HOME GROUND↴![]() At long last, it is over. The Prince is dead, and all of his stolen Names have been restored - all that's left to do is treat the wounds and move on. For the first day or two, the Ringmaster will be arranging passage for the servants that are left, all of which have remembered their names for the first time in years. The earth elemental that had been trapped and forced to serve as the Prince's manor, the Heart of Stone, is happy to help for the moment. It appreciates the Ringmaster's mercy, and is free after untold eons of imprisonment. Yet, there are plenty of aspects that are far from simple. There are still servants left mad and transformed into beasts, with no easy way to change them back. The Prince's spells outlive him, and those bearing his poison and his curses will have a difficult road ahead of them. Though most of the bestial servants have been rounded up, and a large number that had been reduced to unmoving statues returned, even the Ringmaster can't return them to normal so simply. The next week is for rest and for settling remaining affairs. If you want to bid farewell to any particular NPCs, or assure care is given where it's needed, now is the time to do it. ► A CURE: The Ringmaster will tell everyone simply - there is no simple way to undo another fae's magic. The Prince's powers were essentially on par with hers, which means that those who have been transformed to stone and those that were cursed into beasts and driven insane are not something she can trivially fix. It will take the work of the carnival and a couple weeks of treatment to shed the curse of stone, and the maddened servants are an entirely separate matter. She will do what she can, but for the most part she is arranging for the Prince's servants to be cared for elsewhere. At least for now, the Ringmaster will be animating the stone portions of people's bodies with magic, though those portions will still be a bit clumsy and numb feeling. ► THE NEW HEARTSTONE: In the absence of the prince, the Heart of Stone will be taking over the remains of the Prince's realm and preventing it from collapsing into void. As it turns out, the manor had been an earth elemental all along - a form of Wyld Fae almost on par to the Prince and Ringmaster themselves. How the Heart of Stone was enslaved is a long story presumably, but the Ringmaster considers it to be a sign of the Prince's own depravity. The Heart will be allowing visitors for the first couple days of this period through the portal, but keep in mind you are essentially just walking around on its body. At least the realm has a floor, now, instead an endless abyss surrounding it. |

She elaborates, because Rita can't resist an opportunity to complain. "The venom's annoying as hell, and I'm bored out of my mind hanging around here all day, but my injuries should be fully healed before long."
no subject
He puts his hands on his hips as he stops in front of the couch. "I'm glad." He doesn't say he was worried, but he was. It's a relief to see her so aware, if ill. He can get being bored about bedrest, though he thinks she should stay put.
He might have just the thing to placate her, however. "I can show you how duel monsters works if you want."
no subject
As always, Rita tries not to look too eager... but yes, she is really bored, and it is an activity that won't be too strenuous while she's in this condition...
"I guess this is a good time for it." She nods to the table across from her, then rises to her feet to move over there. Fortunately, in this cramped trailer, it's only about two steps away.

"Okay. So the basic rules of the game are that each player has life points. You use monsters to attack each other until someone's life points are zero. They're also magic and trap cards that can make monsters stronger, or stop attacks, or change the game field. Summoning is simple, but those get really complicated."
no subject
Gesturing at the deck of cards, she asks, "So how do we use those monsters?"
no subject
"You summon them on the monster zones." He points to the stars on the cards. "If a monster is four levels or less, you can summon them directly. But if they're level five or six, you have to tribute one monster to summon them."
He points to the dragon card next. "If they're level seven or above, you have to tribute two monsters. There's a bunch of special summoning methods as well, but that's the most basic one! Once per turn you're allowed to attack with all your monsters on the field. If the other player has monsters, you have to attack them... uh, but magic and trap cards and monster effects can change that."
no subject
The summoning part doesn't seem too complicated, so... "All right. So what about these trap and magic cards? How do I use them?" Without them, one would assume the key is just to summon strong monsters and attack relentlessly... but from what Yuya's saying, these other cards must be major game-changers.
no subject
He holds up a magic card first. It's the same color as the bottom half of the dragon monster card. "This one lets me use the effect of a card again. So whip viper lets me swap the attack and defense stats of my opponent's monster. I can do that again to another monster if I use this card!"
He helpfully points out the snake card and the stats on it for emphasis. His movements are more lively and energetic as he goes on, and for a moment it's like the past week hasn't even happened to him.
The trap card is next. "If my whip viper got destroyed, this card would let me summon it back again. You lay them face down on the field and you have to wait to use them, but you can use them during the battle phase. Most magic cards can't."
no subject
Rita watches the demonstration, nodding to show her comprehension. "Right... traps cards during the battle phase, magic cards outside of it." Seems like an important detail to consider while making a strategy. She's starting to understand what Yuya meant when he said these cards could complicate the game...
"Anything else I should know about?"
no subject
"A lot, but it'll get overwhelming if I try and explain everything at once! But there's a summoning method I use a lot called a pendulum summon."
He picks the dragon card up and holds it gently between his fingers. He props his chin on his hand, letting Rita get a good look at the card. "Odd-Eyes is a pendulum monster. I can summon him like a monster, or I can put him in one of the two pendulum zones and he acts like a magic card. Those little numbers set the scale, and when I set the pendulum I can summon as many monsters between the scale numbers as I have in my hand."
no subject
...Not because she'd be the kind of person to get angry over a card game... No way.
But then again, there might be other techniques and combinations that are just as powerful. She'll have to wait and see.
no subject
"You have to get your cards in the right place, and the other summoning methods are just as strong." He looks down at his Odd Eyes with fondness. "But that one's my favorite."
He turns his gaze back up to Rita... but his expression slips a little because this time, when he sees her bruises, he notices the shape of them. He figures she's not wearing her blastia due to the injury, and it looks like...
"Um... what happened to you during the hunt?"
no subject
She follows his gaze, her fingers brushing against her bruised throat... Right. Rita knows what this looks like. She should probably cover it up with a scarf or something when she leaves the trailer... Yuya's one thing, but getting awkward questions from strangers would be a pain.
"It's... what it looks like, basically," she says, mustering up a bit of her usual haughtiness in her voice, but her hands, resting on the table, visibly tense. "Somebody was both strong and stupid enough to fight a monster with his bare hands." She's reluctant to say who... even though she knows Yuya probably wouldn't jump to blaming 9S. He was out hunting, too.
no subject
"So he's the one that killed you, right? Are you really..." Okay, because he knows it had to be traumatizing for everyone involved whether they show it or not. He frowns, worrying over his lip.
"I know it's not my fault, the hunt, but I'm still really sorry. You didn't deserve all of that."
no subject
"I'm okay," she says firmly, answering the question he didn't quite finish asking. "It's just... weird... that I can remember being something that isn't me." Weird is putting it lightly, but she's not about to come out and say it's terrifying or sickening, even though that's a lot more accurate. She remembers looking at her friends and wanting to eat them. She remembers her friends looking at her with expressions of fear, and pain, and cold disdain...
"Whose bright idea was that, anyway? The Ringmaster's?" When in doubt, Rita's going to go ahead and blame the Ringmaster.
no subject
There's a heavy bitterness as he almost spits out the Prince's name, and just thinking about it still fills him with anger and grief. When he looks back at Rita his expression is tighter, like he doesn't want it to spill out. "You're my friend, I'd never want to hurt you!"
no subject
Yuya's next outburst leaves Rita slightly flustered. "I... I know that! I never thought you would." It's Yuya, after all. And besides, she remembers how scared he looked when they were fighting. There was never any question about his intentions.
no subject
The awkward silence sits for a moment before his gaze is drawn back to his deck for a moment. "Um, do you want to play sometime? I don't know if I can split my deck, but I have friends from home here. I bet they'd be willing to sit with us and let you borrow their deck, or you could borrow most of mine."
Most of his. But he doesn't think one card will make a huge difference to Rita if she's still learning.
no subject
Yuya... He really must be going through a lot. Rita knows she's not the only friend he nearly lost. Even with the worst behind them... that just means there's time now to let it sink in, to actually feel all the emotions that had to be pushed aside in the heat of the moment.
She sighs. "Of course I'll play. What, you think I sat through your explanation just so I could chicken out?" Her tone is haughty. Normal. There's a pause, and then she adds, curiously, "Only most of yours?"
no subject
But then he has to explain himself. "Um, it's just that Odd Eyes is special?" He flusters, rubbing the back of his neck. He feels kind of bad about not sharing him. He's sure it makes him look selfish or like he doesn't trust Rita, but the idea of giving Odd Eyes to anyone else is uncomfortable. It makes them both nervous.
"No one else has ever dueled with him except me, it's..." Mentally he scrambles for an explanation Rita will understand. "It'd be like if you gave someone your blastia to use!"
no subject
Absently, she touches her fingers to her throat once again, frowning slightly at the blastia's absence. Once the swelling goes down enough and the bruising starts healing, she should be able to wear it again... but right now, it's best if she doesn't put anything tight around her neck.
"Right... I guess that makes sense." She doesn't really understand his attachment to the card, but most people don't understand Rita's attachment to the blastia, either... so she'll leave it at that.
"I'm sure I can still beat you or any of your dumb friends, even without your special card," she smugly adds, acting completely confident for absolutely no good reason.
no subject
"But I'll show you how to use the rest of my deck, that way when you play you already know what you're doing." Provided, you know, Rita doesn't have any issues with playing with the circus animal cards.
no subject
So as Yuya continues explaining the cards, Rita is an active listener, frequently asking questions about terminology, rules, and hypothetical situations in the game.
After some time, though, he'll notice that Rita starts to run out of steam. Her focus wanes, she asks questions about things that were already explained, and she starts having short bouts of zoning out.
no subject
"You look tired, Rita. Maybe you should rest some more."
no subject
She sighs, visibly frustrated with herself. "I know... I just shouldn't be getting tired this quickly." She's tougher than that. Or she should be.
