FAERIE TALES↴![]() Though the carnival will be performing for its guests in the first week, they are welcome to search the Athenaeum while they are off duty during that time. The manifestations of story characters will be out in full force during performance week, with animals, people, objects, and even locations growing out from various tales. Most are distracting at worst, and will be curious to check out the carnival. Some, however, can be as dangerous as they were in their stories of origin. You know what to do. ► IT'S TIME TO ROLEPLAY: The best way to deal with book ghosts is to follow their narrative to its logical conclusion - turn the tables, work the story so it ends in your favour! Naturalistic and narratively satisfying plotting will have the manifestations following your lead. However, push too hard and introduce too many plot holes, inconsistencies, or illogical plot twists, and they will reject your reality utterly, becoming quite aggressive in the process. You can also use your natural abilities and powers to fight them in a traditional sense, but in the Ringmaster's experience, it's best to fight reality benders by bending reality right back at them. If you aren't careful, it's possible to be dragged fully into a story's reality, and then things get really messed up. ► IT'S ALSO TIME TO READ: The carnival came here for a purpose, and that purpose is to research. Specifically, the Ringmaster is looking for information on the Queen's Miracles - the set of ancient fae artifacts that the Blue Rose is one of. The carnival needs these artifacts to defend itself, but nobody knows where they've been for thousands of years. That's what the books are for. However, nothing is stopping you from pursuing knowledge for personal reasons. The halls are open to your perusal, and only your heart can guide you to the book you truly seek. im not sorry for this
[And of course, no sooner does she say that and flit ahead, a book spirit dressed in a cloak comes rushing around the corner-]
'The mystery is only becoming clearer..! I have only one more thing- Ahah!'
Oooohhhhhgggg... [While Carly is dizzily swaying in the air, the man in the cloak immediately hones on Syrlya.]
'There you are Watson! I've been meaning to find you-there is something I need you to do!'
Hah? Watson? [Mutters the hummingbird, ignored by the spirit.]
no subject
Fine, he's Watson. Whoever that is.] What is it you need me to do?
finally settled on the 'empty house' story aha
It should be obvious, my dear Watson! We have a mystery to solve..! I know it's been a while but that shouldn't dull your senses so!
Hehh?? Why does he even think you're another book spirit!? [The bird is Still Ignored.]
no subject
Right... of course. But I still need you to tell me what you want me to do. [He says it dully. Maybe Watson is just in a bad mood.]
no subject
[He's already a few feet ahead, allowing Carly room to get nearer to Syrlya.]
Is it alright if I perch here? [She whispers, before adding.] ...I guess we're in a detective book, at least...
no subject
He raises a brow at Carly.] Are you planning to remain a bird this entire time?
no subject
[That's fair. As it is, Sherlock is MOVING ON.]
Yes...mmm just a block away now...Watson! You've something to defend yourself with, yes?
[There is a pause, and Carly whispers-]
...If it comes to it, should I just set him on fire? Not the 'burning' one just...you know....
no subject
[He doesn't sound very enthusiastic.]
no subject
Watson! Did you hear me? [Sherlock asks, turning briefly.] A weapon, Watson! [he whispers, half conspiratorially.] What have you to defend yourself, surely you have some sort of pistol, or...something!
[He says 'something' somewhat dismissively, as if he fully expects there to be a pistol, how could his 'friend' ever arm himself with anything else,]
no subject
[He puts his hands behind his back and in one hand materializes an old-style revolver. It's, coincidentally, time period appropriate although the style is a little more ornate. Being an illusionist gives him a bit of an edge in an illusionary story.
He pulls his hands from behind his back and waves the pistol with a complete disregard for gun safety.] Right here.
[He's not even asking why they're going to have to shoot something.]
no subject
Just a few more blocks Watson- and be sure to keep ever quiet!
Yeesh, he's really leading us along... [Carly mutters, fluffing up her feathers.] That's really nice detailing by the way... [Compliments where they're due, see.]
no subject
[Anyway, it looks like this investigation is going to involve some forceful entry so Syrlya continues to glance around, eyes on the shadows for any suspicious movement as they walk.]
no subject
Man, this is not a good 'Sherlock', huh... [Carly mutters, puffing up with annoyance. She'd like to just turn back, thanks. So far no shadows at least- and Carly keeps her eyes open as well.] Maybe the story was a knock off...
Ah- A-Anyway, if that's what you got from memory, you did a great job either way, [She compliments.] Let's hope it fires as well as it looks....
no subject
Syrlya leans over, trying to see just what Sherlock here is doing. Silently, since he keeps getting shushed.]
no subject
[Sherlock, for his part, isn't speaking at all now- merely working the pins at the lock of the door they're at, so that they can break in. After a few gos at it, he's done- the door clicks open, and he stands, pleased.
At least until he turns, in which case he just startles.] What are you looking over here for then Watson? Weren't you keeping watch?
[Eep!] Eek- quick, lie-!
no subject
[He just straight up ignores Carly's suggestion to lie, because he doesn't think he has to. If even 'Watson' is used to enough danger to be following this guy into breaking and entering, he's probably got a similar sense of his surroundings as Syrlya has developed. You learn to be very aware if something might come out to kill you.
Anyway, he tilts his head to the door.] Shall you go in first, or me?
