FAERIE TALES↴![]() Though the carnival will be performing for its guests in the first week, they are welcome to search the Athenaeum while they are off duty during that time. The manifestations of story characters will be out in full force during performance week, with animals, people, objects, and even locations growing out from various tales. Most are distracting at worst, and will be curious to check out the carnival. Some, however, can be as dangerous as they were in their stories of origin. You know what to do. ► IT'S TIME TO ROLEPLAY: The best way to deal with book ghosts is to follow their narrative to its logical conclusion - turn the tables, work the story so it ends in your favour! Naturalistic and narratively satisfying plotting will have the manifestations following your lead. However, push too hard and introduce too many plot holes, inconsistencies, or illogical plot twists, and they will reject your reality utterly, becoming quite aggressive in the process. You can also use your natural abilities and powers to fight them in a traditional sense, but in the Ringmaster's experience, it's best to fight reality benders by bending reality right back at them. If you aren't careful, it's possible to be dragged fully into a story's reality, and then things get really messed up. ► IT'S ALSO TIME TO READ: The carnival came here for a purpose, and that purpose is to research. Specifically, the Ringmaster is looking for information on the Queen's Miracles - the set of ancient fae artifacts that the Blue Rose is one of. The carnival needs these artifacts to defend itself, but nobody knows where they've been for thousands of years. That's what the books are for. However, nothing is stopping you from pursuing knowledge for personal reasons. The halls are open to your perusal, and only your heart can guide you to the book you truly seek. KNOWLEDGE...
But Reira is quiet, and approaches with a book under her arm, going so far as to go and take a seat before he speaks.] Umnnhhh...
[She has to consider that. He was Super into this, after all, so...]
...I don't think so.
...I don't get noticed a lot of the time...

You don't sound especially proud of that.
[Tigerstar continues to study her. He can still remember the feeling of rock and magic shield thing in his jaws, and the squeeze of gauze on his hindquarters is hard to ignore, but she seems to be much more peaceful here, at least. He's not letting his guard down, of course, but Tigerstar has been around long enough to know that even the most bitter enemies can hold civil conversations at times. Besides, he wouldn't want to damage any of these books, as he was warned not to do.]

...What are you reading?

Something about a kit who grew up alone in a twoleg city. It's pitiful. [He pins his ears back in contempt.] When I was a kit I faced death like a proper warrior.
[Quiet anger boils in his belly as he recalls the distant memory of his siblings' cowardice. He knows he very well could have died alongside them, but he also knows that StarClan blessed him for his bravery. What a pity that there are so few like him, unafraid to pursue their ambitions at any cost.]
so this didn't take long to hit CW: child soldiers lmfao
...I don't think most things know how death works, when they're little, [She eventually says, mentally assuming 'kit' to mean 'child'.]
...People act like normally, war doesn't happen with people who are little too, [She adds.] ...But there's lots of things people here do, that I've never seen, so...
...That's probably what's normal. ...People growing up more, first.
[Even Shun had protested when her brother revealed she would be going with them, after all. 'This isn't a kindergarten! We aren't babysitters, this isn't any place for a child!']
oup, yep, time for some death talk
I find 'normal' varies depending on the life you live. While it is normal for a kittypet to learn about cutters and kibble and twoleg machines, it is more normal for a Clan cat to learn about foxes and hawks and monsters. No matter where you are born, you must learn how your world works, and how to use it to your advantage. Those who don't will die.
[He speaks surprisingly plainly, perhaps somewhat unconsciously slipping into a mentor's monologue. This stone-clad twoleg reminds him too much of Ravenpaw, and the thought works a knot of discomfort in his gut. Ringmaster tasked him to protect this carnival, so he is more than prepared to find ways to ensure these temporary campmates are equipped to protect themselves.] ...Though, even a warrior like me has some difficulty learning new normals. This carnival is very different from my Clan, with so many twolegs around.
[He continues with a more irritated wave of his tail.] Never mind this 'library'. But I have to learn regardless, or I will die. Even a kit knows that to learn is to survive.

[Her seeming trail off snaps back to focus, however. ...Slightly, anyway.] ...I don't know what monsters you mean, but.. ...I guess that makes sense.
...It seems normal, though. To not learn new normals right away. I had to learn that, there's different foods, and that you're supposed to wear different clothes...I guess I know what to do now, but a lot of things are still confusing, like feelings, or 'fun' things...
[She looks up at one of the bookshelves.] ...I didn't see books like this, until I was at the Carnival too. ...The soldiers made me read papers a lot, and then my 'mom' put cards in my head, but...
...I'd never seen a 'story'.
no subject
Of course it is normal to take time to learn. But the kit in that story spent much too long wallowing in his own pity to learn and survive. The world's claws are sharp, and only some are strong enough to fight back.
[He walks in silence a bit after that, pondering the things Reira has mentioned. He's not sure at all what 'putting cards in my head' means, but he also isn't really bothered enough by it to inquire further, at least for the moment.] I've never seen a book before coming here. As I understand it, I'm only able to do this 'reading' because of your carnival.
[He turns to look back at her over his shoulder, ears perked a little in a question.] How is a 'story' different from these 'papers'?
no subject
[It's an honest question, but her reasoning is more unique.] ....People don't grow up like cats. It takes us longer. ...Ummm... ...Kittens are cats after a year, but...
Niisama is sixteen years old, and he's not called an adult. He does some adult things, but he isn't one.
[So she's curious as to how much time it actually is.] ...Maybe it's because we can talk the same right now. With the magic.
[Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagic- And ah-]
Mnh...Stories are...things about people or places that didn't happen, or don't exist, mostly. They're things you read because you want to, I guess...
...but... ...the papers were always things like...secrets. Where someone was going to go, or attack...
...I was supposed to find those, without getting caught, [She mutters, her voice slightly distant.]
....I think I was good at it, since I'm still here...

Interesting...Spying on one's enemies is very dangerous work. But kits and apprentices are often better equipped for it, I suppose, as they are smaller than warriors, even if only a few moons separate them from us.
Sasha did tell me that twolegs grow slower than we do. I am in my prime, but I have heard that even in so many moons a twoleg would still be just barely beyond newborn. Though twolegs have much more to learn about than we do. Everything from your dens to your healers are a mystery to the Clans and even kittypets.
[He pauses a moment to sniff at one of the shelves, catching familiar scents on one of the bindings. Curiously, he tugs it loose with a paw.] ...Still, there is honor in serving and protecting your own, even if you are young. Many apprentices who broke the warrior code for their Clans are remembered as heroes, after all.
[Tigerstar lets the book fall open and catches the heady odor of catmint as dust whirls from its pages. He starts to read idly, though he's still mostly focused on his conversation with Reira - until a familiar name on the page drops a cold weight of dread in his chest.]

True Monsters. [Something else answers for her. It is not Reira- certainly, the strange and even commanding voice it carries is far from her small timid one. But what peers out from the flower-like growths on her head is scarcely as large as a mouse, plump and thickly furred in appearance. Yet somehow it is undeniably...her. Somehow. And it speaks.] Creatures of Greed. Selfish.
[It stops.] ...I didn't know who the soldiers 'were', [She mutters, staring at her feet.]
...I just had to listen to them, or I'd be like the others on the ground.
[Dead, in other words. But Tigerstar's feelings hit her, and she frowns, looking to the side. Hmm?] ...Something's wrong...
[It's not a question. It's a statement. And-] ...Are you ok?
[There it is again, that same question, like before.]
no subject
He stubbornly looks away to stare at the book again.] It's nothing important. I'm just surprised to see his name here.
[His obvious discomfort, however, indicates quite the contrary. Whoever this name belongs to has pretty emotional history with Tigerstar; the way his hackles raise and his claws press against the floor are pretty clear indicators of that, never mind the dread and anger boiling beneath the surface.]
no subject
[She stares, and blinks, and then blinks again at the name. And as much as she's not actually being hurt by his upset, it is strong enough to make her feel at least internally uncomfortable, the girl finally speaking again.]
....You seem a lot more than surprised...

Firestar has been a thorn in my side for several moons. He is....capable, but a kittypet at heart. Head full of ideals and little else. These "stories" seem to favor those like him.
[Tigerstar lashes his tail and stalks away from the tome.] There's not much point in speaking of him here.
no subject
...The moon changes every month, so... [That's her question that's her guess, but continuing on, she peers over at the pages, and shrugs.] ...Sometimes 'ideals' are ok. ...I guess not if there's nothing else though... ...if you don't have other things, you can't make ideals real...
[Tigerstar is leaving though, which means Reira is getting up to follow- very easy, for once, and she rather likes that.] Ummmnh...no point because he isn't here..?
no subject
...But, I suppose idealism can be dangerous. There are many stories of starry-eyed warriors who met early ends because they only followed their hearts. So perhaps it would not be a bad idea to speak of Firestar and the mistakes he has made. [His words are punctuated by yet another tail lash.] Though I would rather look to the future. ThunderClan could never hope to defeat TigerClan, but he has a way with words...
no subject
Fables. [the daemon answers.] Tales to Warn.
Umn. That.
...Are you scared for the other cats that listen to 'Firestar'?
[Poor choice of words, but...] ...because of what would happen, if they started fighting you, but then lost because they aren't strong?
[Bit of character judging here, don't mind her.]
no subject
I am not scared of Firestar. He may have a good head on his shoulders, but he could never hope to win against me in battle.
...But even so, I am wary of him. He has complicated my plans before with that charisma of his, and now that he leads ThunderClan...I have to take special precautions to be sure that he does not use WindClan against TigerClan.
[He slows briefly, actually thinking of someone other than himself a moment.] ...That is, he has a way of making more allies than enemies. That can be dangerous when a cat with that skill is working against you. I have united two of the four Clans, but if I am not careful Firestar may do the same with the other two. It could be dangerous for my Clan, even with Ringmaster's help.
no subject
I said you were scared about what he'd make happen. ...but I guess that's still not what you were saying, [She determines, tilting her head.] ...you just meant alliances.
...isn't wary the same as scared though? [It sounds the same, but she continues.] ...What makes it different? [The girl asks honestly. She's never really known.]
