⇨ SPACE OLYMPICS

Who: Everyone!
When: Day 30 - Day 44
Where: The carnival, Zargon, and Olympic Spaceship
What: Things return back to normal as the carnival performs for aliens of all sorts at the Space Olympics. Or at least, as normal as it can be when you've got an underfunded and falling-apart spaceship hovering over a deadly planet.
Warnings: Sports and people's inability to do them.

REACH FOR THE STARS

At first glance, the Space Olympics seem marvelous. Aliens from all over the universe, of all shapes and sizes have joined together in an intergalactic display of teamwork and sportmanship. What could be more inspiring than that? It's only when you hang around for a bit that you notice things aren't exactly in tip-top shape.

► OLYMPIC SPACESHIP: This is where most of the events are held. It's a massive spaceship spanning hundreds of miles and consisting of multiple floors. Teleportation discs and space public transport can take you anywhere on the spaceship in a blink of an eye. It has almost every amenity an athlete can think of: multiple gyms, practice arenas, saunas, etc. Likewise, there are plenty of things for civilians and spectators: merchandise stands, shopping malls, grocery stores, and television screens everywhere so people can watch the event. Shuttles to and from Zargon arrive on a regular basis.

► ZARGON: Facility wise, Zargon itself is less impressive than Olympic Spaceship. The carnival and the athlete's village comprise most of the habitable areas. Both are concealed underneath a large biodome, the main thing making the area livable. Enterprising Zargonites have set up stands that let people explore outside of the biodome. Rent a spacesuit and you too can enjoy Zargon's natural wonders, such as the distant red plateaus and the stunning solar winds. Just try and stay away from the toxic mold, naturally occurring pockets of hallucinogenic gas, and ten foot tall Zargon Death Flytrap.

► 1980s TRAINING MONTAGE: Since carnival members can only attempt to medal in one event, why not try different sports to see what that one event is? There's equipment for all sorts of sports: gymnastics, swimming, biathalon, snowboarding, etc. They've even somehow brought space horses up here for Space Dressage! There's also equipment for sports that carnival members might not have even known existed: Space Gymkata, Space Pooh Sticks, Space Limbo Skating, etc. The sky's the limit!

► A BIT OF A BUDGET SNAFU: The Space Olympics is kind of falling apart. After performance week, the carnival is drafted to help out and keep the Space Olympics running as smoothly as possible. This means fixing buildings, breaking up fights, helping in the kitchen, trying to sell merch, etc. If there's a feasible problem, the carnival members will be drafted to help fix it. The biggest problem of all is the multiple mechanical failures: artificial gravity stops working, temperatures on the ship rapidly shift from hot to cold, and the snow machines for Space Slopestyle won't turn off.

► PERFORMANCE: Performance week will start early this stop, to try and get everyone back into the swing of things after the chaos of Wismuth. Athletes from the village roam the carnival, taking in the sights and sounds. A lot of them haven't ever seen anything like the magic of the carnival and it's workers and will proceed to ask question after question about how all of this works: turns out that sci-fi and fantasy don't crossover as much as one would think. Still, don't be alarmed when you turn the corner and there's a Hutt trying his hand at test your strength.

[ Jonathan Strange, a British white guy pushing forty from the 1810s, has really no idea what sort of honorific or other word Reira might use with him instead. ]

I suppose that depends on what that word is?

[ He's damn confused. Does she think he's a 'sir'? He doesn't have a title, he's nowhere close to a 'sir' or a 'lord' or anything like that. ]
soft_focus: (Extra32)

she's not gonna get it in this thread but I figure she can ask one of the cast later SO

[personal profile] soft_focus 2018-04-17 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
[She's going to be honest, Strange-] ....I don't know.

[Welp.] ....Mister feels really 'serious' though.

[At least you know That, now.] Umn...but you're too old to be a 'niisan'...that's more like Yuuya, or Yuugo... [She mutters, sipping some tea.] ...I have to remember what the right word was. It's like 'mister', but it's not serious.

[You're too fun to be a Mister!]
kingsroads: (this won't end well)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-04-17 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
[ Yeah, Strange has absolutely no goddamn clue what Reira's talking about. He gives her a blank look before deciding that this is probably some sort of kid thing and he shouldn't really bother. A word like 'mister' but not serious, there's not a thing like that to begin with. ]

I don't mind it, [ Strange remarks, with a little shrug. ] At least where I'm from, I would call anybody of my sex and age 'mister', no matter if they were serious or not.
soft_focus: (O_O)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2018-04-17 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
[To this, she must point something out Immediately, with the flattest stare she can muster.] ...Childermass is a 'Mister'.

...You're definitely not like Childermass.

[This is, presumably, meant to be a compliment. As it is.] ...I guess since you're not little though, that makes sense.

I'll just ask Yuuya about what I should say. He'll know, probably!
kingsroads: (really? well okay then)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-04-17 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
[ Wait, what? Strange can't help but frown a little as that damn confused expression fades to one slightly confused. ]

Of course I'm like Childermass, [ he grumbles slightly. ] We're both magicians. [ Maybe not in personality, but ideals and interests? They're more alike than one would expect. ]

Anyway, asking Yuya would be the best bet. I'm certain he'll have an idea of what you're looking for.

[ at least, he hopes Yuya's got an idea of what Reira's looking for. ]

[personal profile] soft_focus 2018-04-17 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
[There's a head tilt.] ...Not that part.

The part where you're okay with feeling happy, and where you smile more, and let me come over for tea and scrying. That part.

[That speaks of some unfortunate but interesting assumptions on Reira's part regarding Childermass and emotions, but oh well.

She's definitely in agreement on Yuuya.
] Yeah! It was his language, first.
kingsroads: (smirky asshole)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-04-17 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Strange can't help it: he smiles a little at Reira's assumptions on Childermass. The part where he's okay with feeling happy? He knows that there are plenty of things that make Childermass feel happy—they simply have to be wrung out of him like water from a cloth.

Still, that probably wouldn't do for Childermass's deliberately grumpy image. So, he's keeping quiet a bit about that (though he'll probably mention it to Childermass later, just to tease the man.)
]

I will grant you this much: he does need to smile more. Though, I don't think Childermass would let anyone come over for tea and scrying.

[personal profile] soft_focus 2018-04-17 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[On the one hand, that wasn't quite what she had meant. But then on the other, her tendency to end up on entirely different lines of thought from everyone else may well reveal that For Her.

As she nods, she continues to slowly drink her tea. She's bound to run out eventually.
] Mnn. There has to be things that make him happy, but I've never heard him be happy-so he has to be doing that in secret, probably.

[Reira that isn't how feelings work. (A shame, though, as she's apparently determined that he's not a grumpy man at all)] ...I guess if he didn't have secret feelings and quiet feelings, instead of loud ones like most people, he wouldn't be good at being serious though...

[This is likely getting more and more confusing, not that she pays any notice.] ...Is keeping secrets why he doesn't have people share tea?

...he can't not like anyone. I know that. He gave me books, you don't give people books if you don't like them at all.
kingsroads: (your sea beacons suck)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-04-18 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
[ Right, Strange has no idea what Reira's talking about. Loud feelings? Quiet feelings? He's just going to smile and nod because Strange knows that if he presses on this point and presses Reira on what she's talking about, he'll just end up even more confused. Loud feelings are a thing, okay, he can work with this. ]

He likes people, [ Strange explains, with a shrug. After all, Childermass likes him and Lambert (for some reason.) ] But people can show that they like someone in different ways. Some people show their friendship by inviting others over for tea, some people show their friendship by watching from afar. I'm sure you show someone that you're friends with them in a different way than both Childermass and I do.

[ partly because Strange enjoys getting drunk with his friends and nope, not getting the seven year old hammered. ]

[One day someone is going to gesture to the child and say 'she's an empath', and a lot of things are probably going to make sense.

She has to think about that, anyway-the idea of doing stuff with friends.
] ....I don't know, [she eventually says, blinking as she stares at her tea.] ...I know it's different, I mean.

...I just don't know what 'I' would do. ...Having friends is a new thing-I was only starting to learn what a friend was, at home. [It's a tricky question, she thinks, the idea of what SHE would do to show her friendship...Hmm.]
kingsroads: (GIVE IT UP FOR MAGIC)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-04-18 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
[ Oddly enough? Reira not knowing how to have friends is the thing Strange is least confused by. He doesn't know her history, of course, but it's feasible that she simply had terrible parents or grew up somewhere without other children or grew up somewhere without children her age. If she were older, he'd be more worried, but as she's a child, that doesn't really surprise him in the slightest. ]

You gave me a drawing of that magician card for Solstice. Maybe the thing that you could do is play card games with your friends. Or, if they don't know how to play the card game, you all could draw or make artwork instead.

[ Strange has a vague knowledge of duel monsters pieced together from various conversations with Yuya. If Reira likes the cards enough to draw him a picture of one, then she must like them enough to play the card game, right? It's a halfway decent assumption. ]
soft_focus: (this seems like a BAAAAAAAAAD idea)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2018-04-18 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Hmnnn.... ...I guess the people I had to fight, with duel monsters, would like to play it as a game like Yuuya does, now... [That sounds a bit bad.

Oh Well! It's time to focus on what she's potentially more keen on.
] Um, but-! I only have pencils now..!! I ran out of the paint, and I couldn't make the card pictures the same way that they actually look...
kingsroads: (dude are you sure?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-04-18 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You can still draw with pencils, [ captain obvious points out. ] If you want something to color it with, I'm certain wardrobe or labor has something you can borrow.

[ Just steal some make-up or facepaint and color with that! Alternatively, there have to be some crayons or markers in the carnival somewhere. All they needed to do was explore enough to find them. ]
soft_focus: (-glugglug-)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2018-04-19 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[UM, STRANGE.]

...I was talking about the colours. [Honestly.] ...I haven't seen anyone with paints for paper here, but I guess I'll ask. [Actually, on that note.] ...I have to find some paper too.

[Kinda Key for drawing.]
kingsroads: (maybe staring makes it work)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-04-20 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Paper should be easy. Just bother someone in labor or explore until you find a supply closet. Alternatively, I suspect you can find a notebook or something on the spaceship itself.

[ give it up for merchandising. ]
soft_focus: (extra 08)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2018-04-22 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
....I'm in labor... [She says this less with judgement and more the implied assumption that bothering someone won't work. She's in the same department after all. But she can't really steeeeaaaallllll-

Oh.
] Mnh- they would have books, even though they're trying to do sports?
kingsroads: (dude are you sure?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-04-23 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen plenty of shirts, water bottles, and magnets with that odd bird thing on it. [ said odd bird thing is the space olympic mascot. ] It wouldn't surprise me if there was a notebook with that thing on it as well.

[ Strange may be from the 1810s but he's already grasping the concept of 'merchandising' and 'mascot branding.' ]
soft_focus: (.w.)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2018-04-23 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
[Well that's one of them, which is Enough for now.] Ohhhh...

...Mnh-! I'll get those then, [She determines.] ...Maybe, I can even find one for my pictures..!

[And with that, she's drained the last of her tea (finally).] ...Thank you, Strange.

[It's said with a bit more confidence, that.]
kingsroads: (small cheeky little smile)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2018-04-23 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
You're welcome, [ Strange says with a nod. He's finished with his cup as well and sets it down on the table. ]

I've got to clean up here but if you're willing, perhaps we can search for a notebook together? Later this evening, of course.

[ after all, at the rate Strange goes through paper, he should probably steal one for himself as well. ]
soft_focus: (.w.)

[personal profile] soft_focus 2018-04-26 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Umnh-! Yeah!!

Maybe lots of notebooks, [She decides, gently setting her cup back on the table before getting up.] ...You'll know the best notebooks too, probably.

[She's sure paper is just paper, but she does at least WONDER if that's not the case.]
