⇨ GAME START INTRO LOG!

Who: EVERYONE!
When: NOW!
Where: Around the carnival grounds, and in the Cookhouse.
What: Carnival worker orientation, Ringmaster style.
Warnings: Alcohol consumption, maybe drugs. Other things?

BRAVE NEW WORLD

THE NEW: It doesn't matter when you entered the tent to discuss your new contract with the Ringmaster, you exit it beneath a blanket of stars. Pointedly alien stars at that - currently the carnival grounds are being treated to a show of shooting stars, and what appear to be unnaturally large and living green moons hanging just a bit too close. The carnival was bustling when you entered, but now it's in the latter stages of being shut down for the night. If you manage to find a clock, it states that it's around 8PM.

Workers from during the day will be passing through the grounds, attending to various pieces of business. None of them will seem very surprised or concerned by the goings on, though some may be sympathetic enough to pause and answer your questions. If you put some effort into finding out how it became nighttime, you may discover that it's been anywhere from a few hours to 7 days since you originally signed your contract. Someone may explain to you that it was probably some kind of time bubble, meant to keep you out of the way until the Ringmaster had time to deal with you.

Every few minutes another new person will pop out of the tent, looking just as confused and under the impression that they had only just finished discussing things with the Ringmaster. Weird.

She passed you a note before you left. Opening it up, you'll see you've been assigned a trailer number, and been given the instructions to drop off any excess belongings and do what you can to get settled in. You have until exactly 9:36PM to do so, because that's when you'll be expected to attend what is listed only as "WORKER'S ORIENTATION".

This is, perhaps, more abrupt than you were expecting - but what can you do? You're here for the long haul.

THE OLD: If you've ever seen a mass recruitment before, then this is no surprise. People enter the tent when they're recruited, and then sometimes how up again days later when the Ringmaster is ready for them. She isn't a big fan of wasting her time on individual orientations when she's expecting a crowd.

Maybe you're too jaded to all of this to care much, but you'll see the newbies wandering around, probably confused and maybe a bit lost. Maybe you're the kind whose is sympathetic enough to pause your role in clean up and give them some directions, and maybe a word of confidence. Maybe you'll just jeer at them, because you're some kind of asshole. Either way, you expect you'll have the chance to see them later tonight.

Whether by world of mouth, radio, or written note, supervisors will be passing out the following message: all workers are to report to the Cookhouse at 9:36PM sharp for "orientation." If you are at all familiar with how things go around here, you probably have a good idea of what this implies.

Mandatory Karaoke Night.

MANDATORY KARAOKE NIGHT!!!

At 9:36PM, the main dining hall of the Cookhouse will be found heavily decorator with various coloured lights and at least one disco ball made of what is ostensibly high karat gems. There are a bunch of cushions and additional seating set up along with the usual tables, and at the head of the call there is a state set up - a karaoke stage. For veteran workers, this is no surprise. Karaoke nights are fairly frequent as activities go, even if they are not usually mandatory. Some of you probably have signature songs already prepared.

The karaoke machine is set up with mostly karaoke tracks that would be popular in the 90's and 00's on the average modern earth, with a few that are more recent. It also has some other random stuff from other worlds that people rarely sing because they are confusing and in languages no one understands. Here is a big karaoke list for your inspiration! The more stereotypically karaoke the better.

Beyond that, there is plenty of food and snacks that were prepared by the cooks earlier, as well as a bar set up for alcohol and other vices. The selection is, as most things in the carnival, eclectic.

Music will be played in between if nobody is singing, and otherwise veterans are encouraged to bring along their own fun and show the newbies a good time. The Ringmaster does ask that vets attempt to be courteous to their new coworkers.

It's just being a good host.

trailer park!

[ Pidge is... well, 'in a bad mood' is probably the wrong way of putting it. Sulking might be better. This whole having to work for a year to pay off a dumb carnival ticket thing is really crimping her goals. Those being find her friends, find her family. Even if what she's being told about the passage of time is true, she's not a patient person in this regard. Strolling through the rows of trailers and lost in her own thoughts, she very nearly bumps into the other diminutive teenager. Yuugi handles the rest. ]

Ah, uh. No problem--I'm just trying to get my bearings around here. Wasn't paying attention to where I was going.

[Oh hey. He recognizes her from the Gamer's Circle, which makes him perk a bit. Considering Yuugi hadn't counted on knowing anyone, it's a nice surprise, though it does make him wonder. His hand wanders to his arm, feeling a little subconscious - he hasn't been that absent minded since his early high school years, before everything.

He gives her a small nod, cheeks turning pink.]

Neither was I...it throws you off a bit, doesn't it? I mean I'm used to magic but I got a bit, uh, distracted.

[Shadow magic and the like besides was entirely...different to what he was feeling here. Yuugi rubs the back of his neck before inclining his head.]

Is, ah, there anything I can do to help?

[ Aw, he's blushing. Pidge's arms are akimbo as she replies, something like a shrug coming from the girl. ]

I was just getting used to space and lions and Galra and now I'm stuck here.

[ Pidge grimaces, then shakes her head as her expression eases into more of a relaxed smile. It's hesitant, guarded, but she appreciates that someone wants to check up on her. ]

Not really. Thanks, though.

After everything I've been through, space really shouldn't be that surprising.

[But considering he comes from the taill end of the 90s, it kind of is. Shaking off the thought, he recognises her body language, if only because a couple of his friends were the same to start with. Yuugi's lips pursed together in a small frown before he sighs a little, placing his hands into his pockets after thumbing his holster belt a little.]

If you're sure. I mean, I know it's not like we know each other very well, so I get that, but we're here. We might be here for a long while. [He rocks on his heels, tilting his head with a shrug.] I guess I just wanted to make sure you knew you weren't as alone as you probably feel.

[ Pidge still feels awkward. She's been taken from everything that was starting to feel comfortable and thrust into this new situation without even her friends from the Galaxy Garrison cadets. Her shoulders tense a little as she shoves her hands into her pockets. ]

I... I appreciate it, really. Um...

[ She frowns. ]

Uh, I don't think I got your name.

[Yuugi taps the toe of his sneaker to the ground, suddenly feeling a little sheepish. Not everyone was into friendship speeches, he knew, but it made him feel better and less alone, even if that hadn't been a full blown one like Anzu was known to give. Maybe he said too much...though he then tilts his head and his eyes widen when he realizes he didn't give his name in the Gamer's Circle earlier...last week? Whenever it had been.]

Ah, Yuugi. Yuugi Mutou. Sorry, I guess it slipped my mind.

[Around all those games, who wouldn't? His ears flick back on top of his head as he considers something, then purses his lips together.]

And...it's okay if you want to be alone too. Grandpa says people handle things differently, so...the same can be said for any situation.

[And that's kind of hypocritical considering his actions since Atem's departure. Ra's sake...]

Nice to meet you, Yuugi. I guess. It's kind of a weird situation...

[ Pidge sighs heavily, then straightens. ]

I'm...

[ She was about to say 'Katie' but something holds her back. Why not be Pidge here? At least until she knew if she could trust these people or not. Yuugi seemed nice and all, but after being tricked into taking a contract, she was hesitant. She lets out a small breath. ]

Pidge. My name is Pidge. Your grandpa sounds like he knows what he's talking about.

[If he notices the hesitation in regards to her name, he disinclines to comment about it. There's no point in prodding something from someone who might not wish to talk about it pot, kettle, black. Instead, he nods, glancing off to the side.]

Mmm. He taught me a lot about what I know, not just dueling.

[Yuugi couldn't deny feeling a little bad about leaving his grandfather, but he needed this. Some time alone, away from everyone. He looks at her again, looking sheepish.]

I'm, uh, sorry if I sounded pushy. I don't know your situation after all.
sweatysometimes: (peanut butter not peanuts)

[personal profile] sweatysometimes 2016-10-19 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Pidge gives a non-committal shrug. Yuugi seems like a nice enough guy, but it's hard to be thrown out into this weirdness all on her own without someone or something familiar to hold on to. ]

It's okay. We're all kinda in the same boat.

[ A pause. ]

Wait, dueling?
toogoodtoopure: ([14])

[personal profile] toogoodtoopure 2016-10-19 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Uh...

[A little sheepishly, Yuugi reaches around and undoes the clasp to his holster, fingers wrapping around his deck. There's a small moment of hesitation before he pulls it out, showing her the full deck and then pulling it back to shuffle the cards.]

It's a card game that became kinda popular in the last couple of years. Tournaments, gaming systems...I've even heard it'll be important in the future. [Lifting a card, he hands it to her to look at.] There's all sorts of monsters and traps and spell cards that you can build a deck with.

[personal profile] sweatysometimes 2016-10-19 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Pidge peers at the card she's been handed. Huh. That's kinda neat, she guesses. She's never been into card games much, but hey. It looks fun. She bobs her head and offers it back to Yuugi with a sheepish grin. ]

I was imagining you swinging a sword or something.
toogoodtoopure: ([38])

[personal profile] toogoodtoopure 2016-10-19 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh jeez no I'm terrible with a sword. I'm too short for starters.

[Briefly thinking about Kaiba-kun's virtual world, Yuugi takes the card back and places it into his deck before replacing the whole thing into his holster, clicking it shut. His cheeks flush a slight pink before he sighs.]

There's a reason I played games after school rather than take kendo or something as a club activity.
sweatysometimes: (-.-)

Sorry this is so late.

[personal profile] sweatysometimes 2016-10-26 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno, you don't have to be tall to use a sword...

[ Pidge smiles, mostly to herself as she thinks about her bayard. That makes her think of her friends, though, and her smile vanishes. ]

Eh, yeah. I was always more into computers than that kinda thing.
