[open] december will be magic again

Who: everyone!
When: the evening of D15
Where: A small meeting hall on the moon, close to the portal to the carnival
What: a whole bunch of show-offs meet up to show off their magic, people interested in magic come to learn about said magic, and other people show up to see if something inevitably gets set on fire. (aka mage club)
Warnings: none so far, will edit if needed.

The meeting hall is a large open space, with hardwood floors and a rustic decor. A few chairs and tables are scattered around, though there aren't enough for the amount of people who'll hopefully show up. Some food has been set out: mostly finger foods (tiny sandwiches, fruit, veggies & dip) though there are some savory options and plenty of home-baked cookies, courtesy of Rin. Drink wise, there's water, hot chocolate, hot tea, and a few bottles of wine because tipsy magic sounds like an awesome idea and this is what happens when the alcoholic makes the dinner menu. Aside from the food table and the few tables, there's not much of anything in the room: plenty of open space for showing off or getting out of the way of someone who wants to show off.

One of the doors of the meeting hall leads to the outside. There's a wider, 'backyard' sort of area with plenty of room for people to cast magic as large and impressive as they want. A fire pit stands outside also for warming your hands and other fire-based magic. Please don't set the building on fire.

This is all very informal. If pressed for details, Strange would have told anyone to just come whenever, stay as long as you like, and so on and so forth. The emphasis is on learning about each other's magic, displaying one's skills and talents, and helping anyone who wished to learn magic decide on a path for them to take.

Showing off is just a given.

( ooc: This is an open mingle log! Feel free to make your own top-levels & tag around! )

"Then it seems you are asking for redundancy," he quips, not at all off-put by the irritability. It was an attitude he could easily return. His attention is grabbed by the need for a 'cure,' something he would have to inquire about later. He wonders if it has anything to do with the more tumultuous times Cole warned him when speaking about.

"Is there a reason for your questioning?" Because if the man was seeking to document the mages here, he had more reason to be evasive.

"If you choose to be, redundant in your explanations then I clearly can't help but request redundancy," Herbert shoots back. "If, instead, you make the effort to, actually provide facts then my line of questioning will be worthwhile after all-- it depends on you." Is it like. A requirement? For practitioners of magic to be as unscientific and cagey as Strange? It can't be: there's Mordion, after all.

"I am a scientist, and I intend to learn this new branch. Nobody has yet discovered it in my universe so I will be the first--it has great utility in my field of reanimation."

"It depends on me as much as it depends on the questions being asked." Herbert is the one trying to navigate this interview and Solas can make it as difficult as he desires. This may, unfortunately, become a common theme once they meet in their regular duties.

"Reanimation? Of the dead?" he asks, brow raised. "You would be a practitioner of necromancy then."

"I might agree if you'd made any attempt to answer my questions instead of pointedly avoiding answering a single one--I would prefer to know now if you intend to continue, wasting my time...?" His voice is louder now, tense. Herbert hates his time being wasted.

His work, however, he will gladly talk about, basically forever. "If it helps you to conceive of my work's purpose by referring to it using the terminology of your field then, yes. Necromancy. I don't use magic or ritual in my work, however, I use chemistry. I have raised the dead with my reagent and I continue to improve it even now-- so yes, perhaps...one day I may incorporate magic."

Solas finally gets a dismissive look from down Herbert's nose...which is difficult given their height difference. "If all practitioners of magic continue to be as unaccomodating and recalcitrant as Strange and yourself however.....perhaps not."

"That would be your loss, not ours," he replies without missing a beat. If the man wished to refuse magic on the basis of disliking others that practiced it, that would be his challenge. Solas doubts the human would have much magic in him to start with if it hadn't manifested already.

But he is curious about what Herbert speaks of. It is enough to keep him there and listening.

"I know the theory and thought behind necromancy, but it is not an art I have practiced." Much, anyway. Herbert's bit of information at least has Solas answering some of his questions with, "My specialties are in restoration and ice though I have practiced in a great deal more. Magic is my work and I have kept an open mind in learning it and its uses."

Solas gets a particularly dead-eyed stare for that first comment. It isn't that he'd avoid it spitefully, it's that Strange avoids scientific explanations and Solas seems to be avoiding any explanations at all. Completely useless.

"There are no libraries of magic or any other sciences in this Carnival," he says finally, "I am relying on the knowledge base of others to expand my own--draconic hoarding of information benefits no one." He breathes out slowly and continues. "What manner of restoration do you mean?" He'll. Just ask that before trying one last time to find out how magic actually happens for Solas.

"Strange that the fae do not keep such records somewhere." The elves of his time had Vir Dirthana, a large library, along with personal collections scattered about. Even modern Thedas kept books and research done on magic. Did the fae not do the same?

"I am a healer and work in protective magic. I can assist with physical wounds," he explains. If someone wanted help with a cold or a cough they would be out of luck. "From what I have heard, that is a skill the carnival has been in need of."

"I assume they must: this fae in particular does not -- or doesn't make it available to her employees at least." Though Solas raises a good point... Herbert supposes it would be too much to hope the Carnival travel to some giant library of science next. The less he's forced to rely on the 'good will' of others, the better.

...wait, really? Herbert isn't sure how he feels about this. Solas doesn't seem the sort to listen to anyone else and Herbert had honestly sort of enjoyed leading the medical department by default.

"Have you too been assigned as a Medic?" he asks, vaguely hoping that Solas is just another like Ginko (if less agreeable), someone with talent and experience assigned elsewhere.
lonesomewanderer: (expressionless goddamn)

The fae might, depending on how their records are kept. He wonders if it's similar to how the elves of Arlathan kept theirs, a strange mixture of written and magical impressions of scenes, emotions, memories all stored and bound. With any luck, he'd be able to find such records if they traveled to another fae's realm because he would certainly be seeking them out.

The question has him watching Herbert more sharply. He notices the wording which means he's stumbled upon one of his coworkers.

"I have, yes. I did not take you for a healer," he says with a raised brow. As if Solas is one to talk about bedside manner.
