⇨ THE MASQUERADE

Who: Everyone! Attendance is mandatory.
When: Late Day 65
Where: The Celebration
What: The Masquerade arrives, and so does the carnival's enemies. For more info, check out the Draculas 101.
Warnings: Further party hell. Also, vampire violence, mind control, etc.

THE HOST & THE HORDE

The time of the Masquerade arrives. You've been given free reign of the place up till now, but a few hours before the party commences the Host will inform you that your presence will be required, and will assist you (forcibly, if need be) to sort out any last minute costuming concerns you might have if you've left it until now. When masks and outfits are sorted, you'll be left to your own devices until you are summoned on the evening of Day 65.

The Masquerade will start off normally - relative to everything else in this place, at least. Everyone in the Celebration will be called in for this event, centered in a grand hall with side rooms offered to those that need them for whatever reasons might come up. The food and drink is especially ambrosia-esque this evening, and the music will stir your soul, even if you're not usually a music person. Enjoy it if you can - the peace won't last.

► MASKS: Though the masks seemed only mundane before, once within the Masquerade atmosphere, they will magically begin obscuring people's identities beyond what a normal mask should be able to do. When a person is wearing one, it would be supernaturally difficult to figure out who they are - maybe you forget what their voice should sound like, or maybe the other details escape you. Of course, it's possible to figure out if you look for it, based on general shapes and personality traits, but unless you know someone well it could be a challenge. Of course, you can just take your mask off and remove the enchantment entirely - though the Host will hassle you if they notice you going without. Stop ruining the party!

► TEMPTATION: Though it's felt easy to be whisked away by the draw of pleasure and luxury during the rest of the week, that feeling will seem to come to a head at the actual party. If you are aware of what needs to be resisted then it's possible to fight back and ignore it, but more than ever it feels all too easy to just dance your life away. Nobody seems to be dying from it, at least, or 'burning out' any faster as a result - it's mostly just extremely distracting from other concerns. Like vampires, for instance.

VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE
It's during the latter half of the party that things will start to go bad. Though it will go unseen by the carnival, the Masquerade has gained an additional set of guests - the vampire's of the demon lord that has been chasing them for the last several months. The Host doesn't discriminate, and anyone is welcome to attend the Celebration, provided they don't start a fight.

Right. About that.

► THE KINDRED: The vampires don't like to play fair, which means that they are going to be attacking with stealth and trickery - taking advantage of the way that the party has dulled the alertness of many of the carnival's workers. They'll be using that lack of inhibition to lure individuals into places they can be attacked or turned in private - their primary goals are to capture the Supervisors and to turn as many of the Ringmaster's workers as possible before escaping back to their dimension. Some of their targets will be gone before anyone has a chance to notice.

Remembering that they will be avoiding big public confrontations, so if anyone starts one of those it will probably by the carnival members striking back. This is going to wear on the Host's patience extremely quickly.

► COLD IRON: Oh, right, and they are definitely bringing iron weapons - as pure as they could get. They'll have things like iron collars or shackles to try to trap people with, as well as iron daggers and guns with iron bullets. They'll have to be on the down low with, but they are going to exploit that weakeness as much as possible. Those that have only been in the carnival a few months will mostly just feel discomfort at the touch of it - as if they are touching something that is slightly too hot or too cold. Veterans that have been around for years will find its touch to be burningly cold - the type of temperature that would threaten to destroy flesh after prolonged contact. Those that have been here for up to three years will take it the worst. See the Transformations page for more details!

► TURNING THE TABLES: Being turned is a mixture of pleasure and pain, and is often hard for mortals to mentally reconcile as it happens to them. Being drained by these vampires is simultaneously impossibly satisfying and extremely terrifying - once they've started in on your, the way it overwhelms your mind and body can make it nearly impossible to stop them without help. Once you are dead or dying, they will feed you their blood - at which point your body will go through a painful transformation as the demon spirit takes its place inside of you and your dead body is violently resurrected.

As soon as you wake up, freshly changed, the bloodlust will set it - it will be extremely hard to control, and at first all you will think about is wanting to sate that hunger. Combined with your sire having direct control if your mind through your blood connection, new vampires will be mostly incapable of doing anything but following the whims of the rest of the vampire pack and seeking nourishment. This blood lust will begin to fade after they've fed. Killing isn't necessary to feed, but it can be hard to stop yourself, as a neonate vampire.

► CLOSING TIME: Before the party is officially over, the Host will have had enough. Before you can pursue all of the vampires or take back the people they've stolen, the lot of them will have escaped back to their dimension, and the Host will have kicked the entire carnival out for participating in so much violence. If you want to make any final moves before you go, this is the time.

You look like shit. [ Is what Lambert says by way of greeting, looking Strange over head to toe, and yeah buddy he doesn't miss that manic edge to your grin there. ] But thanks for the distraction.

[ Like Strange, he's also scanning the corridor for more signs of vampire attacks, but -- ]

Why aren't you in the dining hall?
kingsroads: (maybe don't DO that?!)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-02 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Strange can't help but shrug at that because eh, Lambert's right, he probably does look godawful, no surprises there. But at Lambert's question, Strange can't help but roll his eyes. ]

I'm a nightrunner, [ said in a tone of DUH, LAMBERT. ] I'm not going to the dining hall while there are still people here who need my help.

[ And that's said as he gives Lambert a Look. Because you count as people buddy and, at least in that situation, Lambert definitely needed his help. Just ignore the fact that Strange looks like he desperately needs a nap. ]

Besides, I can go to the dining hall whenever I want. Traveling through mirrors has become something of a specialty of mine.

whattaprick: (like so whatever)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2017-03-02 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[ For a sudden, visceral moment, Lambert looks like he wants to strangle Strange. Forget about the rest of that, he's gonna hone in on the one thing that matters to him... ]

You could go to the dining hall this whole time? You could've brought the silver!

[ So yeah, most of it is in the form of forks and spoons and candlesticks, but any silver is better than none. If nothing else, it's a painful enough distraction for the vampires ... ]
kingsroads: (100% not prepared for this)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-02 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ ..........whoops. ]

Should I go over and get it now?

[ At least Strange looks properly apologetic. The idea of popping over, grabbing silver and popping right back has honestly never occurred to him. What a shock, Strange picks the showoffy method of dispatching vampires instead of the practical one. ]

[personal profile] whattaprick 2017-03-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
[ Lambert pauses, looks at Strange, then shakes his head. ]

No. It's there, they can use it if they need it. [ He doesn't, his stance would imply... ] Were any of the supervisors there?
kingsroads: (GIVE IT UP FOR MAGIC)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-03 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ Strange simply nods, his stance also implying that he'll be perfectly fine without silver. ]

I didn't see any of them. [ It's said with a frown and a pause. Strange knows that no supervisors in the dining room is definitely a bad idea. Granted, some of them might be out here in the melee, but others? Let's be real, some of the supervisors can't punch worth a shit. They should have been there. ]

I assume some of them are in the chaos but I've no idea about all of them.

whattaprick: (you've got explaining to do)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2017-03-05 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Shit. [ He'll exhale, glancing left and right. ]

I've bumped into them in the corridors. Must be dealing with the vampires ... or the vampires might have dealt with them.

[ He's not, by nature, an optimistic sort of person. ]

Definitely no sign of the nightrider. We're on our own.

kingsroads: (hrrmph)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-06 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[ So Lambert hasn't seen the nightrider either. How...odd. Where on Earth could she be? ]

I'm at a bit of a disadvantage--I doubt I'll be able to use a transformation spell again and we're stuck inside. Still, there's plenty of wind and fire around. I can make do. [ Lambert can already tell Strange is a bit exhausted. Who's got minimal actual combat experience and has just been pushing himself to the limit this whole fight: hint, it's Strange!

He just pushes past all that exhaustion as he gives Lambert a smile that's desperately trying to convey that he has his shit together.
]

It should be rather easy to lure the vampires out. I'm afraid I make a wonderful target.

[ skinny guy who can't punch vs. dude built like a brick shithouse. They're gonna go for Strange. ]
whattaprick: (piss off)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2017-03-08 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
A transformation spell? [ Lambert looks a bit blank, because what good is that going to do unless Strange can transform himself into something useful, like a giant bear and shit?

More importantly, he can tell that he's dead on his feet. ]

You make a slow target. And fire doesn't seem to bother them all that much. [ And as much as it rankles him to admit it ... ] There are too many of them to deal with. Best we can do is find people and get them back to that dining hall.

[ As far as dealing with enemies in bulk, wraiths and nekkers are part for the course. Vampires working in packs, though? That pisses him off. ]
kingsroads: (yeah what?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-08 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I turned a vampire into a bird. [ Just said as if it's the most obvious thing ever. No biggie! It happens! That's magic! (also gentlemen don't turn themselves into bears, tyvm, it is very undignified and also bears can't speak counterspells.)

Still, Strange nods at the idea of finding people because yep, that's something he's useful at.
]

The mirrors that I've been using are in the private rooms. If we find someone, we can send them to the dining room that way.

[ And then, gesturing for Lambert to follow him, he starts to make his way towards one of the private rooms he knows has a mirror in it. ]
whattaprick: (crap did i break a nail)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2017-03-09 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
A bird? Hope that's permanent. [ And hope there isn't a vampiric sparrow fluttering around somewhere, waiting to drink someone's blood.

In any case, he'll follow right after Strange, still keeping a wary eye out. Without the adrenaline of the fight, he's holding himself just a bit more gingerly; he's had his share of being tossed around tonight. ]

kingsroads: (something something peninsula)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-09 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see why it wouldn't be.

[ TINY LITTLE DRACULA BIRD flitting around the room, probably trying and failing to drink blood because birds don't really have teeth. What a pathetic existence Dracula Bird now leads.

Strange is also keeping an eye out for any vampires as he walks towards the room. Though really, he's not necessarily holding himself gingerly, he's just holding himself like if he's not careful, he'll collapse at any moment. Very purposeful, we're going from point to point sort of movements because if he stops moving he'll just crash.

Once they reach the private room, Strange pushes the door open, holding it open for Lambert to enter.
]
whattaprick: (snerk)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2017-03-09 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He'll push through, though not after another quick look around to make sure they aren't being marked, and not before he bites out a comment: ]

Seems like it took a lot out of you. [ He's not really concerned, he just doesn't want to have to haul dead weight around. ] If you fall over, I'm not picking you up.

[ Actually, he probably would pick him up, just because Strange is one of the few people he's met here that's weirdly someone he'd feel weird about leaving to die. Even if he is a magician. ]
kingsroads: (this won't end well)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-09 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Strange looks confused for a moment before...ah. Lambert's talking about how tired he seems. He attempts to shrug it off, trying to hide the fact that he really is that tired. He's got this, no problem, he'll just keep pushing through and keep helping out others no matter what. ]

I'm simply out of practice. I haven't done so many spells like this in such quick succession for a while.

[ Not since the peninsula, at least, and that was years ago. Best try and distract Lambert with a little joke. ]

Besides, if I fell over, I wouldn't expect you to pick me up in the first place!
whattaprick: (nyeh nyeh)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2017-03-10 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Yeah, sorry buddy, you're not convincing anyone here because you can't act worth shit. Lambert's going to take a few steps forward and catch him sharply by the shoulder, impatience obvious. ]

You're no good to anyone if you're dead on your feet, Strange. [ Too bad he doesn't realize they're turning people yet, or this would also be the time to joke about him making a shitty vampire... ]

They took the doctor. If you fuck yourself up I'm going to have to patch you up, and that's not going to end well.
Edited 2017-03-10 12:37 (UTC)
kingsroads: (HOW VERY DARE YOU)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-10 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[ As Lambert catches him by the shoulder, Strange attempts to brush the other man off, wriggling out of his grasp. ]

I'm not going to leave until we get as many of the carnival members as we can to safety. So it seems the solution to this problem is simply not to make a mistake.

[ you are talking to literally one of the most arrogant people in the carnival, buddy, what did you expect would happen.

Though it literally did not occur to Strange until JUST RIGHT NOW that Lambert's a nurse. Huh. That's unexpected.
]
whattaprick: (sincerity)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2017-03-12 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
[ Yeah, he's sure that train of thought is going to end real well. ]

Sure, tell me how that works out for you. Oh wait, you won't be able to, because you'll be dead.

[ Can he possibly provide motivation to people to be too scared to get injured? He sure as hell can try. Regardless, he jerks a thumb towards the mirror. ]

Try finding the supervisors. They took one, maybe the others are still here.
kingsroads: (something something peninsula)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-12 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
I was in the peninsula, you know. I've experience with this.

[ Experience with war, not experience with vampires.

Still, Lambert obviously knows what he's doing...and really, if Strange just flits around the area doing recon, that means there's less of those things he has to fight. His protest is just a token one: he doesn't mind doing recon and starts to walk towards the mirror as he does so.
]

If you find that you'll need my help, stay by a mirror. I'm trying to keep an eye on all the mirrors in the room as best I can.

[ It's a losing battle. But it's a battle that dammit, Strange is just going to keep trying to fight. ]
whattaprick: (Default)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2017-03-13 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You can't deal with monsters the same way you deal with people. [ Lambert rolls his eyes. Obvious stuff, Strange! ] If you try you're going to end up lunch.

[ He glances at the mirror, then frowns. ]

If I need you to come pull someone out, how do I get your attention? Can you hear through them?
kingsroads: (GIVE IT UP FOR MAGIC)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-13 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see through them. Back in my world, when I traveled through mirrors, it was via the king's roads, a set of roads in another realm created by the Raven King. Here, it's more of one mirror to another. Naturally I need to see where I'm going, so when I cast the requisite spell, I'm able to see all the options I know of.

[ He simply doesn't use that aspect often, as Strange's weird mirror thing is usually from point A to point B. That also doesn't answer the question. Strange frowns a bit, thinking. ]

So, just back up close to one, I assume.
whattaprick: (crap did i break a nail)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2017-03-17 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Signal you with my ass? Sounds like a plan. [ Lambert deadpans. Should have thought that one through, Strange. ]

Need me to turn around and let you memorize what it looks like?
kingsroads: (why is norrell like this)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-17 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[ 'Why are you like this,' thinks the other person that everybody in the carnival thinks 'why are you like this' about. Still, Strange keeps his tone fairly light as he gives Lambert a roll of his eyes ]

I'm sorry to disappoint, but your size and muscle should make you recognizable enough.

[ After all, there's not that many people here who are built like a brick shithouse. ]
whattaprick: (snerk)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2017-03-18 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
[ This is arguably true. Lambert might be shorter than Strange, but he almost definitely outweighs his wet noodle of a self. ]

All right. [ He tosses him a lazy salute, then turns to the mirror. ]

You're the magician. What now?
kingsroads: (GUESS WHAT IT IS TIME FOR HAM)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-03-18 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
What, traveling through mirrors? That part's easy.

[ Strange turns towards the mirror and just straight up walks through it. If Lambert touches it, the mirror remains solid. Strange's body is what changes, as if he's being sucked through the mirror. It only takes a few seconds and Strange is so confident throughout that it's obvious he's done this before.

And...that's pretty much it. There's no sign that Strange is reappearing in the mirror, as he's probably off in one of the other rooms, looking for the supervisors.
]
