[open] december will be magic again

Who: everyone!
When: the evening of D15
Where: A small meeting hall on the moon, close to the portal to the carnival
What: a whole bunch of show-offs meet up to show off their magic, people interested in magic come to learn about said magic, and other people show up to see if something inevitably gets set on fire. (aka mage club)
Warnings: none so far, will edit if needed.

The meeting hall is a large open space, with hardwood floors and a rustic decor. A few chairs and tables are scattered around, though there aren't enough for the amount of people who'll hopefully show up. Some food has been set out: mostly finger foods (tiny sandwiches, fruit, veggies & dip) though there are some savory options and plenty of home-baked cookies, courtesy of Rin. Drink wise, there's water, hot chocolate, hot tea, and a few bottles of wine because tipsy magic sounds like an awesome idea and this is what happens when the alcoholic makes the dinner menu. Aside from the food table and the few tables, there's not much of anything in the room: plenty of open space for showing off or getting out of the way of someone who wants to show off.

One of the doors of the meeting hall leads to the outside. There's a wider, 'backyard' sort of area with plenty of room for people to cast magic as large and impressive as they want. A fire pit stands outside also for warming your hands and other fire-based magic. Please don't set the building on fire.

This is all very informal. If pressed for details, Strange would have told anyone to just come whenever, stay as long as you like, and so on and so forth. The emphasis is on learning about each other's magic, displaying one's skills and talents, and helping anyone who wished to learn magic decide on a path for them to take.

Showing off is just a given.

"Fine by me. Let's go, then." Rita walks ahead of him, taking only a brief detour to retrieve her red winter coat (tailored to fit around her wings) and slip it on. From her haste, it's easy enough to see how eager she is to show off this ability of hers.

Once they're outside and have some space from the building and the other attendees, she turns to face him, arms folded. "How about here?"

Strange follows Rita out further away from the building, using that detour to put on his coat as well. Once they're out in the middle, he frowns a little, looking at the snow. "Here works for me."

Bending down to the ground, Strange touches the snow. As he mutters under his breath, ice forms from his fingers, flattening the snow into a patch of ice...that's about three feet wide. As he stands back up, Strange winces slightly. He didn't mean to make it that big. But, there it is. A patch of ice that also serves as a doorway back to the mirror in Party Trailer.

"There you go." And as he looks at Rita, it's obvious that Strange is equally excited to see what she's going to do. "Cast the magic."

"That's it?" Turning snow into ice? Surely he could have done something more interesting.

But, whatever. It'll work. "All right... let's take a look." Rita steps up toward the ice, and, stopping before it, holds out a hand with her palm facing outward. She then makes a sweeping motion, conjuring a computer-like interface made of magic light. The display shows the technical details of the magic, though not necessarily in a way that's easy to comprehend. Below it is what looks like a keyboard for input.

Rita's eyes are immediately glued to the display as she studies the 'source code' of the magic.

Strange's wry little shithead smile is plainly telling Rita that no, it's not just it. There's more to that patch of ice than it just being a patch of ice. Though, as soon as he sees that interface, all his attention is going to there. Strange's technical knowledge is zero to none and his way of understanding magic can be a little rocky sometimes, so this is entirely new and entirely unexpected.

He moves so that he's behind Rita, able to get a better look at the display...which he still doesn't understand, but it's still super cool.

"Well, what does it tell you?"

"Give me a second."

Rita taps away at the keyboard, the display changing slightly in response, showing her the requested angles and data. Of course, to a layman, it doesn't look like much more than a series of lines drawn in gray-blue light with some vaguely bird-like imagery... Even Rita has to squint as she analyzes the data. She has the advantage of having observed Strange's magic before, and having read multiple books on the subject, but all things considered, this is the most sense his magic has ever made to her.

It takes less than a minute of her tapping away, humming thoughtfully, before the pieces come together and she realizes what kind of spell it really is.

"It's... a gate?"

It is indeed a gate. And Strange's face lights up as Rita makes that deduction. "I know a spell to create a pathway through the mirrors," he explains. "The spell in front of you is an adaptation of that."

He's still grinning like an idiot as he looks closer at Rita's display. Strange can't make heads or tails of that thing so the fact that Rita can somehow use it to identify his magic is quite impressive.

"Is your spell purely for identification purposes or can you manipulate the magic as well?"

Rita's lips twist in a knowing smirk. "That's a shame. You spoiled the surprise." Because hell yes she can manipulate it.

"Let's see... the current point of exit is..." She rapidly taps away at the keys, then looks out in the direction of the cabin. "About three hundred meters that way." Her gaze turns to Strange. "Your cabin?"

That can be changed...

Strange nods. He's still grinning as he watches Rita intently, looking over her shoulder to see if what she's typing makes any sense (it doesn't, but he's trying anyway).

"You're correct. Now, what do you plan on doing next?"

Because at least in Strange's mind, it's going to be super cool.

Rita's fingers haven't stopped moving all this time, but they do shortly after Strange asks his question.

"Plan to?" Rita faces him with a smug grin. "I've already done it. Take a look for yourself."

The easiest way to dramatically change a spell like this is, of course, to change the point of exit. One who passes through the ice will find themselves not in a cabin, but atop a frozen lake, surrounded by snowy mountains. It's where Rita went skating with Yuya the other day, and it's the first place to come to mind when she had to think of a location with a similarly smooth, mirror-like surface.

Strange walks out to the frozen patch of ground, carefully steps onto it, mutters a word under his breath then vanishes. There's a moment or two where nothing happens before he reappears on the patch of ice, grinning up a storm.

"That's amazing!" he exclaims, with a wide grin on his face. "And you were able to change the destination so easily. Rita, this is wonderful!"

He's nothing but all smiles as he just gushes about the magic and yammers on to Rita. Because it is wonderful. That magic is downright astounding.

Rita can't help but smile too. "Yeah... It helps that I've seen enough of your magic to be familiar with it, but with this technique, I should be able to analyze and manipulate all kinds of magic."

The potential applications are limitless, as far as Rita's concerned. She'll just need to keep up her studying...

"It'd be ideal if I could practice with a variety of magic objects and enchantments, both to hone this skill, and... well, frankly, for my own interest." Because it is fascinating to dissect and analyze magic in such a visual, technical way.

"I have a few magic objects from the Ringmaster that you can observe—though it's observation only. I don't want you changing the enchantment on any of them."

Especially considering that one of the magic objects is the creepy wife gem, something that Strange is still worryingly co-dependent about. Still, he's explaining this all in a light tone. Strange trusts Rita. If he tells her not to manipulate the magic on something, he has faith that she won't do so.

"All right," she agrees, sounding every bit like a teenager being reminded of her curfew. "I promise."

It would be nice to try altering some more enchantments, but ultimately, Rita won't argue. She'd never let anyone alter her blastia's configurations, after all. It's understandable for another mage to have similar attachments.

She takes a step away from the display, which vanishes on its own. It seems to only stay active while Rita's next to it. "Seen anything else of particular interest at this little get-together?" she goes on to ask. There's a lot that Rita wants to check out while people are openly displaying their skills... but she's open to recommendations. Strange probably knows what interests her.

As Rita steps away from the display, Strange gestures towards that icy patch of ground. With a wave of his hand, it vanishes, turning back into snow.

"There's a woman named Lavellan who should be here. Her world has spirits. We had a lovely conversation over the radio, you might be interested in talking to her." Though Strange has no idea what Lavellan looks like so he can't really point her out to Rita. As for other people...a wry smile plays on Strange's face as he gestures towards Five. "If you want someone to show off to, I'd recommend her. Five's world doesn't have any magic and she's always been eager to see me display mine."

Because Strange knows Rita. Talking with fellow mages is cool and fun and wonderful but what's also wonderful is showing off to someone who thinks you're cool to begin with.

"Lavellan, huh..." Rita seems to be committing the name to memory. A woman familiar with spirits and magic... Well, good. The magic-using population around here consists of far too many old men, as far as Rita's concerned.

"And... Five?" Strange gets a questioning look. "That's her name?" Considering the only other people Rita's met with numbers for names, she can't help but wonder... "Is she an android or something?"

"She's as human as both of us," Strange responds, with a little shrug. He at least thinks it's as odd as Rita does. "I believe that's just her name."

Which yes, it is an odd name, but there are so many odd people here with odd names that Strange is just rolling with it.

"Weird," is all she has to say about that. Definitely not the only weird name she's encountered around here, though.

"All right... maybe I'll try talking to them while we're all here." Not that Rita's out to show off to laymen, or anything...

... Well, just a little.

Strange knows she's out to show off to laymen, mostly because Strange knows that given the chance, he'll take the opportunity to show off to laymen.

"What about you? Who do you think I should talk to?" If he's going to give Rita hot goss about some of the carnival members and their various states of magic, Strange wants some in return. Besides, he's curious about Rita's opinion on certain people.

"Me?" Rita looks surprised to have the question turned around on her. After all, curious mage that she may be, she's not exactly a social butterfly. Most of the people she knows are people Strange has probably already met... except maybe...

"I guess there's that newcomer... the bald guy. Solas. He said he'd be here, right? I haven't seen his magic yet, but he seemed to consider himself an expert... Could be interesting to see if he's all talk or not."

Strange frowns a little. His impression of Solas...wasn't exactly the most positive. However, he trusts Rita and trusts her opinion so maybe, just maybe she could be right and this Solas fellow could back up his talk.

He doubts it, though. Considers himself an expert, yeah right.

"I'll keep an eye out for him. Though for our sakes, I hope he can back up his claims at least a little."
