⇨ SPACE OLYMPICS

Who: Everyone!
When: Day 30 - Day 44
Where: The carnival, Zargon, and Olympic Spaceship
What: Things return back to normal as the carnival performs for aliens of all sorts at the Space Olympics. Or at least, as normal as it can be when you've got an underfunded and falling-apart spaceship hovering over a deadly planet.
Warnings: Sports and people's inability to do them.

REACH FOR THE STARS

At first glance, the Space Olympics seem marvelous. Aliens from all over the universe, of all shapes and sizes have joined together in an intergalactic display of teamwork and sportmanship. What could be more inspiring than that? It's only when you hang around for a bit that you notice things aren't exactly in tip-top shape.

► OLYMPIC SPACESHIP: This is where most of the events are held. It's a massive spaceship spanning hundreds of miles and consisting of multiple floors. Teleportation discs and space public transport can take you anywhere on the spaceship in a blink of an eye. It has almost every amenity an athlete can think of: multiple gyms, practice arenas, saunas, etc. Likewise, there are plenty of things for civilians and spectators: merchandise stands, shopping malls, grocery stores, and television screens everywhere so people can watch the event. Shuttles to and from Zargon arrive on a regular basis.

► ZARGON: Facility wise, Zargon itself is less impressive than Olympic Spaceship. The carnival and the athlete's village comprise most of the habitable areas. Both are concealed underneath a large biodome, the main thing making the area livable. Enterprising Zargonites have set up stands that let people explore outside of the biodome. Rent a spacesuit and you too can enjoy Zargon's natural wonders, such as the distant red plateaus and the stunning solar winds. Just try and stay away from the toxic mold, naturally occurring pockets of hallucinogenic gas, and ten foot tall Zargon Death Flytrap.

► 1980s TRAINING MONTAGE: Since carnival members can only attempt to medal in one event, why not try different sports to see what that one event is? There's equipment for all sorts of sports: gymnastics, swimming, biathalon, snowboarding, etc. They've even somehow brought space horses up here for Space Dressage! There's also equipment for sports that carnival members might not have even known existed: Space Gymkata, Space Pooh Sticks, Space Limbo Skating, etc. The sky's the limit!

► A BIT OF A BUDGET SNAFU: The Space Olympics is kind of falling apart. After performance week, the carnival is drafted to help out and keep the Space Olympics running as smoothly as possible. This means fixing buildings, breaking up fights, helping in the kitchen, trying to sell merch, etc. If there's a feasible problem, the carnival members will be drafted to help fix it. The biggest problem of all is the multiple mechanical failures: artificial gravity stops working, temperatures on the ship rapidly shift from hot to cold, and the snow machines for Space Slopestyle won't turn off.

► PERFORMANCE: Performance week will start early this stop, to try and get everyone back into the swing of things after the chaos of Wismuth. Athletes from the village roam the carnival, taking in the sights and sounds. A lot of them haven't ever seen anything like the magic of the carnival and it's workers and will proceed to ask question after question about how all of this works: turns out that sci-fi and fantasy don't crossover as much as one would think. Still, don't be alarmed when you turn the corner and there's a Hutt trying his hand at test your strength.

Hopeless and miserable, alone and in pain... you assume those are the same thing, that because it's bad it can be fixed. Right?

[Foster doesn't get any closer--he wasn't even trying to back Yuya up, but now his body language turns aloof and he locks eyes with Yuya mercilessly.

Speaking of eyes, they're attracting a few of those now, along with sundry other sensory organs--even with most of the attention on Gon as the surprise winner, Yuya's retreat into the wall isn't subtle.
]

But it's not enough for there to be a solution. Because the solution has to make you happy, too.

No, that's not it! [Yuya shakes his head emphatically.] I mean--of course I want to help something if it's bad, but it's not about me!

[He thought he and Foster felt the same about CY-Ren's fate, but... maybe he had misunderstood. Maybe Foster's intention wasn't her mercy after all.] You don't think what CY-Ren wanted was to stay that way, do you?

Depends on when you asked her.

[Blunt.]

But you never asked. You don't ask! Your justification is how you feel. Just like at the Ritual. You don't think about what comes after; the immediacy of the problem for you is all that matters.

[Yuya opens his mouth to speak... but all that ultimately comes out is a pitiful croak, before he snaps his jaw shut and his gaze floats away from Foster to the empty space over his shoulder.

Realistically, there wasn't any chance to ask CY-Ren, and the influence of the Void a deeper corruption than just being sad or unsatisfied with her music. He'd wanted to, of course, but she wasn't going to open herself up to it in that state. She'll probably be happier with a chance to actually live her life, instead of being driven by a force of destruction that exploited her weakest moment.

But Foster's words still cut at his insecurity, so instead of defending it he just goes quiet and nervous, his hands wringing together.]

[Realistically, that's true. It's also true that Yuya balked at a strategy that might have made her too sad, implying in the process that making her temporarily sad for the sake of self-reflection was worse than condemning her to the existence he claimed to have such a problem with.

Just like he balked at the solution that would have relieved Foster of his own agony and granted everyone else their return because he personally found Foster's death objectionable--thereby condemning Foster to months of increased and continued suffering for no better reason than his own need to believe that 'hope' exists. But as with CY-Ren, he's not content with even that.
]

It's not enough for others' needs to adhere to yours. You have to make it so that it's in their best interests to feel the way you want them to. But that's okay, because you're helping. Right? There's no such thing as hopelessness if you try hard enough! It's fine for people to suffer when the alternative makes you unhappy!

[Yuya flinches, squeezing his eyes shut as Foster goes on. But he hasn't stopped listening, and towards the end he's shaking his head fervently before he snaps out with barely any time for Foster to get out the last word.]

No! That's not right, that's not it! [It wavers as he says it, tail lashing, and he snaps his attention up.] You're wrong! You're wrong, so stop--stop accusing me!

[He clenches his fists, sucking in a sharp breath but sparing little time to think about his defense--just that if he's come so far to better himself and be stronger, and how can he falter without even bothering to affirm it?] If CY-Ren didn't want help, then it wouldn't have worked! Because I can't change anyone's mind if they don't want to, or if they don't accept it. But if there's someone I can help, that can smile and be in less pain because of me...

[That's what he does it for.] Noa and I reached out to her in a way we thought would work, and it did! Are you mad because we didn't do it exactly how you wanted?!
criticallyfucked: (Blink if you can hear me)

[personal profile] criticallyfucked 2018-04-09 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
No.

[A pause.]

She's lucky.

[Lucky she didn't see through him. Lucky she could be helped, that she wanted it, that Noa's desires were sincere enough, that Creation could move through people. Yuya has no idea, but... Foster still feels it. His form was restored, but a little bead of that light never left.]

But this isn't about her.

Then what? [He gestures wide, obvious frustration bleeding through.] What is it about, Foster?! That I won't use you or call you trash? That I was the catalyst so we could get out of Portland? You don't want me to help you, so what do you want?

[If they just disagree on their worldview, then... it's a bit of a standstill. He's not sure if Foster wants to actually change his mind, or can't put the disagreement down, or if he's trying to get something out of Yuya. It could be any of those, for as much as he knows about Foster's motivations.]

[personal profile] criticallyfucked 2018-04-09 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
What I wanted is no longer possible.

[It's like he's having a totally different conversation, except for the contents--the tone, his body language, all of it is detached from Yuya in a strangely elevated way, like he's operating on a different plane.

Maybe he is.

Augh! [Yuya throws his hands up in the air. How does he respond to that? It doesn't narrow down exactly what Foster's come to him about, or why he's mad at Yuya. He can only assume it's the same point they've argued before, about using Foster and treating him like he's subhuman.]

Fine, you don't actually want anything from me! Then I don't know what I'm supposed to do, Foster. Did you come just to yell at me?
criticallyfucked: (Hold onto your humility)

[personal profile] criticallyfucked 2018-04-09 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[Foster is just as frustrated, honestly. He has, from his point of view, been explicitly, exhaustingly clear. But it's like Yuya has chosen to focus on quite literally every point but the correct one. He can't even tell if it's on purpose, or if Yuya is that genuinely clueless.

But maybe that's the problem. He's tired of trying, honestly. Not just with Yuya, which is a small thing in the grand scheme, but in general. He's been trying... constantly, in every avenue, somehow, and he doesn't know when that even started. But there's a point where even he has to get the message.

And the message is, trying doesn't matter. Which he knew, at some point; he's sure he knew that. The problem is he forgot it, and that...

Well. The result is him standing in a hallway, trying fruitlessly to explain the obvious to a teenager in a situation where only he could fail. But he has, again. And that's... fine. That should be fine with him. It's fine for him to fail!

Yuya didn't fail, and that... really, what does his opinion matter? It doesn't!

Honestly... he's the stupid one, always. He really should learn that better.

He regards Yuya coolly--or maybe less coolly, just tiredly, or maybe it's not even that, maybe it's just impossible to tell, without a mouth--and turns away.

With the crowd as it is, it's not even seconds before he's gone.

[Yuya just continues to have a silent stare off, face twisted with frustration but without animosity.

He blinks rapidly when Foster turns away, posture deflating a little. Again, his question doesn't get any sort of answer and Yuya's just left confused. Even just a yes or no would have sufficed.

He juts out his lower lip.]
Fine, or you can just walk away again.

[He's grumbling mostly to himself, turning to walk the opposite direction back to the stadium. Maybe Gongenzaka is done with all his interviews and they can celebrate his medal.]
