FAERIE TALES↴![]() Though the carnival will be performing for its guests in the first week, they are welcome to search the Athenaeum while they are off duty during that time. The manifestations of story characters will be out in full force during performance week, with animals, people, objects, and even locations growing out from various tales. Most are distracting at worst, and will be curious to check out the carnival. Some, however, can be as dangerous as they were in their stories of origin. You know what to do. ► IT'S TIME TO ROLEPLAY: The best way to deal with book ghosts is to follow their narrative to its logical conclusion - turn the tables, work the story so it ends in your favour! Naturalistic and narratively satisfying plotting will have the manifestations following your lead. However, push too hard and introduce too many plot holes, inconsistencies, or illogical plot twists, and they will reject your reality utterly, becoming quite aggressive in the process. You can also use your natural abilities and powers to fight them in a traditional sense, but in the Ringmaster's experience, it's best to fight reality benders by bending reality right back at them. If you aren't careful, it's possible to be dragged fully into a story's reality, and then things get really messed up. ► IT'S ALSO TIME TO READ: The carnival came here for a purpose, and that purpose is to research. Specifically, the Ringmaster is looking for information on the Queen's Miracles - the set of ancient fae artifacts that the Blue Rose is one of. The carnival needs these artifacts to defend itself, but nobody knows where they've been for thousands of years. That's what the books are for. However, nothing is stopping you from pursuing knowledge for personal reasons. The halls are open to your perusal, and only your heart can guide you to the book you truly seek. That may or may not provide some insight into Childermass’s servant issues in Portland.
no subject
Forcd servitude seems like enough of an issue on its own even without working a similar role in England. "I bet Childermass is happier doing his own thing."
no subject
"While Strange and Norrell are cursed, he's going to be the only English magician left to put it all back together."
Did Strange tell Yuya about the curse? Ah, well, now he knows.
no subject
"But you'll help him, right?" Lambert can still perform some magic after all, or he'll find another way. Being a pioneer is a really daunting task, but from what Yuya's seen, he can believe in them. "To create a new future for magic in England."
no subject
"First thing's getting that curse off Strange. Then we'll see."
no subject
Yuzu and Gongenzaka couldn't pendulum summon at first either, but their support was still important for Yuya to improve it. Obviously Yuya and Childermass are night and day, but the basic idea is the same-- having people you care about support you makes you stronger.
"Mr. Strange won't let the Ringmaster help because he wants to break the curse himself. That'll be easier if you're in England with him, too."
no subject
"Strange won't let the Ringmaster help because he's an idiot," Lambert grumbles.
Though that brings a different worry to mind, one that makes his hands slow on the dishes as his throat tightens. Strange's curse, the Ringmaster can remove just fine. Childermass's curse, though...

When Lambert seems to deflate a little, Yuya assumes it's related. So he gently nudges him with his arm and smiles. "It'll be fine. The Fae that did it is gone, so it's not hurting him anymore."
no subject
"Childermass is cursed too," Celandine fills in for him. Her voice is calm, but she's tightly curled in on herself on the counter, as small as she can make herself. If she were human, she'd probably be hugging her knees to her chest.
"The Rose Queen used Nightshade to put something on him in Wismuth. Something the Ringmaster can't take off."
no subject
"The Ringmaster can't..." Yuya's gaze drifts down. "Even with the Blue Rose? Why?"
He doesn't know what all that thing does, but he knows it's supposed to be for protecting them. Isn't there any way to be powerful enough to do it?
no subject
"I don't know the specifics," he says lamely. "But it's one of those fae things. Only the one it comes from can take it off. It's like... like a grudge. She's probably still fucking pissed he let us in the back door in Portland, and he was the only one she could find."
This, this is what he means about Childermass being stupid.
no subject
Strange's curse had a very tangible, present, almost-deadly effect. If Childermass' is worse, and only the Rose Queen can take it off, how much danger is he really in? Could they ever convince the Rose Queen to lift it?
no subject
He exhales. "We got him an egg, so ... that's all we can do, for now." Yeah, Yuya, he said 'we,' like rebirth eggs are just something you shop for at the supermarket. "But maybe with these Miracles..."
He trails off, electing not to share the too murderous thought of 'maybe with the miracles we can get this bitch of a Rose Queen to take the damn thing off or we'll blow her to pieces.'
no subject
He squeezes the sponge a little in his hands. "We definitely won't let her get away with something like that. There has to be something else we can do."
Because of course of Yuya can help, he's going to. Childermass is more of a friend of a friend, but he's a good guy who doesn't deserve Fae murder.
no subject
Still. It's touching, but he also imagines Childermass would roast him alive if he ever found out he talked to Yuya about the problems he'd rather not.
"Yeah, we will," he says, simply, then smirks, nudging Yuya in the side. "Now let's finish cleaning up or we'll be in a whole other kind of trouble. "
