FAERIE TALES↴![]() Though the carnival will be performing for its guests in the first week, they are welcome to search the Athenaeum while they are off duty during that time. The manifestations of story characters will be out in full force during performance week, with animals, people, objects, and even locations growing out from various tales. Most are distracting at worst, and will be curious to check out the carnival. Some, however, can be as dangerous as they were in their stories of origin. You know what to do. ► IT'S TIME TO ROLEPLAY: The best way to deal with book ghosts is to follow their narrative to its logical conclusion - turn the tables, work the story so it ends in your favour! Naturalistic and narratively satisfying plotting will have the manifestations following your lead. However, push too hard and introduce too many plot holes, inconsistencies, or illogical plot twists, and they will reject your reality utterly, becoming quite aggressive in the process. You can also use your natural abilities and powers to fight them in a traditional sense, but in the Ringmaster's experience, it's best to fight reality benders by bending reality right back at them. If you aren't careful, it's possible to be dragged fully into a story's reality, and then things get really messed up. ► IT'S ALSO TIME TO READ: The carnival came here for a purpose, and that purpose is to research. Specifically, the Ringmaster is looking for information on the Queen's Miracles - the set of ancient fae artifacts that the Blue Rose is one of. The carnival needs these artifacts to defend itself, but nobody knows where they've been for thousands of years. That's what the books are for. However, nothing is stopping you from pursuing knowledge for personal reasons. The halls are open to your perusal, and only your heart can guide you to the book you truly seek. "I know they..." He bites his lip. "They were people who had died in one way or another, and when they had died there had been something unfinished in their lives, some sort of grudge or need for revenge that hadn't been settled..." That's about all he wants to ballpark here, in part because he doesn't want to take all of her words. He isn't sure if she would be offended or grateful for it.
no subject
"...Misty came for revenge... ...Kiryu-san, he was the same, but... ...For Demak, it was duty," Carly continues softly. "...He was sacrificed, and went into his role willingly. ...for me..."
The woman chews her lip, shuddering. "...For me, I knew of the war, before I died..it was what Jack had tried to protect me from...to keep me away from, and I still agreed when I heard that voice..!" she wheezes, shaking.
"....but not because of revenge. ...Aslla Piscu had promised love. ...As I died... ....the last thing I had wanted, was to see Jack again...."
no subject
What is one to say?
In the end, Carly certainly had been able to see Jack again, but the Feathered Maiden had instead been forced to do battle with the Warrior of the Sun, and as far as she has experienced here, that's the last time she sees him. He recalls her mentioning that she was picked up in the afterlife, before she's revived and appears to go about her days as if she had never died at all.
Yuusei doesn't know what words to provide, what statements will help her and what will hurt. Will anything help her here? Does she even need helping?
He swallows thickly.
"...you died. Literally died. You already said the gods offer the illusion of choice; they promise the thing you want most in the time when you can rationalise least. You can't blame yourself for agreeing to Aslla Piscu under those circumstances no matter how much you did or didn't know, you can't. You at least know that, right...?"
no subject
It's simply a matter of...well...
"...It doesn't change what I regret, for all that I've moved away from it...for all that I've tried to do more good than the bad that was done. ....We really did think it was necessary, in a strange way. ...that the world deserved it..."
A pause, as she adds- "....I'm just glad we didn't 'win'."

"I can... I can see that," he says in an attempt to convey empathy as opposed to an observation. "I... would imagine the world would seem cold and cruel if the people in it had killed you, that it... deserved whatever it received." His thoughts return to Kiryu, who rotted in prison because of Yuusei's own actions. Or at least it still feels like it's his fault. How abandoned by the world he must have felt. He knows it doesn't justify the actions of the Dark Signers, but even understanding the logic of the opposition can do wonders for communication.
He does nod in agreement here, though; a world immersed in darkness is something he's glad they avoided.

"More than that. It was the sort of thing my killer had done, had been doing... ...I was murdered because I'd found his secrets," she sighs. "...but... ...then again, I probably thought more of Jack during those few days, rather than the world..." Ahhh...well.
"...It's over now, at least. ...Aslla Piscu is gone. Forever," she adds, nodding.
no subject
He smiles softly. "You're here now; you conquered Aslla Piscu. I think that says something about your willpower and your desire to do good in the world."
no subject
Her breath catches, as she admits what's been buried deep within her mind. "...And to finally experience it all without him complaining in my ear, or trying to convince me of one thing or another... ...it's freeing, neh..?"
no subject
He certainly hopes so. There's a lot he still doesn't know.
Although his smile falters slightly, and then it fades altogether as those words slowly sink in. To experience it all... To experience all of this...
"...Aslla came with you," he breathes, barely audible.
no subject
"..........you didn't realize that yet...did you..." She's quiet, for a few moments. After all, so much of what she said and admitted was under the impression that he'd...known. That he'd known about what happened, and how, and...
"Yes. ...He came with. ...The Ringmaster forced his hand- he couldn't possess me, no matter how hard he tried...but we could talk, and after a few weeks he would appear in my reflection, and later my shadow...
"...At first, my changes caused me to look like him," Carly whispers. "...And I was scared- and I'd almost run, I hated it so much... ...but I didn't. And then I suppose by the end of the year, he'd realized my returning home would mean his sealing, so he'd convinced me to give him a chance."
But through that... "...I don't think the Ringmaster ever began to fall for that, though. My second contract... ...I'd asked to know him better, and she gave me his magic instead," she chuckles, painfully and bitterly.
"...After...'Portland', I asked her to be rid of him, without abandoning that power. ...So she helped me to consume him instead."
Well. "...I guess that did our world some good, neh..? ...It's one less god for the next generation of Signers to fight..."

All he can do is stare. He doesn't even know where to start processing all of this, there's so much to take in; and that's disregarding everything that's been recontextualised with this new information. It's impossible for him to even think of starting anywhere with all of this. Of course, what might obviously stand out the most to him is the fact that Carly literally ate a god, but even this isn't something he can fully wrap his head around, something he can fully accept.
His eyes are filled with many things. Fear, pity, and guilt stand idly by, unwanted but ever-present regardless of his wishes, while awe hesitantly creeps in; an ache in his chest wells up and threatens to spill out of him, and he can almost envision her telling him it's nothing to cry over now. And among other things, other horribly complicated things, there's no room for him to give it any thought, any chance of acceptance.
Although, she probably couldn't accept any of this in the beginning either.
Yuusei pushes the cards still in his hands under some books nearby. "...I'm... so sorry..."
no subject
"...For putting that all on you, at least." She...hesitates, chewing her lip. Furrowing her brows before finally looking to him with a worried expression. "...are.. ...Will you be alright?" 'Knowing that', she leaves unsaid.
