FAERIE TALES↴![]() Though the carnival will be performing for its guests in the first week, they are welcome to search the Athenaeum while they are off duty during that time. The manifestations of story characters will be out in full force during performance week, with animals, people, objects, and even locations growing out from various tales. Most are distracting at worst, and will be curious to check out the carnival. Some, however, can be as dangerous as they were in their stories of origin. You know what to do. ► IT'S TIME TO ROLEPLAY: The best way to deal with book ghosts is to follow their narrative to its logical conclusion - turn the tables, work the story so it ends in your favour! Naturalistic and narratively satisfying plotting will have the manifestations following your lead. However, push too hard and introduce too many plot holes, inconsistencies, or illogical plot twists, and they will reject your reality utterly, becoming quite aggressive in the process. You can also use your natural abilities and powers to fight them in a traditional sense, but in the Ringmaster's experience, it's best to fight reality benders by bending reality right back at them. If you aren't careful, it's possible to be dragged fully into a story's reality, and then things get really messed up. ► IT'S ALSO TIME TO READ: The carnival came here for a purpose, and that purpose is to research. Specifically, the Ringmaster is looking for information on the Queen's Miracles - the set of ancient fae artifacts that the Blue Rose is one of. The carnival needs these artifacts to defend itself, but nobody knows where they've been for thousands of years. That's what the books are for. However, nothing is stopping you from pursuing knowledge for personal reasons. The halls are open to your perusal, and only your heart can guide you to the book you truly seek. "It's something the library keeps doing," the witcher finally answers, teeth gritted. After a moment, he lifts his head and sniffs the air warily, catching the scent of cooking meat. 9S's senses can probably pick up much more than that-- three men gathered around the fire, and for some reason, a hell of a lot of--
"Oinnnnnkkkk!" A large pig has just shoved its face into 9S's legs from behind, snuffling him rather vigorously.
no subject
9S stumbles forward, this time actually dropping the book with a loud thud.
"Hey there, little guy." What? The pig is little, compared to the ones he's used to. But nothing of what's around them appears to be biological. At a loss on what to do, 9S continues to talk to the pig. "What are you doing here? I don't have any bait on me..."
no subject
"Do you usually carry pig bait with you?" Is pig bait even a thing? Well, it doesn't matter. "Quit playing with that thing and let's figure out how to get out of here."
Going for humans seems like the smart thing, so ... that's where Lambert heads, regardless of whether 9S follows or not.

But apparently 9S is missing something important and the pig insistently shoves the back of 9S' knees with its snout, squealing when 9S turns to frown down at the 'animal'.
"What the heck do you want?" He doesn't speak pig!
no subject
Which is worse, in his learned opinion. For all 9S's attestations that they're not real, they seem convincing enough as the three bandits look up at their approach, one of them wiping off his mouth on the back of his hand. A half-eaten pig is nestled in the embers of the fire.
"Hey, strangers!" Despite their rough-looking demeanor (and a grin that reveals several missing teeth) they're apparently a cheerful bunch.
"Want a bite to eat? There's plenty to go around." One of them lifts a chunk of meat on bone, glistening in the firelight, but before Lambert or 9S can respond it's interrupted by another man rushing in, clutching at his hat.
"They ate Yagoda!" he moans miserably, stamping his feet. "I told them not eat Yagoda, but they did!"
no subject
9S glances between the men eating and the new stranger. Androids have no use for consuming the flesh of animals, but that's something that humans did. It doesn't make sense to him why this man is so upset about it. A pig's a pig, isn't it?
"What's wrong with eating the pig?"
i also couldn't remember enough about this quest so we're winging it
The bandits around the fire, though, are less amused. Clearly, this isn't the first time they've run into this one, and one reaches down to heft up a sword.
"Beat it, you little fucker," one scowls. "We've warned you before."
The beleaguered villager turns to the heroes of the tale, pleadingly, lips trembling.

"Wait wait wait! There's no need to get violent!"
Would he be able to lift a hand against any of these humans? He'd been working on trying to resovle the issue with his programming, but...
...Wait, what's he thinking? These aren't even real people!
"Scratch that. Pod, engage program R010. And uh, aim it downwards so we don't damage the books."
< Affirmative >
Sure enough, Pod 153 floats upwards, its boxy 'head' splitting open to reveal panels that burn with a bright light as it charges its lasers. It doesn't take long for it to unleash a laser on the 'bandits'.
no subject
They do, however, know what that looks like.
"Sorcery!" One yells, getting to his feet and brandishing his sword. "Cut his tongue out before he can cast another spell, lads!"
With that, the bandits rush towards them, and Lambert's just about had enough of this farce.
"Screw this!" he snarls, stepping forward and running the first bandit right through the chest with his sword. Unlike 9S's lasers, apparently, this registers as very real harm, the bandit chokes and gurgles as blood starts to soak the front of his ratty tunic.
no subject
At first he feels almost physical pain at the sight of Lambert stabbing one of the bandits, jumping back in alarm. But then he remembers these bandits aren't real, so his alarm is quickly replaced by indignation.
"What the hell!? Why does your sword work? That's so unfair!"
< Hypothesis: the human-like beings are only affected by weaponry containing metals >
"Yeah?" 9S swings his arm, remotely bringing his sword down on the second bandit in an overhead strike.
no subject
Fortunately for 9S, the sword finds its second target without any trouble, cleaving sharply into the bandit and leaving him dead on the ground. The last bandit is dispatched in much the same way, leaving cartoonishly bright splotches on the logs they were sitting on as well as the remnants of the food they were eating. Lambert doesn’t seem to feel too bothered about it, bending down to wipe his sword clean on a jerkin before putting it back in its scabbard.
Yontek, on the other hand, just collapses by the roast pig and blubbers uselessly. From the witcher’s stormy expression, his temper is dangerously close to fraying.
“I don’t want to be stuck in here playing pretend forever,” he snaps at 9S. “Help me figure this out.”
