⇨ THE SUMMERLANDS

Who: Everyone!
When: Day 138 - Day 152
Where: The Summerlands
What: The Ringmaster brings the carnival to the Summerlands immediately after being freed from Portland so that everyone can take a fucking nap. Her included.
Warnings: Individually marked! Most likely discussion of torture and trauma in here.

DAYS OF SUMMER

You made it! And things are back to normal... more or less. Upon waking, you will be greeted with a clear blue sky and gentle breeze – the carnival has found itself situated between a pair of mountain peaks, with great fields of flowers extending in the distance. In the other direction, you’ll see mountain-top cities and tall waterfalls accenting vast swaths of forest.

Some of you will already know this place. It’s the Summerlands. You game here once to rest in safety nearly a year ago, and now you’ve come to rest once again.

► WAKING UP: Shortly after the carnival arrives, the Ringmaster will send out a somewhat cryptic radio message - but her immediate location won't be clear. Whatever items you had on your person at the time the Severing was broken will still be on your person, including whatever clothing. All of the animals and pets of the carnival will have returned to the grounds as well, though they are currently free from their designated living spaces. Things in the carnival will appeared to have naturally aged a month, as if the carnival was been sitting here empty and waiting while everyone was in Portland. The lawn needs mowing.

► SUMMER CITY: After the Summer Fae become aware of everyone's presence, they will welcome you into their city. There are stairs that lead up the sides of the mountains, but thankfully there are also magical means of getting up there as well. The Summer Fae will be willing to help workers with the injured as needed, offering herbal remedies and healing magic to those that want it. You'll also be invited to join them for dinner, but they will not be particularly offended if they are turned down, for now.

► SUMMER PEOPLE: The fae here will mostly enjoy the company of any carnival members that offer it - it doesn't seem that much happens here besides day after day of peaceful meditation and relaxation. It is not uncommon to see Summer Fae spent days doing exactly the same thing, whether that be enjoying the weather, listening to music, or dancing - the day and night periods may be similar to earth, but when you don't need rest it can all blur together just the same. Some of the fae work on feats of agriculture or craftsmanship, and while there is no particularly need to work in this place, they take pride in the fact that they do.

► NEW ARRIVALS: Though the Ringmaster will not be offering much guidance for the first week or so, eventually the carnival will begin running for a few small performance sessions, off and on, as a thank you to their fae hosts. The carnival will also be open to receiving new arrivals during that period, and so there will likely be some newbies to train and get orientated as well.

"You left my Circle." Ash laughed, which may be one of the most hollow noises ever uttered within the carnival to date. "I mean, how pathetic is that? You quit and I thought you needed to be taken out eventually before you took me out. Like some sort of stoolie. You knew too much." And she laughed again, because she promised she wouldn't cry.

How does one respond to this. Hell if Strange knows. So he just kind of looks a bit awkward as Ash continues talking. There's no good way to talk about how one person's alternate world self was apparently megalomaniacal

"Considering how badly the Circle had fallen apart once everything started happening, I'd say Portland-Ash had a lot more to worry about than one errant mage."

He hopes Ash understands what he meant by 'everything.' It's hard to find a way to describe all the drama and confusion that goes along with a world-changing ritual in just one word.

"That doesn't make the thought any more excusable. And I'm sorry for ever thinking it towards you. No matter the circumstances." The apology was less for him, when it came down to it, and more for herself -- an effort to acknowledge how very wrong she had been, to make clear the realization that she needed to become a better person.
kingsroads: (well drat now)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-08-13 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Ash, you know that I accept your apology," he responds, with a little nod. Ash wasn't herself, after all--and she certainly wasn't going to be doing anything like that again. Besides, what sort of hypocrite would he be if he didn't accept her apology when he was apologizing to everyone else?

"Really, I think all of us want to put that month behind us as quickly as possible."
amusicaladventure: (Sadness)

[personal profile] amusicaladventure 2017-08-14 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's the kind of month that stays with you for the rest of your life," Ash said quietly, finally disengaging from him and giving his poor ribs a respite. She really was quite strong, after all. "I'm not even sure how some of us can, but... we can at least pretend it never happened, maybe?" Not for herself, but at least for her tenuous connections to others. She didn't deserve them, but she'd hate to lose them nonetheless...
kingsroads: (why is norrell like this)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-08-15 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Trust me," Strange responds, with a grumpy sigh. "I've a few things I need to say to some people but after that, I'm perfectly fine pretending last month never happened."

The sooner everything could get back to normal around this place, the better. Though, considering that the Ringmaster's currently an egg...well, it might take a while before normal happens.

"I'd like to believe that's possible." But Ash felt she'd remember Portland for the rest of her life, no matter what she pretended. "Hey... are you doing okay? You know..."

She waved a hand vaguely, because SHE didn't know, except to worry.
kingsroads: (sadly resigned)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-08-16 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Truth be told, he's not doing as okay as he could be. But Ash is already worried about herself as is, she doesn't need to worry about him as well.

"I'll be fine eventually," Strange simply remarks, with a small smile on his face. He's not going to pretend that he's perfectly fine right now--especially since if someone started asking more about the circumstances of Portland's last week, there's no way anyone would be fine from that. But he doesn't want Ash to worry. "These things always take more time than we realize."
amusicaladventure: (Thinking)

[personal profile] amusicaladventure 2017-08-16 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ash didn't think he was doing okay at all, judging by his sudden weird obsession with cleaning. She was pretty sure that no matter how much anyone pretended, they were probably not doing okay. (And yet she believed that if she faked it, no one would notice she was in a bad way too. Logical thinking was not foremost in her mind at the moment.)

"Well. If there's anything I can do? And I mean anything, there's a hell of a lot I can do." Though she paused then, scratching her cheek thoughtfully with one claw. That looked like it should hurt, honestly, though it really didn't. "Though I'm pretty sure directly curing mental trauma with magic would just be all sorts of bad, so let's not try that."
kingsroads: (dude are you sure?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-08-17 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
"I doubt you could do that in the first place. Magic can't cure madness, after all." It's said as if it's a maxim, something Strange had told people time and time again...though they are in a different realm with different rules and different strains of magic from all over various realms.

"At least, that's how it worked in my world," he quickly amends. "But no, I can't think of anything needed in the first place--aside from the dish soap, of course, which you've already brought over. I'll be certain to return it once I've finished."
amusicaladventure: (Shrug)

[personal profile] amusicaladventure 2017-08-17 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
"There's nothing mine can't do." That was not literally true, but Ash did have an immense scope and breadth of ability -- if she could sing it, she could achieve it. "But since I don't control it directly, there's a lot of chance of -- you know, side effects and unintended consequences. So you don't go down that road."

Small wonder her amoral self had disturbed her so much. Ash knew perfectly well just what she could accomplish with that personality and her actual power.
kingsroads: (i might have goofed that up)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-08-17 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
At least in Strange's mind, he's taking Ash's statement as the sort of egotism that he's guilty of on a daily basis. After all, no form of magic that he knows of could do everything. And why would one willingly admit their failings in the first place?

"The reaction of the people themselves might be just as bad as the side effects. I doubt anybody would want their minds tampered with any time soon even if it was intended to help."

You know, because of that whole fake memories thing and all that.
amusicaladventure: (Alarm)

[personal profile] amusicaladventure 2017-08-17 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"I wouldn't do it without permission!"

For all that Ash worried about her amoral self, she might be able to worry a little less if she thought about it -- when her first reaction to the suggestion is quick indignation and assurances that she wouldn't use her magic like that without consent.

"But I wouldn't do it WITH permission either, because -- yeah, I don't know how it'd come out."
kingsroads: (i might have goofed that up)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-08-18 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Badly, that's how it'd come out.

"Of course, since we've started talking about this memory nonsense again, it wouldn't surprise me if we're dangerously close to jinxing the next place the carnival stops at. Perhaps we should stop while we're still ahead?"

It's Strange trying to turn the conversation back to something teasing and fun because the more he talks about people possibly meddling with memories, the more he really doesn't want to think about people possibly meddling with memories.
amusicaladventure: (Anger)

[personal profile] amusicaladventure 2017-08-18 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh come on. The Ringmaster will be really sorry she accidentally put us through hell yet again, and will take us to some awesome place than turns out to be super-sketchy." Ash still had a little lurking bitterness over the dimension of questionable consent.
kingsroads: (maybe we can talk about other things?)

[personal profile] kingsroads 2017-08-19 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Alola wasn't that bad." Strange is smiling though, obviously teasing. He knows Ash is referring to the Celebration but that's potentially a whole different can of worms for them to deal with.

"Though I'll admit, I am still a bit confused as to how the economy there actually worked in the first place." Strange had gotten the basic gist of Pokemon battles but surely an entire world couldn't run on dogfighting and then taking other people's money.
amusicaladventure: (Pointing it out)

[personal profile] amusicaladventure 2017-08-19 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sure, it wasn't that bad till you start thinking about how humans are absolutely necessary to the development of some of the creatures there." She didn't want to get into a thing, but she sure wasn't joking. Creepy and a little twisted in her opinion!
