DAYS OF SUMMER↴![]() You made it! And things are back to normal... more or less. Upon waking, you will be greeted with a clear blue sky and gentle breeze – the carnival has found itself situated between a pair of mountain peaks, with great fields of flowers extending in the distance. In the other direction, you’ll see mountain-top cities and tall waterfalls accenting vast swaths of forest. Some of you will already know this place. It’s the Summerlands. You game here once to rest in safety nearly a year ago, and now you’ve come to rest once again. ► WAKING UP: Shortly after the carnival arrives, the Ringmaster will send out a somewhat cryptic radio message - but her immediate location won't be clear. Whatever items you had on your person at the time the Severing was broken will still be on your person, including whatever clothing. All of the animals and pets of the carnival will have returned to the grounds as well, though they are currently free from their designated living spaces. Things in the carnival will appeared to have naturally aged a month, as if the carnival was been sitting here empty and waiting while everyone was in Portland. The lawn needs mowing. ► SUMMER CITY: After the Summer Fae become aware of everyone's presence, they will welcome you into their city. There are stairs that lead up the sides of the mountains, but thankfully there are also magical means of getting up there as well. The Summer Fae will be willing to help workers with the injured as needed, offering herbal remedies and healing magic to those that want it. You'll also be invited to join them for dinner, but they will not be particularly offended if they are turned down, for now. ► SUMMER PEOPLE: The fae here will mostly enjoy the company of any carnival members that offer it - it doesn't seem that much happens here besides day after day of peaceful meditation and relaxation. It is not uncommon to see Summer Fae spent days doing exactly the same thing, whether that be enjoying the weather, listening to music, or dancing - the day and night periods may be similar to earth, but when you don't need rest it can all blur together just the same. Some of the fae work on feats of agriculture or craftsmanship, and while there is no particularly need to work in this place, they take pride in the fact that they do. ► NEW ARRIVALS: Though the Ringmaster will not be offering much guidance for the first week or so, eventually the carnival will begin running for a few small performance sessions, off and on, as a thank you to their fae hosts. The carnival will also be open to receiving new arrivals during that period, and so there will likely be some newbies to train and get orientated as well. |

"Lambert and Yuya were able to spot the unicorns from a hot-air balloon ride. Should we try that first, or do you have another idea?"
Though really, between Yuya and Lambert and Strange and Peridot, the carnival's going to probably end up banned from those hot air balloons. And yes, Strange is already planning how best to do his and Peridot's grand unicorn adventure because obviously it's going to happen.

"I might be able to get us close to them--that all depends on what sort of water's around, of course. If that doesn't work, I can call up a fog which might help instead."
no subject
"Getting close isn't going to do us much good if it's just going to sense us and then run away," Peridot sighs, drumming her claws on the opposite shoulder. "Maybe we can try to lure one in somehow...? I mean. What to unicorns even like? Aside from virgins."

Strange might not know how to deal with horned animals, but he at least has experience in horses. They're remotely close to the one animal he knows how to handle so dammit, let's treat unicorns like horses, who cares that they're most likely fairly different.
Though he does spot that unimpressed look on Peridot's face. Might as well make one last attempt at shilling Team Magic.
"If we get one relatively close, I can easily hold it still, so that's one less thing to worry about."

Questions for later.
As to his second point, she gives him a curious look. "Oh yeah? How?"
no subject
With only a small little smug smile on his face, he bends down to the ground. While there, he clenches his fist around a bit of grass and dirt. As he does so, a small hand made of earth pushes forward out of the ground to grab onto Peridot's leg. It's grip is loose enough that she can break out of it: this is just Strange showing off his magic and being obnoxious.
"Like so."
Finally, an appropriate use for this icon
"H... How did you DO THAT?" she wheezes, widened eyes flicking rapidly between Strange and the ground. SHE GETS THAT IT'S MAGIC? BUT. HOW...
no subject
"Magic." No shit, Strange. "I asked the earth if it wouldn't mind holding you still for a moment or two. I've cast a spell of that sort before, in the peninsula, so it was quite easy to reproduce it here."
no subject
And then suddenly, her eyes narrow with suspicion and flick up to bore into Strange's. "Wait a tick..." Peridot points an accusing claw at the magician. "I didn't hear you utter a single syllable this whole time! Which means you can't have asked it anything. TELL ME HOW IT REALLY WORKS! YOU LIAR!"
This is what you get for spooking her and getting her all riled up, Strange.

"Most of my spells do use incantations," he'll admit. "But if I have a good enough rapport with the element I'm using, I can ask it to do something with just a thought and a gesture."
no subject
"Hmmmmm..." Just as quickly as she'd gotten upset, Peridot seems sufficiently appeased by that explanation. She's back to squinting at the dirt. "I still don't get how you can ask the ground something. Back on Homeworld, I was a certified kindergartner, which means I dealt with different kinds of soil a lot. And I can't recall a single point at which I ever talked to it, or it ever talked to me."
She's no longer questioning that he can talk to the dirt or whatever, at least? She's just genuinely curious as to how. Before he can answer, though, Peridot gives him another sharp look, this time her eyes alight with determination.
"Teach me how."
Pause.
"...Uh. Please."
no subject
"It seems some things from Portland ring true for both of us, apprentice." He'll help, but there's going to be a little teasing no matter what.
"I'll gladly teach you, but it isn't as simple as me just telling you an incantation and you casting it. I suspect we'll need to start with the basic tenants of English magic and work our way up from there."
It will most likely involve so much reading.

"YES!" the gem exclaims triumphantly at his agreement, pumping both fists in the air and wobbling precariously on her perch. The excitement is putting some much needed pep back in her step, to a degree that's been absent until now, what with her still nursing that soul wound. "Nyeheheh... Imagine how impressed Amethyst will be when she comes back and sees that I've learned how to make THE GROUND DO MY BIDDING!"
And with that display of exuberance out of the way, Strange will find himself on the receiving end of a sharp-toothed grin, with Peridot beaming at him politely. "So, how do we get started?"
no subject
Strange can't help but find himself grinning at Peridot as well, still feeding off her energy and boosting it with his own confidence and arrogance. This should be easy! One of his earliest spells involved manipulating the earth, he could teach her this in a heartbeat! (Of course, by thinking this, it means the process is going to be long and annoying, but Strange is entirely unaware that he's jinxing himself.)
"Research! I've a few books about magic, I'll have you read those to understand the fundamental theory of what I cast." He pauses, before, "Of course, if you know any magic already, I would like to see it. Perhaps we can adapt the framework of the spell to suit your particular style."
