged contact. Those that have been here for up to three years will take it the worst. See the Transformations page for more details!

► TURNING THE TABLES: Being turned is a mixture of pleasure and pain, and is often hard for mortals to mentally reconcile as it happens to them. Being drained by these vampires is simultaneously impossibly satisfying and extremely terrifying - once they've started in on your, the way it overwhelms your mind and body can make it nearly impossible to stop them without help. Once you are dead or dying, they will feed you their blood - at which point your body will go through a painful transformation as the demon spirit takes its place inside of you and your dead body is violently resurrected.

As soon as you wake up, freshly changed, the bloodlust will set it - it will be extremely hard to control, and at first all you will think about is wanting to sate that hunger. Combined with your sire having direct control if your mind through your blood connection, new vampires will be mostly incapable of doing anything but following the whims of the rest of the vampire pack and seeking nourishment. This blood lust will begin to fade after they've fed. Killing isn't necessary to feed, but it can be hard to stop yourself, as a neonate vampire.

► CLOSING TIME: Before the party is officially over, the Host will have had enough. Before you can pursue all of the vampires or take back the people they've stolen, the lot of them will have escaped back to their dimension, and the Host will have kicked the entire carnival out for participating in so much violence. If you want to make any final moves before you go, this is the time.

[Hinawa needs a drink, too, only she needs it from somebody's neck. She comes up behind the man, still straining to defy the command in her head, but shies away when he speaks. It's someone from the Carnival.]

Guns? Who has guns? Are they the Agents?

[She knows exactly who he's talking about, of course, and her voice shaking isn't from fear of any Agents, it's from fear of what she's about to do.]
kingsroads: (GIVE IT UP FOR MAGIC)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-02-27 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[ As he hears the woman's voice, Strange turns around, clumsily sloshing some water out of his cup. He doesn't recognize Hinawa...but then again, that's to be expected considering the enchantment placed on all of them.

Agents. She must be someone from the Carnival as well, he can't think of any other reason why someone would mention the Agents. And really, it is a valid thought. For a moment Strange is worried she's right..except for the fact that why would the Agents be here in the first place?
]

I don't think so, [ Strange responds, trying to keep his voice calm. He can't help but frown a little as he thinks things over. ] They were from a world without any magic. How on Earth could they reach the Celebration in the first place?

[ after all, it's not like one could just walk up to this place. ]

I hate that there are other people out there with those terrible weapons.

[That much is true. Especially when she knows firsthand that the vampires have all sorts of nasty tricks without the guns!]

What should we do?

[Her voice lowers as she takes the opportunity to draw closer to him. The scent of his blood is almost overwhelming. It's horrible.]
kingsroads: (well fuuuuuuck)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-02-28 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
[ She was asking him to help. He had to take charge, he had to be the one to decide what to do in this situation. How absolutely terrifying to be the person that others look up to in times of a crisis. He's not entirely sure he likes it. ]

Well, [ Strange responds after a pause. He needed to come up with something. As the woman draws closer, he gives her a smile that's hopefully reassuring. ] I can take you somewhere safe, if you wish. My magics let me travel between mirrors. I could take you back to your room and you'll wait out the vampire attack there.
sunflowerfields: (You'll never know)

[personal profile] sunflowerfields 2017-02-28 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Look, literally anyone has a better grasp on this situation than she does right now.]

You can do that? I would appreciate that very much. But what about you?
kingsroads: (sadly resigned)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-01 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you needn't worry about me. I'm certain I'll be fine.

[ Strange gives her a small, reassuring smile. He's no idea if he will actually be fine or not. But, well, that's something he's going to have deal with later. He offers Hinawa his hand in a gesture of goodwill. ]

Come. Let us find a mirror and get you to safety.

[personal profile] sunflowerfields 2017-03-01 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
[If Hinawa knew anything at all about vampires, she would know why looking for a mirror is a bad idea. Instead, the thought of getting back to her room, where she can lock herself away from anyone she could potentially hurt, sounds wonderful right now. She takes his hand, gasping because she can feel his pulse.]

O-okay, just lead the way.

[This nightmare will be over soon. She hopes.]

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-01 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
[ He gives Hinawa's hand a small squeeze, trying desperately to be reassuring. Still holding onto it, he starts to lead her away from the main ballroom towards the private rooms. The one he had been in when the thing attacked him had a mirror...perhaps others would as well. If not, then at least she could stay in there by herself and barricade the door while he went off to find another mirror.

Strange is keeping an eye out for other vampires as well, honestly paying not that much attention to Hinawa. He starts talking though, mostly for the sake of talking than anything else.
]

I must admit, magicians and mirrors is a bit of a cliche in my world. Still, I've found that I've got a bit of an affinity with them. They're easy to navigate and don't ruin your flooring the way that water does.
sunflowerfields: (I'll never know)

[personal profile] sunflowerfields 2017-03-01 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[His squeezing her hand doesn't help in the slightest. If anything, it makes her want to grab his wrist and sink her teeth in and drink and drink and drink...

Hinawa gasps as she forces herself to focus. It's getting harder to as they leave the party, now they're alone and no one will see if- no, stop! She just has to hold out a little longer...

It occurs to her that Strange is talking as they're walking, and she needs to say something. She swallows hard, but her throat feels so dry.]

Oh, my. Where I'm from, we only use mirrors to comb our hair in the morning. I never thought they'd have such interesting uses!
kingsroads: (thnx flora you are actually helpful)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-01 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Most people where I'm from do the same, [ he replies, with a small, slightly nervous laugh. ] It's only because I'm a magician that I am able to travel through mirrors like this.

[ Despite the fact that he's still wearing his mask, Strange knows that he's kind of giving a lot away. After all, it's no big secret that he doesn't shut up about being a magician and his affinity for mirrors is only slightly a secret. But Hinawa's given no reason for him not to trust her yet, and Strange is still fairly trusting to begin with.

There's one of the private rooms. He grins as the two head towards it. A knock on the door proves that nobody's in there (or if anyone is in there to begin with, they're being awfully quiet) so he pushes the door open, holding it open for Hinawa to enter.
]

[personal profile] sunflowerfields 2017-03-02 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[Meanwhile, it's killing her that she can't be as honest right now. More than anything she wants to tell him that there's something wrong with her, that she's on the verge of doing something awful, and he's in danger just being near her. But it's taking every last shred of willpower to stay focused and ignore the voice in her mind (Hers? No, it has to be the stranger that did this to her, right?) telling her to kill him.]

We're here! What a relief!

[Hinawa wastes no time taking the entrance provided for her. She's going to make it! They're so close. She's fairly certain who this man is, now, and she reminds herself that she needs to do something nice for them once this is all over. Perhaps she'll bake him something.]

There we are, a mirror! That one will do, right?

[She rushes to the full-length mirror by the wardrobe, but her sudden burst of enthusiasm deflates immediately as she stands in front of it.

There's nothing there.

No reflection.]
kingsroads: (hrrmph)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-02 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He notices that lack of a reflection right as she does. That doesn't necessarily mean vampire though, right? It could just be a weird Carnival change? Who knows. Needless to say, Strange has tensed up a bit and is definitely more on guard.

Still, even if she was a vampire, she wanted to leave here. Which...is good, right. Unless she's lying and just wanted to bring him somewhere private so she could kill him, oh Strange you idiot, that's probably what this is.

He walks towards the mirror, keeping an eye on Hinawa all the while. But it's obvious his demeanor has shifted slightly: he's way more suspicious now, trying to somehow watch Hinawa and watch the mirror at the same time. Placing a hand on the mirror, he mutters something under his breath, still watching her.
]

There. The spell should be active now. Simply walk through this mirror and you'll pass through to the mirror in your room--and don't worry, it will only take a moment.

[ And well, if she tries to attack him then he'll just pass through the mirror himself and leave her here. ]

[personal profile] sunflowerfields 2017-03-05 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[KILL HIM HE KNOWS

The command shoots through her head like a sudden, piercing headache, and Hinawa presses her hands against her temples. She grimaces, and for once her fangs are fully on display. If she can just get through that mirror, this will all be over. Only now, her feet feel rooted to the ground.]

I can't... I can't...
kingsroads: (well fuuuuuuck)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-05 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Oh God. So he was right. Those fangs are a clear and present sign that she's a vampire, how stupid of him to let her lure him in here to begin with.

But...she's not doing anything. Strange still watches Hinawa, not moving away from the mirror as she places her hands to her head. This was unexpected.
]

I've a feeling that you want to attack me, [ Strange calmly responds, as he looks at Hinawa, still not moving from his spot close to the mirror. The spell's active, if she tries to attack, he'll just slip through the mirror and prevent her from following. But man, if he can convince her to just leave this place, that's one less vampire to worry about. ] Or, at least, something wants you to attack me. You don't have to listen to that feeling.
sunflowerfields: (I'll think of you)

[personal profile] sunflowerfields 2017-03-08 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[KILL HIM NOW

Hinawa sinks to the ground, turning into an over-sized pile of fabric thanks to her gown, palms still pressed into her temples.]

I'm sorry, I'm so sorry I lied to you. I don't know what's happening to me. You should hide, before something happens. There are monsters here!
kingsroads: (shit i'm gonna have to eat the mouse)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-08 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[ This isn't working. Strange doesn't know any spells he could use to just shove her through the mirror. And likewise, he doesn't want to leave Hinawa here...but he also doesn't want to be attacked by one of the vampires again. Though the fact that she's trying her hardest to resist whatever's controlling her...it's admirable, but worrying.

As much as he hates to admit it, maybe she's right. If he leaves now and then comes back later, at least he won't be attacked...and at least he knows more about the vampires now.

He takes a few steps closer to the mirror, backing up towards it with his back against the glass.
]

At least tell me your name. I'll be able to tell others at the carnival about what happened to you.

[ Despite the fact that Strange asks Hinawa for her name, he is still not taking off his mask in the first place. ]
sunflowerfields: (I'll think of you)

[personal profile] sunflowerfields 2017-03-14 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[She can't bear to even look at him anymore. The urge is overwhelming and she trembles as she stares at the ground.]

Hinawa. My name is Hinawa. Now, please, you've got to get out of here.
kingsroads: (well phooey)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-14 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Strange gives Hinawa a little nod. ]

Best of luck.

[ And then he takes a few steps backwards and magically vanishes into the mirror, leaving Hinawa alone in the room. He...honestly doubts everything will turn out fine for Hinawa. The least he can do is mention her being turned to someone else back at the carnival. That poor woman. ]
