⇨ THE PRINCE IS DEAD

Who: Everyone!
When: Day 178 - B1: Day 6
Where: The Carnival and sometimes on top of the Heart of Stone.
What: Now that the Prince is dead and gone, there's a lot left to sort out. As the remaining servants are liberated and those captured by the Prince are tended to, it's time for recovery and goodbyes.
Warnings: Nothing in particular.

HOME GROUND

At long last, it is over. The Prince is dead, and all of his stolen Names have been restored - all that's left to do is treat the wounds and move on. For the first day or two, the Ringmaster will be arranging passage for the servants that are left, all of which have remembered their names for the first time in years. The earth elemental that had been trapped and forced to serve as the Prince's manor, the Heart of Stone, is happy to help for the moment. It appreciates the Ringmaster's mercy, and is free after untold eons of imprisonment.

Yet, there are plenty of aspects that are far from simple. There are still servants left mad and transformed into beasts, with no easy way to change them back. The Prince's spells outlive him, and those bearing his poison and his curses will have a difficult road ahead of them. Though most of the bestial servants have been rounded up, and a large number that had been reduced to unmoving statues returned, even the Ringmaster can't return them to normal so simply.

The next week is for rest and for settling remaining affairs. If you want to bid farewell to any particular NPCs, or assure care is given where it's needed, now is the time to do it.

A CURE: The Ringmaster will tell everyone simply - there is no simple way to undo another fae's magic. The Prince's powers were essentially on par with hers, which means that those who have been transformed to stone and those that were cursed into beasts and driven insane are not something she can trivially fix. It will take the work of the carnival and a couple weeks of treatment to shed the curse of stone, and the maddened servants are an entirely separate matter. She will do what she can, but for the most part she is arranging for the Prince's servants to be cared for elsewhere. At least for now, the Ringmaster will be animating the stone portions of people's bodies with magic, though those portions will still be a bit clumsy and numb feeling.

THE NEW HEARTSTONE: In the absence of the prince, the Heart of Stone will be taking over the remains of the Prince's realm and preventing it from collapsing into void. As it turns out, the manor had been an earth elemental all along - a form of Wyld Fae almost on par to the Prince and Ringmaster themselves. How the Heart of Stone was enslaved is a long story presumably, but the Ringmaster considers it to be a sign of the Prince's own depravity. The Heart will be allowing visitors for the first couple days of this period through the portal, but keep in mind you are essentially just walking around on its body. At least the realm has a floor, now, instead an endless abyss surrounding it.

"Not at the moment," Connie replied. She'd already visited Gongenzaka, which was her first course of action, and she'd already mostly gotten her setup in Steven's trailer. Their trailer? Still weird.

"I'm just trying to learn as much about the carnival as I can, especially since I'm a Patrol."

"Oh, are you patrol?" He raises his brows, surprised. If she is a human, she looks young. An age he didn't think Taimi should have been on the field at. That Waine was, but maybe she's braver than him.

"Are you already an experienced defender?"

"For certain definitions of 'experienced.' And 'defender.'"

She was an expert tactician if you counted beating Colonization IV on Hard difficulty. She once successfully held off an assault from a force ten times her size while holed up in a single castle for two years before her host arrived to break the siege. Nightmare difficulty had so far eluded her, but in her defense, the stats on enemy armies in that were extremely unfair, and enemy leaders were unrealistically aggressive.

Colonization IV definitely does not count.

Well, at least she's patrol and not a mercenary. There's less 'stick your face into the immediate unknown danger of every world we visit' in that regard.

"Hm. Well, there are training grounds if you feel you need to brush up on any of your skills." He gestures to himself. "I am Syrlya. I also serve under the Warden as a bouncer, and I am one of the nightrunners for the carnival."

"I'm Connie Mahaswaran," she said politely.

"I've heard of the nightrunners-" Her face betrayed a certain amount of excitement.

"What do you have to do to join?"

Syrlya raises a brow. That's not the question he expected in response to being a nightrunner.

"Er--" He shifts on his feet, unfolding his arms as he stares uncertainly at her for a moment. Technically he should defer her to Lambert for this, but Lambert's all manners of screwed up right now and he'd rather not make him have to deal with an enthusiastic kid about it.

"I believe all of us were assigned to them when we signed their contract? As far as I know, we all have some manner of combative or scouting experience already."

"Oh, okay," Connie replies. She thought that 'nightrunner' might be a more unofficial designation, since the naming system seemed to differ from 'Patrol.' It was more evocative, like a secret society or order.

"Whats the weirdest thing you guys have found when we 'land' in a new area?" She had no idea what verb to use for a space-traveling carnival. She doesn't even know what form of locomotion they used. If it was some kind of transposition, then maybe the verb would be 'pop'?

"That, you may wish to ask one of the other nightrunners about. I have only been with the carnival thirty days or so."

For him, Greysol was the weirdest. But Lambert has a story to tell him earlier, and he's doubtful that qualifies as the worst or least understandable place they've visited before.

"Who are the others?" She didn't know a lot of people yet. She wondered if anyone she'd actually met so far was a nightrunner, actually. She hadn't made a habit of asking other people what their jobs were.

"Lambert is the Nightrider, though he's currently injured and on rest. Then, besides myself, there is Strange, 9S, and Scout. 9S is also recent to the carnival, though if you ask him he might find all of this strange."

He has no idea yet that their numbers have expanded one monster hunter and a cat. "The carnival is a fairly small group."

"Oh, I've met 9S! I met his-" She pauses for a moment, wondering how to describe his relationship to 2B based on the limited interactions she'd had with them and the lack of forethought to ask about their relationship. Or perhaps 'lack of forethought' was more 'hesitancy to pry.'

"I also met another android at the ball, although she turned out not to be real."

Guess who bailed on the ball before it finished and completely missed that some of the people were illusions: it's Syrlya.

"What do you mean by 'not real'?" Did the Prince not actually kidnap all those people? That's actually a relief if so.

sworntothesword: (what)

[personal profile] sworntothesword 2017-11-23 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm not sure if I actually have an intention behind the word so much just passing on the phrase that's been given to me-" she started, feeling the need to put a disclaimer on a term that she didn't fully understand or even necessarily vouch for with her limited understanding of the topic.

"But I think it means they were more like illusions or figments rather than the actual people? But they were realistic enough, I think. Perhaps like reflections or echoes of real people."

"I hadn't even realized." Granted, he was also completely drugged at the time, so he supposes he can give himself a pass for failing to identify those illusions.

"That's good to hear. I was certain that not everyone there was with the carnival now.. but all of you who were real are?"
sworntothesword: (unsure)

[personal profile] sworntothesword 2017-11-27 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
"I suppose that follows," Connie replies. The prince was defeated and his mansion destroyed, so there was no way that he was still holding on to anyone.

"Was there... someone you met that disappeared?"

[personal profile] chronosynthesis 2017-11-27 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh--" Syrlya waves his hand, dismissive. "No, no one of importance. But the less people to be hurt by the Prince's actions, the better."

And that includes strangers getting randomly kidnapped to his ball. He's just altruistically concerned about what the Prince might have done to anyone.

That's hard to follow up on. 'Glad no one you knew was kidnapped,' seemed awkward, while 'i'm glad you think kidnapping is bad' sounded sarcastic.

"Y-yeah." Dang, that sounded lame.

"I think it was just me and Cole? I haven't met anyone else who stayed from the ball."
