⇨ THE ATHENAEUM

Who: Everyone!
When: Day 47 - Day 58 ish
Where: The Athenaeum
What: The carnival arrives at book world. First week, they'll be performing for magical manifestations of book characters. Second week, it's time to hunt (for books, in the library.) Around Day 58 some stuff will occur.
Warnings: Reading is mandatory.

FAERIE TALES

Though the carnival will be performing for its guests in the first week, they are welcome to search the Athenaeum while they are off duty during that time. The manifestations of story characters will be out in full force during performance week, with animals, people, objects, and even locations growing out from various tales. Most are distracting at worst, and will be curious to check out the carnival. Some, however, can be as dangerous as they were in their stories of origin. You know what to do.

► IT'S TIME TO ROLEPLAY: The best way to deal with book ghosts is to follow their narrative to its logical conclusion - turn the tables, work the story so it ends in your favour! Naturalistic and narratively satisfying plotting will have the manifestations following your lead. However, push too hard and introduce too many plot holes, inconsistencies, or illogical plot twists, and they will reject your reality utterly, becoming quite aggressive in the process. You can also use your natural abilities and powers to fight them in a traditional sense, but in the Ringmaster's experience, it's best to fight reality benders by bending reality right back at them. If you aren't careful, it's possible to be dragged fully into a story's reality, and then things get really messed up.

► IT'S ALSO TIME TO READ: The carnival came here for a purpose, and that purpose is to research. Specifically, the Ringmaster is looking for information on the Queen's Miracles - the set of ancient fae artifacts that the Blue Rose is one of. The carnival needs these artifacts to defend itself, but nobody knows where they've been for thousands of years. That's what the books are for. However, nothing is stopping you from pursuing knowledge for personal reasons. The halls are open to your perusal, and only your heart can guide you to the book you truly seek. Check the plot post to see what's allowed, and sign up to find plot info or other important game information below.

They descend into territory that’s most certainly not the library — but not anywhere Lambert recognizes, either. His fingers curl into feathers, but there’s nothing for it but to trust Childermass knows where he’s headed, or what he’s doing. He’s realized by now that the magician can’t talk in this form, but as they get closer to the ground, he still has to ask:

“Where are we?”

"Northern England," Childermass answers, turning back in a flicker of shadows and shifting mass. Feathers meld back into clothing, same as ever, not even ruffled by the flight. He'll look around them again, spotting a familiar horse idling and picking at grass not too far off.

Beyond that, a gnarled grey tree with twisting branches bared by the oncoming chill and bearing one very unseemly fruit. Which is to say no fruit at all but the silhouette of a body strung up by the neck.

"Not far off from the abbey, actually. I know this story. It's one of mine."

From the witcher’s world to the magician’s. Lambert should be grateful for the chance to see some of this ‘England’ Strange is forever waxing sentimental about ... if there was much of anything to see. In contrast to the saturated brightness of Kaer Morhen in riotous spring, this seems washed out and gray, which seems about right for a story Childermass claims.

“Is it?” The witcher follows Childermass’s gaze over to the horse and the hanging body, and he frowns. Not out of any real concern — hanging bodies are hardly something to shock him — but because he’s not certain if that’s a good thing or a bad.

“At least you know this one already. Ought to make things easier.” Not that that’s strictly true, of course. After all, Lambert knew his, and that didn’t help any.

"It should," Childermass agrees and immediately turns to walk off towards the tree. "It's not any more complicated than cutting him down from the tree before he really does die."

Which will complicate things a little, seeing how Childermass remembers how this actually went very differently. To him, it only makes sense Vinculus was never dead to begin with. How else would he have suddenly sat up, alive and well, if he hadn't simply been mistaken? Only the thing is, when they do reach the tree, there is absolutely no doubt that this man here is extremely dead, a rope made from the woven branches of the tree itself the root cause.

Up to the tree they ride, and Lambert can’t help but frown when they get there. Because that man looks pretty damn dead to him — he can’t hear any soft struggles for breath or see even the barest twitch of movement.

What does catch his attention is what the man has been hanged by.

“Did this poor bastard piss off some fae, too?” he asks, already unsheathing his sword in preparation to cut him down. “Because this doesn’t look like a human did it.”

"Something like that," Childermass says, stopping at the tree to look up and, similar to Lambert, frown. He knows Vinculus had seemed so dead before and he seems that way now, but... He won't bother reaching for a knife, though that's how he got him down before. A sword is bound to have an easier time, though, so he steps aside and stands ready to pull the body down once it's free (rather than letting him fall).

"I'm not sure that part of the story matters, however. Just that I find him."

[personal profile] whattaprick 2018-05-29 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
It’s a task Lambert is pretty well suited for, at least. Since the poor bastard is dead, he isn’t going to bother being gentle about chopping through the branch in a motion that sends the body dropping into Childermass’s arms. Leaning over to examine him for signs for life, his lips curl back into a sneer at the rankness and general look of him.

“Who is he? Another magician?” The skepticism in his voice suggests he very much doubts it, but he also can’t comprehed any other reason Childermass would care for someone like this.

"In a way. Vinculus is the madman who told Strange to become a magician," Childermass answers, knowing he's described that particular man to Lambert before. He manhandles the body down once down and drags him further down the hill, away from the tree. Though once there and laid out on the grass, that Childermass kneels down and moves to unbutton Vinculus' dirty, threadbare shirt is probably more worrisome than the entire dead thing.

Although the reason why may be apparent enough once that's done, seeing how Vinculus' entire chest seems to be covered in writing, blue ink etched directly into every inch of skin. To head off what he suspects in an impending question, he adds, "He also happens to be the Raven King's book."

[personal profile] whattaprick 2018-05-30 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Lambert has to pause to think that over, pawing back through more pleasant memories of an afternoon wasted to the serious conversation that came before.

“So when you said you had to rely on the memory of a complete lush for the prophecy...” He frowns, bending down to examine the man’s skin, and incidentally, put a hand to his chest to determine how long it’s been since the man died. The symbols are all alien to him. “You can’t read this off him?”

Dead long enough to have gone cold. There's no clear or obvious reason why Childermass should expect the man to sit up, alive and well, and even he's beginning to realize that himself. He reaches out to handle the man's wrist, noticing just the same how cold and lifeless everything seems. His brow furrows, though not to match a frown. If anything, he's looking a little worried...

This isn't how it went. Is it?

"No," he does answer that, though, easily enough. "It's why I need a key. Vinculus himself can't even read any of it. He had someone else translate him... but even that man is long since dead."

What happens next is a good question and with how Childermass goes on silently frowning at the corpse, who is very clearly dead, even to him at this point, it's almost like the magician doesn't even know himself. It's his story. He should. Only—

"Something's wrong," he finally admits, getting back to his feet. "He should be alive... I brought him down here, then turned to go get paper and ink from Brewer." Only Lambert has no idea who that is, so he looks up, away, over towards the horse idly picking at what grass is left clinging to the ground not terribly far away. "Over there."

So he supposes he'll go do that, turning to follow that train of thought through. Nothing really happens after he gets there, though, rifling through Brewer's saddlebags and turning back again, only to freeze on doing so. There was no sound of another man arriving, no sign, no scent, he's just there, suddenly, standing over Vinculus with no warning. Pale, dressed in fine black robes, hair as long and dark to match, it's no one Lambert will have ever seen before and even Childermass can't quite place who that is.

"Maybe you should have asked Norrell or Strange for advice on raising bodies," the witcher muses. Brewer, eh? It's on the tip of his tongue to tease the magician for the name, but as soon as he realizes they're not alone, Lambert's hackles raise. The books never really seem to have followed any logic except their own, so it's not like he's unfamiliar with how things can appear and disappear without warning ... but it still puts him on guard, hand already reaching for his sword.

If he didn't know this was Childermass's story, he would assume this was some sort of fae.

"Who are you?" he asks, sharply. "Get away from him."

[personal profile] atouts 2018-06-13 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The man doesn't even bother looking Lambert's way, reaching down towards Vinculus instead only to pause and look up at a very audible click. There's more than just paper and ink in Brewer's bags and looking back to Childermass will make it all too obvious what else was within his reach. He's pulled a pistol, something he had already loaded beforehand, on the off-chance he ran afoul of Lascelles all over again, and the story doesn't disappoint in keeping that true to form.

"Step away from that body," the magician all but growls, taking a few steps towards both that and the intruder, gun raised and aimed. "I do not wish to shoot you but I will if I must."

Did this happen before? Did it? Childermass can't recall, he can't, though he won't let confusion show on his face. Maybe another story wandered into this one? Is it possible? Regardless of what it is, the man in question seems unperturbed by the threat.

He stands, head tilting curiously to one side, and replies, "That's no way for a servant to greet his master."

Something about the man just makes Lambert’s hackles rise, looking at him. What he says next doesn’t help that impression in the least.

“He’s no servant of yours,” he snaps. “Do as he says.”

Lambert isn't even a part of the story, so the chances of the man heeding him are, unsurprisingly, none. He does spare the witcher a glance, but that's all before he turns back to step over the body, towards Childermass. When it looks as though he has every intention of going after him, well, it should also be unsurprising that he moves to fire the pistol.

Only the man raises a hand, waving it, and that'll be the last thing Lambert recalls before the world unfreezes again. There's a hiccup in time, even if it's only a few minutes gone between then and now. The man, gone, and Childermass, his pistol pushed aside. If he'd been bleeding from the face same as he had before, that might have been healed, but that wasn't a thing this time around.

It leaves Childermass lowering the weapon and looking around, utterly confused, right up until Vinculus — previously extremely dead — sputters and sits up, spitting something out and immediately gasping for air.

"Ah..." With that happening, there's no delay in Childermass getting back on the usual route this story takes and pocketing the gun before walking towards the now very much alive man. "There we are. See? Not dead at all."

[personal profile] whattaprick 2018-06-22 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
As the stranger steps forward, Lambert's hand goes to his sword, yanking it out of its scabbard. He has no intention of seeing Childermass be attacked in front of him without doing something about it, and even as the magician raises his pistol, he's baring sharp teeth and preparing to rush forward.

Then the world stutters, and Lambert's left blinking -- and the man is gone.

"What?" He wheels around to look at Childermass and the now-conscious vagrant, brows furrowing. He's alive, as Childermass says, but -- "He was fucking dead a minute ago! And what happened to the other one!?"

"He couldn't have been," Childermass says matter-of-factly, though he does only stop to loom over the coughing, confused storybook Vinculus rather than leaning down to help him up. There's time. This isn't exactly real. Lambert mentioning the 'other one' has his attention instead.

The witcher will be unfortunate enough to find that Childermass can only give him a puzzled frown over that. Whether it's the story following a part he simply isn't aware of — or, in this case, making sure he follows it — or that the Raven King's spell is strong enough to even contest this, well... It's not like Childermass can say. He doesn't even remember.

"Other one? Lambert, it's just us and a horse out here..."

“There was a man,” Lambert snaps, rounding on Childermass with drawn sword even as the revived Vinculus looks between the two of them in confusion.

“He was right here, don’t you remember? Pale, black robes, long hair. You were going to shoot him.”

If anything, waving a sword around like that has Vinculus scooting away through dirt and grass, still bewildered at whatever's going on. This leaves Childermass to, unsurprisingly, frown at Lambert. As odd as it was that he has his pistol out...

"No?" He sounds a little uncertain at first, but then he follows up with a firmer, "No and I think I would remember someone like that. I never shot anyone out here."

"He called you his servant."

Lambert looks from Childermass, to Vinculus, and back, his expression growing more frustrated. There's something here that isn't right, but he can't put his finger on it. Unfortunately, Vinculus scooting back like that is a good way to get his attention, and he descends on the man, leaning down to grab him by the arm and hoist him to his feet.

[personal profile] atouts 2018-06-25 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Confusion flickers across his face, disrupting the frown.

"That doesn't sound like Mr. Norrell," Childermass says faintly, unable to process just who else might claim him as a servant. As much as he would profess to serve the Raven King loyally, expecting the man himself to show up and say so has only ever been an impossible dream, one that refuses to cross his mind even now.

But then Lambert is dragging Vinculus to his feet, to which the man gives a shout — cursing at Lambert — and struggles up until Childermass brings his attention back to bear on him.

"Oh, quit it. We aren't here to harm you, just retrieve you. You've been an awfully hard man to find."

And to that, Vinculus just stops, stares, and then cackles over the entire ordeal. If Childermass is seeking the original book, he'll tell them, he's out of luck. The words have all changed, he claims! And it's at that point the story begins to fade away, evaporating back into the library, the form of the gleeful vagrant the last thing to drift away.
whattaprick: (oh come the fuck on)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2018-06-25 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately for Lambert, things don't gain much more clarity after that. Though he tries again and again to ask Childermass about the man in the book, the witcher gets no satisfying answers, and before long they're both caught up again in the search for more information on the Miracles, and it's all too easy to put from his mind.

It's not until later, much later, that he comes across a book about the Raven King. He doesn't think of it much -- gets it from the Curator on a whim, figuring it'll make an entertaining gift for one or another of the magicians at some point -- but it's forgotten with all the rest, left gathering dust on the edge of his desk.
