just gotta ignite the light and let it shine

Who: Everyone who's stupid enough to show up for this, because legal drinking ages are for people from a different century/planet.
When: Afternoon/Evening, Day 30
Where: Lakeshore
What: Local Carnival workers get wasted and set off fireworks by the lake.
Warnings: Carnival shenanigans, ie. booze, drugs, and people getting set on fire probably. Put any tag-specific warnings in your headers!

So, Wismuth happened.

Lambert's pretty willing to bet a good chunk of the Carnival is pretty happy to act like Wismuth didn't happen, but he also doesn't really care about what sorrows people are drowning or not tonight: he knows he needed this drink, and after he'd slept off the immediate exhaustion that came with running around Wismuth for nearly two weeks with the power of Creation more or less constantly burning through him, he's ready to something, anything to feel like himself again.

Fast-forward to the lakeshore. There's a huge bonfire going, a box of assorted fireworks that's been 'liberated' from wherever the hell engineering keeps their supplies, and probably a crate of wine that's going to disappear sooner rather than later. Anything else, someone's going to have to bring themselves.

[ ooc: This is a mingle log! Bring your own entertainment, food, questionable substances etc. ]

Oh, Lavellan! [Syrlya turns around and offers her a smile. It is relieving to see her less... despondent about everything after the fact.]

Luckily for the carnival, there's no one here I hold ill will toward. [And he also probably wouldn't get away with blasting someone with a firework, besides.

He turns the firework over in his hands, trying to gauge if there's a canister holding it or not. Does that make it safe to fire from his hands?]
I have never actually given one much attention up close... have you used them before?

Lucky indeed. ( Lavellan gives him a smile at that. Everyone had, at least, been understanding about events that had recently transpired. Although Syrlya might be willing to cut her some slack because she simply hadn't tried to seriously injure him.

She ambles closer, trying to peer at it from a slightly closer distance to see if she can tell. His question makes her pause, and she makes a vague motion with one hand.
) Sort of; I'm not sure how similar they are to these. They didn't make quite the impression that these do. Explosive powders aren't common in Thedas.

[That is to her benefit. He looks up from the firework to Lavellan and raises a brow.] Are they not? It's very common in Tyria as ammunition. I believe the Charr were the leaders of that particular development.

[He shakes the firework, briefly, before realizing that's maybe not a bad idea.] We have these as well, but I have only seen them at a distance.

The qunari have something they call gaatlok, but they guard the secrets of its creation jealously. The other alternative is something made from a substance called lyrium. But that is far more dangerous, and expensive, as it has other more lucrative uses.

( Like selling it to Circles. Lavellan would be the first to admit that she didn't follow the lyrium trade as close as she she should have, but getting her hands on any of it would have been near impossible as a Dalish elf. And by the point when she could get it, it was simply part of the normal requisitions for the mages in the Inquisition itself.

Lavellan frowns, scowling at the dirt before she catches something she thinks is meant to at least hold something like the firework he's holding.
) If you're wanting a closer look, I think we could figure that out ourselves. ( She says, holding the part up. )

I think that the powder used in guns, bombs and the like is made specifically for it... [But he's no engineer, and although some of the weapons developers in the Pact tried to explain it to him... well, without a background in mechanics there was only so much he understood.

Especially from the Asura.

He perks up when Lavellan holds up the stand.]
Wonderful! Then I believe all we need is a match... unless you have something else capable of lighting it.

[He remembers Foster telling him about it being common, at least for his world, to light candles with magic. For all he knows, Thedas is the same.]

Guns?

( Guess who doesn't have that particular invention yet? It's Thedas. Thankfully, because no one needs anyone running around with guns, if she ever had context for that particular invention. Varric's crossbow is bad enough. At his question she grins, and gestures for him to take the stand -- if and when he does, she conjures up a small handful of flames. )

Not my speciality, but we're not relegated to one school of magic over another.

Mechanical weapons. Er--[He does a finger gun gesture as if that... explains anything, in place of actual words.

He does indeed take the stand when offered, kneeling to set the firework up within it as upright as possible.]
Some of the carnival games use toy versions of them.

[In case she wants a better example. Of course, he could always create an illusion if his hands weren't occupied with explosives. Maybe later. For now, he looks up and gives her a pleased expression at the fireball.] Excellent! Magic is Tyria is not so easily done at such a small scale, so we often stick to our specialties.

[No point relearning a whole profession when you could extend the limits of your current one, anyway. He sweeps his robe back as he moves to give her space to light it.]

[personal profile] dirthena 2018-03-27 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! Yes, I remember seeing those now. Like a cross between what the qunari use and a crossbow. ( Which is the best way she can explain it. Still, she grins down at him at the exclamation, waiting for him to signal that he's set it up before she bends down closer, holding her palm up to the fuse.

She could move backwards, but Lavellan feels like showing off and using her magic once again, after so long using what the Void had given her. She calls up a barrier for the both of them, and it settles over them in a shimmering blue light.
)

Theoretically, there's no limits to what one can do with magic in Thedas. It's a reshaping of reality by our will -- nothing is too big or, in this case, too small. I knew a man who could turn living beings to stone without blinking, if he so chose.

( Thanks for that one, Solas. )

[Syrlya is, momentarily, distracted by the barriers around them that he forgets about the firework entirely to try and inspect it.] Really? Did he permanently change their state of being, or--?

[Of course, before he can continue that thought the firework goes off. Syrlya's attention snaps too it as it suddenly shoots up and off... and very narrowly misses a tree. At least it was a small firework.]
dirthena: (so listen to me mf)

[personal profile] dirthena 2018-03-30 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
( The firework cuts off most of what Lavellan was going to continue saying, and she grins wildly as it explodes. Missing a tree, thankfully, but the explosion is still noteworthy. )

Aiming might need some improvement. ( She says, with a small smile. As for the statues, well. ) I-- don't know. They were trying to kill me, too, so finding out if it wore off wasn't exactly a priority.

( Whoops. )

... Those turned to stone were trying to kill you, or the one doing the turning? [Just to be clear on the matter, although assuming they aren't here it probably doesn't change much.]
dirthena: (cass please love me)

[personal profile] dirthena 2018-04-02 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Turned to stone. The one who was doing the turning has no desire to kill me personally. ( a pause, and she considers this for a moment. ) Unless I force his hand, for I have no doubt I am an acceptable loss as a byproduct of his plans.

( also about that... 'if they aren't here' thing. )

[An alliance temporary and born of pragmatism, then? He can understand that, and nods once.] Was it related to your task with your Inquisition? Or did you often find unrelated trouble?
dirthena: (i think i did okay)

[personal profile] dirthena 2018-04-02 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
An unforeseen complication of the Inquisition existing, I think. An enemy of the countries I worked in and with decided to seize upon an opportunity that the Inquisition provided. The third party... took poorly to this. Most likely because the Qunari offend him. ( and solas can be a petty asshole when he wants to be. ) But trouble tended to find me regardless.

( partly because they tended to send her out to deal with it as the only qualified person, and also because her luck is just that bad. )
