When: Day 47 - Day 58 ish
Where: The Athenaeum
What: The carnival arrives at book world. First week, they'll be performing for magical manifestations of book characters. Second week, it's time to hunt (for books, in the library.) Around Day 58 some stuff will occur.

Though the carnival will be performing for its guests in the first week, they are welcome to search the Athenaeum while they are off duty during that time. The manifestations of story characters will be out in full force during performance week, with animals, people, objects, and even locations growing out from various tales. Most are distracting at worst, and will be curious to check out the carnival. Some, however, can be as dangerous as they were in their stories of origin. You know what to do.

► IT'S TIME TO ROLEPLAY: The best way to deal with book ghosts is to follow their narrative to its logical conclusion - turn the tables, work the story so it ends in your favour! Naturalistic and narratively satisfying plotting will have the manifestations following your lead. However, push too hard and introduce too many plot holes, inconsistencies, or illogical plot twists, and they will reject your reality utterly, becoming quite aggressive in the process. You can also use your natural abilities and powers to fight them in a traditional sense, but in the Ringmaster's experience, it's best to fight reality benders by bending reality right back at them. If you aren't careful, it's possible to be dragged fully into a story's reality, and then things get really messed up.

► IT'S ALSO TIME TO READ: The carnival came here for a purpose, and that purpose is to research. Specifically, the Ringmaster is looking for information on the Queen's Miracles - the set of ancient fae artifacts that the Blue Rose is one of. The carnival needs these artifacts to defend itself, but nobody knows where they've been for thousands of years. That's what the books are for. However, nothing is stopping you from pursuing knowledge for personal reasons. The halls are open to your perusal, and only your heart can guide you to the book you truly seek. [Yuya still jerks up when he senses the movement beside him, his attention turning to Tyki immediately.] Whoa--sorry!

[He teeters back slightly and rubs the back of his head sheepishly.] Am I in your way?

Not really. I could just go over you, if I wished. [He's not going to really apologize himself but Tyki at least gives him room to breathe. His eyes roam over the other, taking in body language and appearance. Ah, it's another kid with estranged hair.]

No need to apologize, kid. I was distracted by this piece of technology. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. [At least he hasn't tried to take it apart.]

Yuya. [He gently offers, because he'd rather be called his name than 'kid'. He tilts his head to peer at whatever's in Tyki's hands.] A CD player? What's wrong with it?

Tyki Mikk. [Simple because it was polite to give a name when one was offered. He turns it in one hand with his thumb pressing over one of the buttons.] It won't play. I was told all I had to do was hit this middle button but within time it stopped playing every song.

[He's unaware of any repeat function or anything like that.]

Oh! We spoke on the radio before, right? [When Tyki offered to help get the Harbingers back, as much as he could anyway. Yuya's glad t put a face to a name.

He shifts up so he can get a better look at the CD player.] You mean it stops after every sound ends? [That sounds broken.]

That's right. During your talk of friendship and restoration of our coworkers. [Which only reminds him how much he hates the radios due to the way voice is partially distorted or he would've recognized him sooner.]

Something like that. I am not adverse to this technology but so far it has been an inconvenience.

Can I see it? I can't fix anything, but... [Maybe it just has a setting that needs to be pushed. Although it looks really simple, no touch screen or menu navigation or anything, so he's not holding out hope.]

It's my only one. [He stresses, not that it would be a complete loss if Yuya made it worse. He holds it out, gloved hands grasped around it almost delicately like he's unfamiliar with it himself.]

I won't break it! [He takes it precariously, turning it over in his hands. This tech is a couple decades old, but still familiar enough he can figure it out.

He pops the top, revealing the CD inside.] Oh-that's CY-Ren's, right?

[His hands return to his sides with nothing to do and he'll idly set one at his hip as he watches him inspect the player.]

Good eye. You are right. I have others of hers as well but that is the copy of that one I have. [Copy was such a strange word. To mass produce something like this and the way the modern world worked still baffled him. Humans had progressed so quickly in such a short time.]

I bought one of her CDs before we left. [Granted, the CD also probably has her name printed on there to make it obvious, but you know.

Yuya furrows his brow, closing the CS player and then pushing the play button.] Is it starting?

At first I thought about recruiting her to the carnival. [He's sure with is charm and conman skills he could've gotten back stadge to possible see her. Entertain and explain. Except she turned out to be rather influenced by another force of nature.

He takes one of the long buds and slides it up against his ear. There's music playing so he nods.] It is now.

I think staying in her home is better for her. [Not the least because the carnival is constantly endangered.

Yuya presses the fastforward button, to see if it plays the next song.] I don't see anything wrong with it... maybe you just need to push the loop button so it keeps playing?

Is it? [He asks again, more clearly this time. Yuya was a big factor during Wismuth. Friendship is something he believes in, thick and thin, except it would all crumble so easily with one single command.

His eyes lower towards his hands to see which buttons he's pushing. The song changes.] The what?

[Yuya points the button out to him.] This should keep playing the CD until you stop it yourself or it runs out of battery.

[He offers the CD player back to Tyki.] Anyway, CY-Ren needs time to recover, and... the carnival's not really a good place for that right now.

[He pauses, and then looks a little more uncomfortably to the side.] I don't know if I'd tell anyone to stay with the carnival right now. Unless they were really ready to fight for it.

[He looks at the button pointed out to him and commits it to memory. There is a small tilt of his head at the mention of CY-Ren.]

To be fair, I only thought of that until she became a threat. Can you say at all that she would believe any of us are friends? Other than possibly you. [Yuya seemed to whisk in a lot of friendship during that whole affair.]

I wouldn't even try to convince my friends or family to stay at this bloody carnival.

[Yuya lets out a little sheepish laugh. He's not sure he can say he was CY-Ren's friend at the end of it all, but he did really want to help her.

His expression quickly sombers, though, his gaze dropping a little.] It's really crazy lately, huh. My friends are already here, but...

[Sometimes he wishes they weren't.]

When I joined, I entered during our visit to the Summerlands. I thought to myself, 'I'm going to be bored here' compared to what is required of me at home.

[Childermass had assured him he wouldn't be but it was hard to believe it until it happened. He slides the earbud out of his ear and tucks it back into his bag.] Better than an enemy to complicate the matter but I do not envy you. Were they here before you contracted?

[What he's really asking is will they leave first? Because if family arrived he could see himself signing on another year just to ensure they weren't alone.]

It wasn't boring before. [Says the boy who lives for entertainment.] Gongenzaka was, but... he signed another contract recently. [So Yuya's set to leave first, but he's trying to find ways around it.]

If it weren't for the Fae chasing us, it's not bad at all.

I'm told it was also more lively, less scrambling. [He's heard of the place with these 'pokemon' for example.] I'd imagine someone has to leave first. I doubt there are ways of allow people to stay until the end of someone else's contract but then I don't know if anyone has ever tried.

Stops mostly to entertain and not armor us up, you mean?

I don't think anyone's ever asked before, so I was going to. [Although things have been understandably a bit busy.

He crosses his arms.] Yeah, that! It's making everyone scared, and not everyone signed a contract that's worth it.

If you do find out, I want to know as well. Just in case. [Not that he believes his family would find the appeal of this place for the long term. He would have to reassure them there was no need to keep him company and he was not lonely at all.]

At least she's kind of fixed that a little with not taking on those against their will. Though, not everyone is aware of what they signed up for still. It's hard to ambush every new person walking in here. Sometimes it just happens. [If he never saw the Ringmaster, he would've never challenged her, for starters.]

Yeah, I know. [He was certainly relieved to hear that. No one should have to be here against their will, even when things aren't so bad. But also, not everyone's contacts area something they might have exchanged willingly for this. The carnival is supposed to bring smiles.

He hopes she's more lenient about people wanting to leave and come back later, too.]
