⇨ POLARIS 2.0

Who: Everyone!
When: Days 110 - 114
Where: Polaris
What: After a mysterious explosion shakes the station, the staff of Polaris struggle to maintain order while the test subjects fight for freedom with the aid of hidden allies. Productivity info is here.
Warnings: More graphic experimentation.

THEORY & CONCLUSION

At the midnight between Day 109 and Day 110, something happens. For most people, it won't be clear what - yet, they are shaken by it just the same. Violent tremors appear out of nowhere, rattling the entirety of the Polar station, violent enough to throw sleeping test subjects off their bunks. The source is unclear, but there is a sudden flurry of activity from staff as power flickers and is lost in various parts of the facility. Subjects, for the most part, will be left to their cells while they try to sort things out.

The next morning, the staff are late picking people up. It's more like 6:30AM than the usual 6AM when they arrive to take people to the farm, which is a bit of tardiness that is entirely without precedent. Any questions about the incident the previous night will be waved off with the explanation of 'technical difficulties' that have been 'resolved.'

► DELTA: The three new Deltas will be left in their cells for even longer, waiting to be picked up, instructed that they would be escorted elsewhere instead of to the farm. Around 6:45AM some unfamiliar technicians will arrive and tell them that they are here to begin their processing into Delta. They are led into a previously untouched section of the station, where they are invited into a somewhat more intimate medical room to be asked some cursory questions and given a check up. Then, their suits will be removed, and they will be provided with their new uniforms, which they can apply like normal clothes.

Delta life begins there. There will be a top level for the initial parts of their processing to be played out. Ultimately, however, they will end up being given a tour of the new Delta facilities, which amounts to a waterfront area that borders the new apartments they'll be staying in, as well a small supply shop where they can pick up an allotted amount of 'amenities' per day, based on their level of productivity and other achievements. This includes luxury items like food, pleasant smelling soaps, or other hygiene related tools. There are even small things like decorations or pictures of other places available, though they are fairly expensive.

The first day will mostly involve the processing, a tour, and some basic training regarding the new tools they will be using, such as the mandatory visors and basic computer access. The next day, observation shifts in the farm will start, as will participation in trials.

► FARMING: The Farm will continue as normal, though it seems like there are fewer staff observing it at the moment. The ones that are there seem a little bit more tense than usual. Power is still down in some places, but the Farm is thankfully still active. Sometimes the productivity turn-in scanners might be a bit glitchy, so try not to panic if it measures fewer points than you're due.

► TRIALS: Trials are continuing as projected, though with the most broad of experiments already under way, they may be more selective. If you have an idea for a trial you can be sure to share it with the staff, and they will take it under advisement! Any information you want to provide is encouraged, they will say, especially if it involves notable traits about you or your fellow test subjects - or perhaps behavioral patterns you've noticed. You might even be rewarded!

For a few moments, at least, it seems like Lambert doesn't immediately catch on, still working his way around. But the fact that Rita's lingering tells him she's up to something, and it's less because he knows what she's doing than just guesswork that he moves to the crate she's touched and --

His tailtip twitches, but his expression remains rigidly neutral. She might, with her visor, be able to pick up the brief spike in his heartrate. It's a lot to take in at once, but luckily for him, it's a process he's at least already experienced once, so it doesn't take long to acclimatize ... and he's also had the benefit of experiencing what it feels like to put his memories into an object held by Rita's magic. As he holds the crate to wash it out, he tries to sort his thoughts into order, putting them in a manner she can understand.

He tries to imbue the object with snapshots of scenes from his memory -- the technicians studying what he now recognizes as the map on her visor, blinking green and red. The incident at the Core, which then had to be cleared. Talk of reassignment, personnel unable to work -- a potential weakness in their surveillance, right now. The dissatisfied Gamma 238 -- dutiful, but not necessarily happy about it. The Mother of Invention's ranks don't hold absolute obedience, is that something they might be able to exploit?

Omicron, he emphasizes in his memory, finally. That must be Ignatius. He doesn't know how much they're letting Rita see or do, but she should keep an ear and eye out for it. Finished with this crate, he moves to stack it with the rest, then casually moves away from it to start on another one.

"There," he sneers, as he goes. "You can tell the Gammas I'm being a good boy and doing my job."

Rita frowns at Lambert, seemingly biting her lip to keep from making some sort of retort, as she normally would. She doesn't move, but continues her observations for a few more minutes. She can't exactly let him decide when it's time for her to leave, can she?

But after recording a few more notes, she decides it's time to move on to another subject. As she passes by the stack of crates, she brushes a hand against them, retrieving the information Lambert left for her. There's a brief pause, a moment taken to process what she's learned, and then she moves on, dispelling the enchantment just to make sure she leaves no traces that could be examined later.

She wishes they could have a proper conversation about all this... but that seems to be impossible. If she wants to share more, it seems best to do it another day, to avoid suspicion.

Rita may think that, but it seems Lambert isn't quite done with her yet. He frowns as she begins to turn to leave, and decides to risk it by calling out after her.

"Well, someone's changed. You already fit right in with the rest of them," he says, light and mocking. "Did you even feel the station get shaken up? Or were you too busy getting a light stuck in your chest then?" Hopefully, Rita gets the gist of the questions he's really asking here.

He's asking about that explosion... and her heart? Rita looks at him with a grimace, holding a hand over her chest before quickly pulling it away. It rests on her shoulder instead, where feathers poke out through the opening of her sleeveless uniform.

"That's not important," she says, trying to keep an even tone. She scratches at her feathered shoulder... Maybe she can get one loose and use that.

Too bad throwing anything at Rita is going to get him in more trouble than it's worth. Lambert's smirk remains solidly on his face, head cocked.

"Right. You're one of the guys who gets to call the shots, now, and I'm just a lowly Theta."

Rita doesn't respond to his taunting.

But as she fidgets, one feather does come loose from her shoulder, and she pinches its shaft and concentrates.

She concentrates on the trial she endured, the sickening memory of watching her heart carved out of her chest, the glowing red crystal inserted in its place... the feeling of her whole body burning up with heat and energy that could only come from Ignatius.

Then, she thinks to the explosion... How Ignatius mustered up enough power to cause it, but was unable to follow up on that action. It seemed like they bound him, perhaps altered his body, tore out his heart, suppressed him... but just before he was recaptured and rendered unresponsive, he entrusted some of his power to Rita. She can use her magic now... some of it.

She can't just hand this feather to him, though, so she flicks it away, letting it float to the ground. It's Lambert's job to clean up, after all. He should have an opportunity to get the message.

Pick it up Lambert does, with a huff and a roll of his eyes as he bends to the guise of sweeping up stray bits of produce away into the trash. His tail lashes once, eyes tightening, but that's all the reaction he gives as the recollection of pain hits him.

It'll take a moment to catch his breath, steady himself, before he looks up at Rita, eyes narrowed. He's missed a few days thanks to being bumped down to Theta, so his timeline is a little shaky, but he's not the one with the real memory issues...

"Well, since ince you're a Delta now, maybe you can answer something for me," he begins, idly shredding the feather between his fingertips before dropping it among the trash. Hopefully, that's good enough. "Some of my friends are missing a few memories. Techs said it was soul damage. Are there any trials that would cause that? Because obviously, they don't remember."
anti_nonsense: (Too bad.)

[personal profile] anti_nonsense 2018-10-23 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Rita looks away while Lambert picks it up, and doesn't look back even as he continues.

What is he talking about...? Friends, missing memories because of soul damage? It's not something Rita knows anything about, but maybe the visor's database has something. She starts looking through records on the few people she imagines Lambert would call his friends, but...

She tilts her head, uncertain. The information here is bare-bones, but none of it suggests anything about those symptoms.

“Childermass is even more of a featherbrain than he usually is,” Lambert is going on, in the face of a lack of a reaction from Rita. “He’s even forgotten how we got stuck here. Kind of lucky for him, huh?”
anti_nonsense: (Blastia is people?)

Childermass? Rita checks his file again. He did have a trial two days ago, but it doesn't seem like it should have affected his memory. She even saw him that day, and he was...

... Something clicks.

Rita tenses, her mouth hanging open for a moment as she considers the possibility that just entered her mind. Did he... no, it can't be. But it makes sense... She quickly regains her composure, scratching again at her shoulder. This time, she'll imbue a feather with what she can recall of that conversation.

Rita, speaking of Ignatius as she murmurs, "If he had more power..."

Childermass, suggesting, "I wonder... if a faerie can pull power from whoever they own. That might be worth trying." There's a blur, before he can be heard adding, "If you're still recovering from the trial, I can try myself."

"I think... it has to be me," says Rita, later adding, "I'm not saying you shouldn't try."

"I'll see what I can do," is Childermass's answer, and the last words to be heard in this memory.

It's her fault. Or rather... it's mostly his own fault, but it's partly hers. She feels kind of bad about it, and some of that feeling ends up imprinted in the feather along with the memory. She hesitates, shakes her head... then turns to start walking away again, leaving the feather to fall behind her.
whattaprick: (go figure)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2018-10-26 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
And just like before, Lambert bends down to pick it up... but this time, a distinctively choked sound follows. Lambert crushes the feather in his fingers, shaking his head.

“That fucking idiot...”

But this time, at least, he won’t chase after Rita again. That’ll have to wait until they get the chance to ‘speak’ again.
