⇨ THE ATHENAEUM
Who: Everyone!
When: Day 47 - Day 58 ish
Where: The Athenaeum
What: The carnival arrives at book world. First week, they'll be performing for magical manifestations of book characters. Second week, it's time to hunt (for books, in the library.) Around Day 58 some stuff will occur.
Warnings: Reading is mandatory.

FAERIE TALES↴![]() Though the carnival will be performing for its guests in the first week, they are welcome to search the Athenaeum while they are off duty during that time. The manifestations of story characters will be out in full force during performance week, with animals, people, objects, and even locations growing out from various tales. Most are distracting at worst, and will be curious to check out the carnival. Some, however, can be as dangerous as they were in their stories of origin. You know what to do. ► IT'S TIME TO ROLEPLAY: The best way to deal with book ghosts is to follow their narrative to its logical conclusion - turn the tables, work the story so it ends in your favour! Naturalistic and narratively satisfying plotting will have the manifestations following your lead. However, push too hard and introduce too many plot holes, inconsistencies, or illogical plot twists, and they will reject your reality utterly, becoming quite aggressive in the process. You can also use your natural abilities and powers to fight them in a traditional sense, but in the Ringmaster's experience, it's best to fight reality benders by bending reality right back at them. If you aren't careful, it's possible to be dragged fully into a story's reality, and then things get really messed up. ► IT'S ALSO TIME TO READ: The carnival came here for a purpose, and that purpose is to research. Specifically, the Ringmaster is looking for information on the Queen's Miracles - the set of ancient fae artifacts that the Blue Rose is one of. The carnival needs these artifacts to defend itself, but nobody knows where they've been for thousands of years. That's what the books are for. However, nothing is stopping you from pursuing knowledge for personal reasons. The halls are open to your perusal, and only your heart can guide you to the book you truly seek. Check the plot post to see what's allowed, and sign up to find plot info or other important game information below. |

⇨ INVESTIGATIONS
Like before, you must be specific about what your character is doing to find new information, and you must keep your requests to one or two actions per comment. No big laundry lists of things your character is doing - it is much easier to handle taking it one topic at a time.

⇨ LOOK FOR BOOKS HERE
Fill out the form below to have your character submitted to find valuable game plot or magic related information. As stated, information about your personal canon or stuff not pertaining to the game plot doesn't need to be rolled for, unless you are trying to find something innately valuable, like a book with magic spells or anything that could lead in in-game power. If you want to look for that, submit a search here, and dice will be rolled to see what you get.
For plot information we will be using RNG to determine who receives which pre-written manuscripts with potentially plot relevant information. Some are about a page in length, many will be shorter. All have some pertinence to the plot, but it may not be clear what it is. Try not to dump all of your characters on here at once, and stick to one character until other people have had a go. If you are looking for information about NPCs, submit that here and we'll RNG to see how successful you are.
ROSE QUEEN/THE BLUE ROSE

Necromancy Books
Lambert | OTA
In general, once they're given leave to wander the halls, Lambert isn't difficult to find among the shelves and bookstacks. Clearly, though, he's not here for pleasure -- not if the sheathed sword strapped to his back is any indication. Though he's hardly disrespectful or rough with the books, mindful of the Ringmaster's injunction to respect their host, he also isn't sitting down with most of them. His lips move soundlessly as he reads the often-illegible titles, running fingers along the spines, and he'll occasionally crack one open and skim a few pages before scowling and returning it. It's not what he's looking for.
As soon as he senses he's not alone, though, he speaks without looking.
"Find anything interesting yet?"
2. Lost in a Good Book
The library's halls are vast, packed with more books than anyone can hope to read in a lifetime -- or several lifetimes. Ghosts drift among the shelves, curious specters that Carnival workers would have seen coming to the Carnival during performance nights, but here they're mostly just shadows among the dust and paper.
The quiet lends itself to contemplation. However, that's suddenly broken by the sound of boots pounding against the floor, and before long, Lambert skids into sight, panting and harried.
"Move!" he snaps, at whoever's unfortunate enough to be in the vicinity. "Get out of her before--"
The witcher doesn't get a chance to finish before the hallway behind him suddenly begins spilling out scenery, creeping over the ground and walls and past the witcher's feet. Lambert whirls as the library around them abruptly disappears, plunging him and whoever else he's with into twilight swamps, weather-worn ruins, snowy mountains, a deep, quiet forest, or the midst of a bustling, quiet village.
"Shit!" The witcher shouts, throwing his hands up. "Not this again!"
3. Wildcard
Hit up my plotting post if you want a specific scenario!
1!
"Interesting, yes. Useful? Maybe not. The top book is for you, by the way."
The top book is a mixology book, about how to make mixed drinks and cocktails. Granted, half of the recipes involve alcohols and liqueurs that neither of the men have ever heard of, but Strange 100% grabbed it based on the cover and the first two pages. Underneath it, should Lambert care to look, is a book written in an odd language, a book about England, another book about England, and one book written in Ye Olde English about magic.
Of course, any talking about why Strange wants Lambert to learn how to make mixed drinks is going to fall by the wayside as Strange just keeps talking. "Did you know they let women vote in the future? Or, at least, one England does. A wonderful change, if I may say so."

Jonathan Strange | ota!
Strange has co-opted a relatively open space for his act. They need to perform for the books? Well, he might as well perform here, in the library, where others can watch. A few book ghost specters of all sorts linger around the shelves: a teenage girl with an intensely improbable hairstyle, an otter wearing a waistcoat, a literal talking snowman, and so on. It's an odd assortment. Strange's fingers brush against one of the bookshelves as he murmurs something under his breath. The bookshelf starts to flower. Tree-like branches grow from the wood of the bookshelf, as small pink buds sprout from the end of the branches. At the same time, an ivy of some sort snakes across the horizontal shelves. By the time Strange steps back from the bookshelf, the ghosts are looking at him with rapt attention.
"Well then," he starts. He looks over at the bookshelf with a slight look of surprise, as if he can't believe he did what he just did. "What shall I do next?"
early on: the world's shittiest larper
Strange hates birds now. This is mostly due to the fact that he's currently being accosted by a black swan. And this terrible dinosaur bird with it's six foot wingspan keeps squeaking at him. It would be kind of adorable if he weren't cornered by this very insistent bird and it's sharp pointy beak. The damn thing's pecked him a few times already! Thankfully, through the power of narrative bullshit, Strange understands what the animal is saying.
"I only know the basics of transfiguration magic and certainly nothing as complex as a transformation to human form," Strange complains, as he looks down at the swan. The swan hisses in annoyance. "What about a horse? I turned those mice into horses, surely that would work for you." The swan honks in disapproval, causing Strange to glower at it even more. This isn't going anywhere fast.
Needless to say, this argument is happening smack dab in the middle of one of the library aisles. Wanted to get that book? I'm sorry, there's a magician arguing with a bird in your way.
post day 50: strange writes fanfic
The Scribe will trade stories for stories. Strange has written a book and is currently working on another. He's got this shit. Strange has currently taken over a large table in the Athenaeum: books of all sorts are scattered all across the table, like Strange followed his heart and grabbed literally anything his heart pointed him in the direction of. There's stuff on the fae, there's stuff on England, there's stuff on mirrors? These books are organized in some sort of order but whatever the order is isn't apparent at first glance.
There's a messenger bag at his feet and papers spread out over the table. A mirrored amulet, Peridot's Solstice present to Strange, sits on the table as well. Pencil in hand, Strange is currently scribbling something, obviously caught up with a burst of inspiration as he writes. However, the inspiration stops as Strange pauses for a moment, thinking. To anyone in the nearby vicinity, he asks: "What's a shade of brown that's like chestnut, but a little bit darker?"
wildcard!
Strange spends a solid 80% of his time with books, only coming back to the carnival to eat and sleep. Feel free to run into him anywhere in the Athenaeum! Hit me up at my plotting post if you want something specific. Check out his stories of exceedingly creepy magic here.
Fanfic
He definitely assumed Strange is better at filtering out through this stuff, which is why as he crosses the table he stops to look through the titles that he's already pulled down. He picks up the first book on Fae, but doesn't open it as he considers Strange's question.
"Uuuh..." He rolls his eyes up, brow furrowing in thought. "Dirt? Coffee?"

Peridot | ota kinda?
A lot of this has been hinted at in past conversations, so nothing here is particularly earth-shattering (eeyyyyy), but. Yeah. Peridot is around the library helping Steven with his research and doing some research of her own, so anyone can feel free to confront her about this information either there or back at her trailer, if they feel like doing so.
B. Wildcard me if you want. Other than that I'll be putting closed starters in the replies to this.
wildcard!
She's changed, he knows that now, someone can be wrong and then right. He was wrong and then right. But there's something about all this that aggravates Cole more than he wants to admit. Peridot seems nice. But he knew if he was there, he would have been with the Steven trying to stop her as well. So, Cole's just going to start up a conversation by appearing out of nowhere in creepy Cole fashion.
In his defense, there's nothing he can really knock on to tell Peridot he's coming. Cole's realized that much, he just hasn't realized that 'telling people you're arriving' applies to every situation and not just entering a building.
"You wanted to break the sky," Cole grumbles, looking over at Peridot with a frown. He's sitting directly on a nearby table as he looks over at Peridot from beneath his hat. "Hundreds of voices, worried, confused, and you helped make it."

[The setting leaves much to be desired for Yuya's usual acrobatic stunts, what with navigating tight shelves and tables instead of bars and open space. Still, a good entertainer knows how to be flexible and Yuya's not about to give up that easily. He's had to heavily modify his routine with juggling and navigating tricks on a balance ball as he collects small audiences down the halls.
When not performing for the books, Yuya's reading them himself--or at least skimming them. He's making an effort to find any useful information, although without as much success. Sometimes he stops moving so quickly through the shelves when he finds a book of interest, however, and stalls in place as he engrosses himself in the story. He might end up blocking the shelf if he's not nudged.]
[The Shelves are Alive]
[It's obvious pretty quickly that the ghosts from the books have a very limited habit. Yuya still takes a few before he finally catches on, when a few conversations hit bizarre dead ends. But even so he ends up entertaining them as he passes by, talking as though they really are a person, and not just a figurative of magic text.
Sometimes they're a little more insistent, though, and anyone else nearby may find themselves getting accosted by the same spirits as the scenery envelops the hallway, or Yuya calls from across the shelve to please, help.]
((Every book setting for this prompt will be different, so go ahead and leave an open response and I'll tailor one!))
[Closed to Gongenzaka]
[At some point, Yuya's perusing the shelves side by side with Gongenzaka, glancing over the various titles and occasionally pausing to pull a book out and crack it open to a random page to get the gist of its contents.
This means, of course, at some point he ends up disturbing one of the book ghosts. He doesn't even get the chance to read the page before a figure springs out of it, making Yuya drop the book and jump back with a yelp. It's a devilish looking figure, tilting its head back and forth as the scene around them starts to get enveloped in some sort of forest with winding paths instead.] Whoa!
[Wildcard]
[Yuya has an open story about his past incarnation, but there can be other stories around if you're interested in finding anything in particular. He's also reading books in an attempt to help find information, so he can find anything about your character as well!
Basically hit me with anything.]
the shelves are alive
And there are some things he never expected to find in here.
When he encounters Yuya and the rapidly changing scenery, there's a book cradled in his arm as he looks between Yuya and the spirits. Right, the same thing happened with him and Lambert...]

GONGENZAKA | OTA | All Event Unless Marked
[Entering the Athenaeum was far more than entering a library. When he woke, of course, he prepared to begin his usual morning 'leg training'. A jog about the Carnival perimeter, with Marishi at his side, ending in a crossing over the lake. The moment he had exited the tent and come toward the Carnival's main grounds however, it was impossible not to notice the ceiling far above-not to mention, the many, many...MANY books.
Ahh, he finds himself thinking, ducking a swooping book-spirit bat as he carries on with an altered form of his jog. So this is what was meant by their coming search for clues.] Hmm! [he murmurs aloud, Marishi keeping a steady, calm pace, beside him.] So we are to look through this then...
[The cheetah, maned, shining, and wearing one of her 'manliness' t-shirts, chuckles.] Well, if that's the case, we might as well see if there's anything for us to learn from as well, wouldn't you agree?
[Naturally, being so boldly made aware of his inner intentions has the great 'taur stumbling and choking as his daemon laughs.] A-AUH-..!
[It is an interesting run, to say the least.]
[Off In The Fiction Section]
[There is without a doubt, truth to Marishi's words however-outside his typical patrol shift, Gongenzaka spends many an hour searching through the books of the Athenaeum, rifling through book after book. Of course, occasionally he's got his nose rather literally stuck in a book somehow relating to chakras...but it is with a dry and half-lidded frown that he looks up from one in particular, as the understanding of his book being fiction and not non-fiction comes forth.
Specifically, this is because there is now some sort of elemental chakra beast ninja thing looming behind him.] ...Is this truly the time... [he mutters, as if the thing behind him were merely an annoyance.
Perhaps the 'protagonist' could use a hand.]
[OF TEETH AND CRIMSON | PICK YOUR TALE]
[Gongenzaka's stories take the form of Ballads; request one you'd like to see a portion of, and I can reply with a section here. Alternatively, perhaps you might catch Gongenzaka reading one in particular...as the setting around him becomes akin to a stone, underground labyrinth.]
[WILDCARD]
[Beyond the above, Gongenzaka will be patrolling the realm constantly, sniffing about (sometimes literally) for either books, or someone in need of a hand. Feel free to tag with anything, or plot with me!]
Teeth and Crimson
It's dramatic and gripping, and he knows it isn't the information they're looking for but he finds himself reading the poem in full anyway. And... again, when there's something similar about the scene. Gongenzaka described something similar happening to him.
So he pulls out more of the scrolls and sits down to review them, lips pursed in a tight frown and brow furrowed as he looks for similarities between them--in the pictures and the words.]

CARLY | OTA | All Event Unless Marked
[It was with a loud and cheerful 'whoo-hoo!' that Carly had initially entered the Athenaeum, and she had yet to lose that cheer by any significant amount. While she certainly had a bit of a 'moment' on the second day, she quickly pulled herself from her gloom-and so, aside from her time in the wardrobe tent on the job, she carries on her research and snooping.
...Mostly.] Ooooo... [Click, goes her camera, as she snaps a picture of...a picture?] That looks like something we could work with for costumes...
[Wardrobe Research never ends. Of course, at other points-]
Hmmn, maybe that could be helpful, [She'll mutter to herself, constantly flipping through one book after the other. Occasionally she pauses and again clicks with the camera, but mostly she's stooped over something with a focused stare.
Or, well-] BFHG-
[Bumping into someone with said book. Whoops?]
[SHADOWS - DAY 48]
[When she finds the book, she doesn't even realize it could be relevant. Instead, snapping a picture of the book-less page so that the slip of paper can be placed As She Found It, she stares at the image on the screen and grins.] I knew it-! [She cheers, scratching Nuna the Marowak's head in her cheer.] 'A soul is both the light and the shadow it casts-', I knew learning from that book wouldn't be totally hopeless~!
And the Ringmaster even gave me that cloak, so honestly, [she mutters, pouting with the camera. She pauses, however, as she looks at the rest of what she caught.] ...Eh? ...'Good and Evil are inextricable, they thought. They are one in the same'... ...hahh, what is that even supposed to-
[And then, she's abruptly pulling a face, grimacing deeply as the rest of the writing meets her eyes.] W...'When even light invites darkness, then both must be found unworthy...the mortal soul would be pur-' H-HEHHH!?
W-What, purged!?
[help]
[THE FEATHERED-MAIDEN MEETS HER END | PICK YOUR TALE]
[Carly's stories are found scattered-photograph cards with images upon them. Some come in sets-others...not so much. But occasionally Carly herself may find one while flipping through a few books, before hurriedly hiding it where she found it-hoping none had seen. Sometimes instead she simply stares, confused-recognizing the art, but not the scene.
But other times, creatures from the tales rise upward, looming above-and Carly turns very slowly indeed, when such things as darkened shadowy birds, or 'charming' men with one eye covered, begin to appear.
(Choose the story you wish to find, or wish to catch Carly reading; alternatively, characters can fight either Aslla Piscu, or the Story!Version of Divine, her murderer, if they wish)]
[WILDCARD]
[Carly is rather dedicatedly seeking out information to help her to learn Shadowspeak, or at least translate it easier. She's become rather stubborn about this. Still, in addition to being found in her usual position in the Wardrobe Tent, or in her General Location-Based position of BOOKHUNTING, she can also be caught dragging Nuna-her marowak-away from a few bookspirits it may have agitated. Hit her with whatever!]
SHADOWS - Day 48
Well, it mostly isn't. Carly is sort of an enigma, to be honest. He had written her off like he's written off most people--as simultaneously well above him and absolutely not worth his time. The Great Hunt didn't really change that; useful, even powerful, magic and good aim are not exceptionally rare qualities, especially in the Carnival.
But then, with her personal interest in his affairs...
Anyway, it's the sound of her voice going shrill and loud that makes him flinch, full-body and cringing--he doesn't drop the book in his claws, but they definitely poke a couple of indiscreet holes in the pages.
He shuts the tome firmly, holding a thumb in his place as he weaves in and out of the shelves to find her.

REIRA | OTA
[It's enormous.
The most books she'd ever seen had been, until now, the Library at the Prince's Manor. It had been a plethora of things she could scarcely read, which a few of the then-servants had helped her pick a book or two from before Strange's own suggestions.
From there her only other experience with so many things was the Caravan's selection, and then the telephone booth filled with books to swap from. And neither of them stood to light even a single candle to this.
Reira wanders the Athenaeum with nothing but wonder in her eyes, and she is followed closely behind by a waddling eagle barely an inch or so smaller than herself. Perhaps if she thought about it, she'd have come on her bike-so large is the place that it takes even hours just to wander. But that is for later. For now, she looks about amazed and taking pictures, when she has yet to even open one.
Of course, later in even the first week outside her working hours, she has more than a few books opened. She seems to bother with only reading a few pages of each though-at which point, having gravitated toward the tome on nothing but intuition, she proceeds to snap one by one, a picture of each page with her polaroid camera.
The results are...relatively small images of the pages of course, but the words are still clear-especially if one has a magnifier. Of course, she still needs lighting for that, so as soon as anyone peers over her shoulder, she's turning upward with a start.
(And if it isn't you bothering her, it may well be the large scarlet eagle ferrying small bags of polaroid photos back to her trailer-likely coming mere inches away from various people's heads while it does so.)]
[IT'S IN A BOOK | CHOOSE THE TALE]
[Reira has three stories-though they are not necessarily bound together. Scattered through the Athenaeum, the tales of Matryona-a name which, go figure, means 'Matryoshka'-may not strike a chord of familiarity with Reira's caretakers and comrades...but there is something about the look of the little girl in the artwork that simply resonates. Regardless, there's a strong chance of finding one while standing only a few feet away from her. She certainly isn't finding anything about herself, in any case...
Choose the story, or section of story, and go-!]
[A READING RAINBOW]
[Click-! She doesn't know what it is that she found, but as with so many of the books that Reira has been looking at during her stay in the Athenaeum thus far, Reira finds that it just feels like 'a good idea' to take notes. And even if notes are in fact photographs, she takes as many off the page she's found as possible. The images develop slowly however, and Reira holds the image with relative diligence, stable and quiet.]
Ah-!
[Which is when she hears the...Pirate?]
Arrrrrr lass...I see you've found a fine treasure! Hurry it over then, or it'll be your life...
[.....................Yep that's a pirate. A few pirates, actually. Lots of pirates?
Somehow, stuffing the image in one of her pockets, she finds herself not quite taking her usual way out.] Y...You....
[An encouraging screech from her eagle far above (not to mention a peep from the sparrow and daemon on her opposing shoulders), and Reira tries a more...Ficticiously Bent spin on her counter.]
You'll never...um- You'll never take me alive..! [She recites-and she swears at least one of the pirates in the back of the crowd shouted a muffled 'oh!! Good choice of dialogue!!', but she can't quite hear over the fact where, story lines aside, she still has to actually run.
Which is what she's doing.] HHH-aaAHH-!
[The Athenaeum seems to be borrowing a few setting pieces, if the fact that a seven year old just swung past on a rope off a ship's mast didn't give that away. Though given the crowd, maybe it was a vine instead....or a cable...
...Could be anything really, just get out of the way or help her fight-!!]
[WILDCARD]
[Reira might not be the most naturally creative of people, but she's an avid reader now that the option is there-and she's following the whim of the Athenaeum wherever it takes her. So quite literally, you could run into her anywhere! Or her eagle, or her daemon (which will likely be either a bearded vulture, or a fox, in this particular zone), or her sparrow...
She's travelling with Company-so hit her up!]
Wildcard
Books and her just didn't mix. It was like water and something that... didn't mix with water. (She didn't pay much attention during school, either.)
The point was, she didn't like any of this.
Until a miracle happened, and she actually ended up finding the comic book section.
Salvation at last.]
Hey, over here! You gotta get a load of these.

Tyki Mikk | OTA - Prose or otherwise I will match
The Athenaeum was a wonder in itself. When he wasn't putting on performances for those that came to watch, he set out getting to work. His routine had returned to normal with the normality of waking before dawn, setting out into the vast library, returning to performances, and then out in the library again until the late hours. Mostly, he was researching into the carnival's desire, the Queen's Miracles, and would spend most of his time looking book after book for whatever information was on hand. Sometimes it was easy with the Tease spotting key words and landing on them for his inspection. Other times he would choose the manual route of standing in the air to reach the towering shelves.
It's just occasionally he'd glance at a shelf and find something a little more personal. A book here or there about Hearts that would draw him in. He would collect them, setting them into the small open bag he had at his hip, open so it didn't look like he was stealing and was just carrying it around, to read later when he found a comfortable place to sit. Lost in the knowledge at his fingertips Tyki can be found in the quiet spots of the library, tucked in corners, plopped down on the floor near a selection of books, or in the air eyeing a few on the hard to reach places. No matter the occasion there will always be a good handful of books around him with some sort of Heart theme to them. If it is early before sunrise, he might have a cup of coffee with him, later on a snack of apples or sandwiches, and in the evening tucked with a small light until closing hours.
[Heartache]
It starts with a hook that drags him in, as all stories do, and the moment he selects these particular books off the shelf there is an instant sense of regret. It was labeled 'the Heart and the Innocent', catching Tyki's eye instantly but little did he know the dangers that lurked within.
Vines lengthen outwards, spilling onto the floor around his feet. His power to choose activates immediately to avoid them but that is not his main concern and he realizes that a little too late. He's already trapped in the growing maze around him, hedges tall and staggering towards the sky, threatening to ensnare and capture anyone else that wanders into it. Cheating returns him back where he started as if the story didn't appreciate him not playing along.
Another book, 'Heart of the Ocean', later tries to drown him, finding himself aboard a ship sinking in a raging storm. Winds howl, lightning crackles around them, and the calls of panicking men jumping or being thrown overboard resound in ones ears. He doesn't know why he's suddenly tied to the mast like a mutiny was just thrown but he certainly hates this already.
The 'Burning Heart' serves him no better, suddenly plunging anyone trap in its blazing heat into a hot desert. Sand for miles blankets the area around him and he's instantly uncomfortable with the amount of clothing he's wearing. His fingers drag his shirt open, prying his collar loose. Thankfully this one seems a lot less chaotic and drops anyone caught with him right next to him out of thin air. If he looks irritable, it is because he is.
[Napping does the Heart well]
On top of performances, a trek through multiple books and story lines, and extensive reading, Tyki had never found a library so thrilling, entertaining, and yet exhausting. Despite being a generally lazy noble, when he was working he did his job well even if no real results were ever found. It's why towards the later part of the evenings Tyki could be found in a chair, on the floor, rested against a wall, or leaning against a stack of books taking a nap. Exhaustion would always set in and at times he would forget to eat. There's always a Tease nearby that'll lightly flit down to his shoulder to buzz him awake when someone approaches unless they beat the butterfly to it. Of course, napping with him is always an option and those closer to him than others might be able to convince said Tease not to wake him right away.
[Wildcard]
Got something else in mind? Hit me up on
Nap Time...
It is seeing Tyki that makes her decide it would be nice to read in company-it's pretty obvious however, that he's sleeping. She peers around the bookshelf, her eagle peers around, her giant bear of a daemon Also peers around...
....and, she makes a small 'shhh' motion, slowly taking a seat around the corner.
And then shuffling a foot or so closer to the nap zone.
And then closer.
Closer.
Her goal is to just sit against the chair and read there, without waking up Tyki.
What will probably happen is Tyki waking to a child slowly shuffling over and reading a page of a book between movements. She's Trying.

Rita Mordio | OTA, will match formats
Surprising no one, Rita absolutely loves book world.
She can be found eagerly skimming the titles lining the bookshelves, occasionally popping out a volume and flipping through it. Maybe she's even grabbed a book relating to your character.
Other times, she'll be seen sitting on the floor with a stack of books next to her, so deeply engrossed in her reading that she doesn't even seem to notice people stepping around her.
And sometimes, she might even just stop and stare, practically starry-eyed, out at the seemingly endless rows of bookshelves with a rare look of fondness and nostalgia. This place is just like home, after all.
[b: uncomfortable truths]
While Rita can be seen to be in high spirits for most of the visit, there's a chance that one may stumble across her as she seems to have just read something disturbing. She sits on the floor with a book opened in her lap, staring at the open pages, but not appearing to even be reading them.
Time passes, and she doesn't move to turn the page. She also doesn't seem to notice your character approach until they either say something or come up close to her, at which point she suddenly gives a start and a yell.
"Gah!!" Conscious of her overreaction, she of course... blames the other person. "Don't sneak up on me like that, idiot!"
[c: wildcard!]
Feel free to hit me with your own starter, and/or to have your character find any of these stories about Rita and her friends!
b
But when she passes by the second time a while later and the girl's still in the same spot as before, that's just concerning enough for Shura to check in on her, crouching a few feet away, just out of reach of any potential flailing limbs. It was best to be safe when coming up on someone like this even if Shura was doing her best not to startle her. The girl overreacts anyway, and what else is Shura supposed to do but poke fun at her?
"Sneak up on ya? Heh, you're the one sitting in middle of the floor like this. I'm surprised no one's stepped on you yet."

Ginko | OTA
Okay, you know what? You know what. Ginko has decided this is the best place they’ve visited in months. He reserves the right to revoke that, of course, just in case it gets all traumatic suddenly, but for now? It’s pretty damn great. This place has everything from legends to research texts, what’s not to like?
Right now, he’s sitting up with his back against one of the shelves, poring over a scroll held half-unrolled between his hands, seemingly absorbed in his reading. It’s not until someone gets pretty close that he’ll actually think to look up, his ears flicking. “--Oh, sorry, do you need me to move?”

Miko Nakadai | OTA
The last time Miko was in a magic library, she was being required to read about manners and history and crap by a snooty, controlling fae who ended up tricking her into committing murder and forcing the whole carnival to commit even more murder on each other. So being able to just kind of chill and flip through whatever she comes across is a definite improvement.
On the other hand, what is up with some of what she’s coming across. There are a lot of adventure stories, which is great, but also… “How much of this place is just… stories about people gettin’ into crap they shouldn’t ‘n terrible stuff happening?”
She’s feeling a LITTLE called out here, not gonna lie.
Roleplay
It doesn’t really matter where in the library she is, or what she’s reading. One way or another, one second Miko is flipping through one of the countless books, trying to decide if it’s worth actually reading in-depth, and the next, her surroundings are changing.
She looks up with a start, alarm crossing her face for a moment before being replaced with irritation. She hurriedly shoves the book back on the shelf and hops backward, ears flipping back. “--Aw, c’mon! What now?”

susan | ota
Normally Susan is pretty happy anywhere he goes, but normally he doesn't go to places that are literally filled with books. He doesn't have the patience for books, doesn't really have an interest in books... But at the same time, it's something new to explore, and maybe if he actually looks he'll find something... Well, marginally interesting, or useful. He understands they're here for a real reason, and so it doesn't hurt to take a look around and see if he can help out the cause...
But that doesn't stop him from looking distastefully at whatever tome he's picked off the shelf this time, his nose wrinkling as he tries to figure out what exactly it's about. And after flipping through it to only see more text and no pictures, well...
"Why are there so many books, anyway, why couldn't it be a 'tree' world, or an 'ask people questions' world?"
He's not really asking anyone in particular, but a response is honestly far more interesting than anything else he's up to at the moment.

Scout | OTA
Paper books. Seeing them isn't the shock it had been when Scout first joined at fourteen, fresh from a galaxy where hardly anyone does paper books anymore and any hard copies of writing are on things less prone to disintegration in water. She's been to several paper libraries since then, and in fact her clearest Portland memories not involving other carnival workers are of spending time in the libraries in that world.
This is still an awful lot of them, and there's that smell she got to know in Portland, that dusty sour note that comes with old books. All this paper absorbs sound and makes quarters seem close, even when there's plenty of space around her. Coupled with the organization system or lack therof, it's enough that while Scout is not daunted by research or being surrounded by writing, she can't help wishing they'd just get what they're after and leave.
"If this is a recipe," she says out loud, slowly, flicking rapidly through something, "then why are there this many pages about someone's relationship with their husband?"
mace it up
A hot wind scented with ozone and metal blows through and Scout raises her head sharply, glances at whoever's nearby. "Hey, we need to get... oh."
Right after the wind came a sweeping cut, the shelves and books smoothly sliding away to be replaced by a tawny plain surrounded by rolling dun hills, under a cloudy gray sky. White-armored men and top-heavy gray humanoid robots are blasting away at each other on two sides, close enough to make out individuals.
Nothing looks quite real. Edges are too crisp and defined, proportions aren't right, the ground is a flat texture, smoke is red and curls in stylized patterns, and of course there are unlimited battle droids which are so fragile that a shove is enough to destroy one. They explode or go to pieces dramatically, but a stricken trooper just falls. In the distance, a tall bald black man with a purple lightsaber is performing battlefield acrobatics.
"Come on," Scout says, edgy, her eyes flicking from droid to trooper to Jedi and then to the horizon and a small red shape on it, then back to the droids and troopers. "I think this is Dantooine, we don't want to be part of this battle."

[There are many people who are approaching the library with leisure, letting the shelves take them onto all sorts of adventures and occupying themselves with the wonders of tales at their fingertips.
Those people are not Syrlya, who is skimming the library with purpose. He's very particular about which books he pulls from the shelves, and often snaps them down quickly and puts them back in just as short of time after he can't read it, or the title was misleading, or none of the information helps. His approach is certainly more determined, which makes the haphazard, magically driven order just frustrating.] They really cannot offer us any better way to locate the information we actually want...
[It's once or twice, though, that Syrlya comes to an abrupt stop in his hurried search, though, staring at a book spine pensively before slowly drawing it off the shelves.]
[Retrieval A]
[Aside from finding information on the Queen's miracles, Syrlya's task as a nightrunner is still to keep anyone else out of trouble. The books are a lot more lively than he'd expected when they first arrived, so anytime there's a startled cry and a bizarre ghost accosting someone or scenery spilling from between the pages, he drops whatever he's currently looking for to investigate.] Is there trouble?
[Retrieval B]
[Unless he happens to be the one disturbing the wrong book, and then he's quickly gesturing for whoever's nearby to move after carelessly dropping the book on the floor.] You should leave, before--
[Well, before they're trapped in this too, but can they really make it in time?]
[Wildcard]
[Syrlya has openly available stories here, but otherwise hit me up if you want to find something alternative!]

Lambert is going through the shelves in much the same way Syrlya is -- for efficiency's sake, he's ordered the Sylvari to start on one end of the particular alcove they've ended up in while he works from the other, tail hooked onto the stepladder to brace his weight while he browses carelessly.
"I thought you'd be a little more thrilled to be here. Isn't this right up your alley?"

Joker - ota
For all that this is a more selfish and self-interested stop than anything else, well, they're apparently still expected to perform. Joker is more than fine with that. He's not apart of the Nightrunners or Security. This sort of thing, helping to put on a good show, is why he's gotten the Stage Manager position in the first place, so he'll stick to what he knows. What else can he really do?
Still, at some point- whether while he's preparing the big top for some practice, cleaning up after practice, or in the middle of throwing knives or up in the silk ropes- he does speak an idly curious question to the open air for anyone to really answer.
"How exactly do ya entertain books?" His lips quirk up in an idle grin. "I mean, it's usually the other way around, isn't it? Do ya think they'll just put the whole books in the seats, and we'll perform ta paper?"
Hey, it's a legitimate question.
B - Book Learning
As with any good library, there are always plenty of ways to get to some of the more... difficult to reach tomes. Ladders that roll along the ground and reach up high are one way, although you can't tell what is up there until, well, up there, that's one way. Other ways are how some places have multiple floors that one can troop up and down in their search. But the really easy way to get a good look at what's in this massive and far-reaching library?
Flight.
For anyone stuck to being on the ground, they'll hear a familiar voice calling down to them. "'ey!" That would be Joker, the beat of his wings a noticeable rhythm in such a quiet and enormous place. He waggles his hand when attention is finally snared. "Need a help lookin' around? Two eyes are better than one, right?"
Of course, Joker isn't the only person who can fly in the Carnival, through whatever means. As he's flying around, he may have to suddenly rear back, wings flapping to get him to a stop, so that he avoids an accidental collision. "Oi! Oh, sorry about that."
C - Library Encounters (NPCing available)
Whether it's him or others, of course... The library is teaming with a kind of life its own. You never know what kind of things might pop up.... Have things suddenly become a little quieter?
[ooc: A npc chance! Whether you want me to do it for you, or want to get some of those NPC bonus points yourself, I'm available for anything!]
D - Joker's Wild
[I'm also really game for anything else here, so if you have another idea, feel free to run it by me, and I'm set to go.]
Library Encounters
So really, it's only a matter of time and probability.
What is, you ask?
Well, the painted pine trees and river shore, water pouring from the pages like ink, and a ghostly young woman, wrapped in the tatters of clothing the both of them might have found familiar on Tanyuu, who drops to her knees in front of them.
"Please! A great oni has attacked our village and burnt our crops and homes, and he's carried my sister off into the mountains to be his bride!"
This... has nothing to do with rot at all.

Any Day After The Nasty Network Post
On the rare occasions that he's alone, he's more or less wandering without purpose, watching the others busy themselves about the place and emanating a grim, dispassionate air about himself.
But mostly? He's following Reira.
Which is how most will likely find him, the sound of his dry scales rasping over the floor mingling with the sounds of whispered conversations and turning pages.
[OOC: Please note in the subject line if you want Reiji solo or with Reira!]
Reira status: A MYSTERY (whichever way you want my dudes)
...or tail, really, since that's the first part of him that she sees. But there's only been one other naga to have been a part of the carnival before, and he certainly didn't have a tail like that. But it's also laid right across her path and...well, it might be easy to go over it herself, but that really seems rude overall. So--
"Ah, pardon me, could you move your tail for a moment? I need to get by."

Yugo - OTA
[The one thing that immediately comes to mind for Yugo is that this library world has millions more books than Yugo’s ever seen in his life, let alone read. And as the teen gazes at its vastness, it would probably be wise not to drive around on his usual bike despite the walking distance along the numerous shelves, yet also wise to use the one ride that he knows for sure won’t cause a mess…
His gift from the Ringmaster.
After pulling out and looking over what seems to be a toy motorcycle from pocket, Yugo gives it a light underhand toss and the hovering vehicle expands into its full size. Which. Still isn’t the size that he’s particularly comfortable with, come to think of it.
Riding the tiny thing is just as awkward as it might look (aside from the small summoned Clear Wing riding on his shoulder), so periodically he’ll give his back a break while looking through books.
Since he’s not particularly in the lookout for something, Yugo’s just skipping whatever he finds a dull read. Though occasionally the dragon peers closer when the book has nice and big illustrations.]
Hm? Liking something about this one, Clear Wing?
[The cat-sized monster summon is almost squinting at whatever the book is opened up to. Which is either the tale of a magician or of a lioness in a contest of might against a dragon.]

B - The Book of the Law (Wildcard)
[In addition to any small snippets from canon being alluded to, there’s a juicy story here that people can find. Alternatively, got a book ghost or book adventure in mind?
This mun sucks at NPCing.Come at me with anything!]A - SURPRISE IT'S GON
[Surprise you two-while Gongenzaka on his own has the restraint to stay back, Marishi has just enough curiosity to move from their book-reading session toward these two. Something about a Dragon holding a book just...caught their eye.]
Anything interesting?

Tanyuu Karibusa | OTA
Ghosts of the Past
Still, the familiar feeling left certain other reminders a bit too raw. As Tanyuu slithers her way down an aisle, her shadow creeps up the shelves of it's own accord--a writhing mass of character strings that somehow without sound manages to give the impression of thousands of softly chittering insects, an otherworldly buzz that crawls up the spine. Tanyuu turns sharply when she spots it out of the corner of her eye, freezing for a moment before she remembers where she is. This isn't home...the mushi has been sealed, she doesn't need to worry anymore.
Still...some habits die hard. She reaches out with her claws to try and pluck the shadow up, but it's no more physical than the light that frames it. "I suppose I deserve a reminder like this," she murmurs under her breath, before reaching to pull a manuscript off the shelf.

Alphys | OTA
[Alphys takes one step into the library, then stops dead in her tracks. Mouth agape, she stares up in awe at the sight unfolding before her.]
W-wow...!
[SO many books. She's never seen this many in her life. She's overwhelmed, and pink, glittery bubbles start to radiate from her. It might look pretty, but she's probably blocking you right now.]
B: Weeb central
[She spies one volume at first, sticking out among a bunch of science textbooks of all thing. But it's definitely a manga- one she hasn't read! From there, Alphys follows the trail of breadcrumbs until she finds it: an entire wing packed to the rafters with manga. And... they're all out of order. They're organized by color. How is she supposed to find the rest of the series she's looking for!?
...She's in the middle of pulling volumes off shelves and stacking them in order when she hears the sound of steel being unsheathed. She turns around to find half a dozen black-clad ninja slowly bearing down on her, brandishing weapons.]
Uhh... I was gonna put them back when I was d-done!?
[Alphys backs up against the shelves instead of, you know, running, as the ninja clan looms closer and closer. Only they're not shelves anymore- they're tall, ancient trees and this is a massive forest.]
Ohhhh noooo, what's going on now?
C: Wildcard!
[Feel free to find Alphys wandering around anywhere. Or feel free to stumble across her embarrassing fanfics]
B
[This was...unexpected.] Just which book are these ones from..!?
[A surprisingly important question-can they be reasoned with? No? The book will have THE ANSWER.
But also, come to think-] Alphys-! [Maybe, just maybe, he should prioritize safety here-] Behind me!
[Just look at him he's massive CLEARLY he's the best shield ever.]

Tigerstar | OTA
...but it sure is scary.
[Cats are generally fairly smart creatures - a dedicated warrior can figure out how to open a latched door and a medicine cat has a remarkable repertoire of herbal tips and tricks. Still, while peaceful accords and organized government are not foreign to Tigerstar, being able to discern language from a piece of paper certainly is. One may find a few places here and there where books have been knocked from their shelves to lay open on the ground, aftermath of an almost manic reading spree.
Tigerstar has never read a day in his life before now, but now that he can, he is deeply engrossed in the vivid pictures and ideas that fill his head as he paws through pages and basis in every word. He's likely disturbed a few locals in his recreational indulgences - perhaps you find him beset by an especially irate library denizen, or maybe you simply take the opportunity to sneak up on him when he has his nose buried in paper and ink. Either way, the response this prompts is...surprisingly inviting. He grooms his shoulder and greets you politely, taking care to stay out of arm's reach.]
Mouse dung. Was I that distracted?
ii. Hearts and Diamonds
...and tigers, oh my!
[After a couple nights of binge-reading and spectre-evading, Tigerstar has had about enough of this place. Books are interesting, sure, but they're also a liability out in the open like this. So, of course, when he finds himself poking through an especially strange story of looking glasses and white rabbits, he hastily endeavors to break away before he gets too absorbed....But, unfortunately for him (and perhaps for you), it's much too late for that. Before he even realizes what's happening, he finds himself sitting in the branches of a tree gnarled once, twice, three times! And it isn't long before he hears someone else entering this thicket of parchment and surreal greenery.
He appears on the branch of another tree without warning, clearly taken aback by it as he nearly falls off in his surprise. He needles you with a frightened glare once He's recovered his footing.]
You! What brings you down the rabbithole?
[What? Did he really just say that? Well, his tone is still hostile, at least, so it's definitely Tigerstar, but...]
iii. Would You Like Some Tea?
...is that what this weird leaf water is?
[As this infuriating story continues to unfold, Tigerstar has begrudgingly led you deeper into this bizarre thicket, to offer you a seat with at least two guests Tigerstar would definitely rather be hunting than joining for tea time. From just over the edge of the table, he glowers at you - just ears and eyes expressing the utmost in feline discontentment.]
Could I interest you in something to drink, Alice?
[If it sounds like saying this physically pains him, it's probably because it does.]
iv. Wildcard
...What team? Wait.
Feel free to hash out another prompt via PMs or on plurk/discord! An intro log for this guy will be going up later, though, so maybe put the brakes on for that one. When he isn't getting into trouble, Tigerstar can probably be found just lurking around the carnival, hiding under stages and carts or perching in outrageous places as any self-respecting cat would.
KNOWLEDGE...
But Reira is quiet, and approaches with a book under her arm, going so far as to go and take a seat before he speaks.] Umnnhhh...
[She has to consider that. He was Super into this, after all, so...]
...I don't think so.
