MOON WALKING↴![]() The journey to the moon only takes a blink of an eye, but it leaves the carnival far away beneath you. The second moon can be seen on the peripheral, massive compared to its usual view. At least when the holidays start out, there will be no notable wildlife on the moon, though this is something you can talk to the Ringmaster about if you think it needs a change. It sounds like this is the first time she's used it in quite a while - it probably needs some dusting off! Claim your cabins, and proceed to... well, do whatever you want! There is no rush and little obligation, besides to enjoy yourself. For real, this time. She promises there will be no vampires. Or, at least, none that don't already work for the carnival. ► CABINS: Living arrangements are character choice for this event, and there are a variety of cabins of various sizes, mostly built to house 2-6 people, though you can fit more in if you squish. They are all made of wood and of a rustic design - no fancy modern furniture, here! Each building is housed with a fireplace and the needed amenities. You can pick up materials to cook with the private kitchens if you like. Theoretically, you could spend the whole holiday sequestered away, watching the snow fall. Some of them also have outdoor hot tubs available! ► ACTIVITIES: Activities are mostly going to be character driven, though there will be some large group games like bingo and maybe a poker tournament happening at some point in one of the festival halls. Otherwise, there is a lot to offer: skiing, snowboarding, hiking, ice sculpting, snowball fights - it goes on! If you'd like to run a winter activity, just let the mods know, and we will get the word out there for you. ► FEASTING: Every day isn't a full-out feast because that would get a bit unhealthy, but there will be a number of specific feast events over the holidays where everyone is encouraged to let out their inner hedonist and stuff themselves. There will be one big feast per week, with smaller but also delicious meals offered in between. The feast dates will be B12, B18, and B24. There's also plenty of alcohol available for anyone who wants it. ► SHOPPING: As mentioned in the planning post, there is a massive market being run by the World Walker Caravan! The Ringmaster has given everyone 1250 credits to spend on items, but there is a caveat - must spend at least 500 of those credits on gifts for other people. And it better be a good one, if you only buy one! (She will ask that you do not buy her presents, however. She appreciates the sentiment, but it seems sort of silly buying her things with her own money! If you'd like to gift her, please have it be something more personal or handmade, but you are not obligated to get her anything at all.) ► TREATMENTS: The beginning of the holidays will also be about the time that the emergency Medical Team will have finalized their treatments for the Prince's poisoning. Watch out for further information on that - and make sure to get treated if you are suffering from petrification or poison induced illness! The holidays will be a lot more fun that way. |

"It is the natural state of your world and yet you wish to regulate it? Or the beasts that are destroying your peoples?" The two were intertwined from what Syrlya said, but the goals could be separated.

But that's the same question Strange faced Syrlya with, as well, and he shakes his head. "It is hard for me to describe how much magic is building up in Tyria right now. We have never seen so much of it before."
He waves a hand in a vague gesture. "Magic is inherently volatile, and too much of it is... toxic. A decline into sickness and death if it does not just twist and tear you apart." He bites his lip once. "People have survived the rise of Elder Dragons. We won't survive destroying our world. That's why we need another way to stabilize it."
It's a rock and a hard place. And someone has to have figured it out, right? He hasn't hard of any other world having Elder Dragons, but he has heard of volatile and dangerous magic.

Syrlya's world is another matter, however. The dragons of Thedas weren't a threat to the stability of their world. That Syrlya's had that much at risk meant the man had his work cut out for him though Solas wondered if there weren't alternate paths to take. The Veil had been Solas' solution, but it was not one he would advocate for given his current goals.
"Then I wish you good fortunes in your research," he returns with a slight lift of his glass.

"If I may ask... does magic in Thedas not carry an inherent danger in itself?" People fear it, but people can fear it for many things besides what magic itself is, especially if its use isn't as wide spread as in Tyria. There, they may not fear the dangers of magic enough.

"It depends on the user. Those that wield magic and are unable to fully control themselves can find themselves at risk as those that live in the Fade seek ways into our realm," he answers. It's clear he places the blame on inexperience and lack of education, in many ways. "The fear is that a mage will be at risk for possession and if a spirit has become corrupted, they become dangerous."
And thus, the fear. Well, the fear beyond that it was a power that not everyone held. With power always came the fear of it and what it could do.

"So spirits use mages as a way to get into Thedas? Is that... is there no way to prevent it? What draws them to try and leave the Fade in the first place?"
Corrupted or not, some other people trying to hi-jack someone's body sounds utterly alarming to begin with. Have they truly never found a way to handle it?

Again, it came down to a matter of what each nation thought was 'best' for managing magic. The limitations of the circles, the use of the rite of tranquility, and the brutality that came with much of it--all were an attempt to control a power that many feared. Possession seemed to be the worst outcome for any mage learning to wield their powers.
"Spirits are named by what they represent. Compassion, justice, wisdom--they embody these values. It is when they are corrupted by those of us they meet that their understanding of themselves changes and poses a threat."

"So it is a dangerous relationship. Can these spirits be spoken to or warded away? Have people really been so afraid of magic for so long that no one has found a tangible solution to it, or is magic in Thedas young?"
He can't imagine a world where magic isn't studied. Sometimes dangerously, yes, but never ignored. Never feared out of ignorance.
It might be they did not fear enough out of ignorance.

The fear is that anything met in the Fade could be a demon in disguise and a mage susceptible to possession is dealt either death or cut from magic entirely," he returns and it's clear in his tone he considers both options much the same. "It is my understanding that those who research spirits are kept under close watch."
But it is not something he has ever had to deal with personally. Staying far from that and remaining an apostate had been the easier alternative.

Still, it sounds like nobody has a real solution to the whole 'possession' thing. He still doesn't approve of the way Solas has described their societies handle it, but it isn't a threat to take lightly, either. Rock and a hard place.
"It sounds as if anyone who practices magic is kept under close watch." Except, apparently, apostates. "What about yourself? You don't sound as though you fear those spirits."
Either he's entirely confident about not getting possessed, or there's something else.

So no, he has no fear of becoming possessed. He handled himself just fine walking among spirits and often preferred them for company.

"I don't doubt that. I hope your understanding finds a better solution than fear to cope with the dangers other mages seem to have mingling with spirits." Because that isn't a fate he would wish on anyone.

He gestures vaguely with his hand to the others around them. "I would not keep you the entire evening." And he was certain he would see Syrlya again, somewhere more suited to magical demonstrations.
