⇨ THE ATHENAEUM

Who: Everyone!
When: Day 47 - Day 58 ish
Where: The Athenaeum
What: The carnival arrives at book world. First week, they'll be performing for magical manifestations of book characters. Second week, it's time to hunt (for books, in the library.) Around Day 58 some stuff will occur.
Warnings: Reading is mandatory.

FAERIE TALES

Though the carnival will be performing for its guests in the first week, they are welcome to search the Athenaeum while they are off duty during that time. The manifestations of story characters will be out in full force during performance week, with animals, people, objects, and even locations growing out from various tales. Most are distracting at worst, and will be curious to check out the carnival. Some, however, can be as dangerous as they were in their stories of origin. You know what to do.

► IT'S TIME TO ROLEPLAY: The best way to deal with book ghosts is to follow their narrative to its logical conclusion - turn the tables, work the story so it ends in your favour! Naturalistic and narratively satisfying plotting will have the manifestations following your lead. However, push too hard and introduce too many plot holes, inconsistencies, or illogical plot twists, and they will reject your reality utterly, becoming quite aggressive in the process. You can also use your natural abilities and powers to fight them in a traditional sense, but in the Ringmaster's experience, it's best to fight reality benders by bending reality right back at them. If you aren't careful, it's possible to be dragged fully into a story's reality, and then things get really messed up.

► IT'S ALSO TIME TO READ: The carnival came here for a purpose, and that purpose is to research. Specifically, the Ringmaster is looking for information on the Queen's Miracles - the set of ancient fae artifacts that the Blue Rose is one of. The carnival needs these artifacts to defend itself, but nobody knows where they've been for thousands of years. That's what the books are for. However, nothing is stopping you from pursuing knowledge for personal reasons. The halls are open to your perusal, and only your heart can guide you to the book you truly seek. Check the plot post to see what's allowed, and sign up to find plot info or other important game information below.

Yuya looks up at Lambert, raising an eyebrow. "No, we go out to eat if we want that."

It's not exactly his experience of a home-cooked meal. Nevermind Yuya is fourteen and his mom is a homemaker, so he's not exactly a well-rounded chef himself. He can make some magic things. Operate a microwave. Manage pancakes. "Do you?"
whattaprick: (you've got explaining to do)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2018-06-04 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
"No," Lambert shakes his head. If he seems a little disappointed by the answer, its because he is. Maybe it's because they've so recently just done something that reminds him of that time, because it's surprisingly easy to say what comes next:

"Used to order food out a lot back in Portland. Wasn't much of a cook back then, either, but I lived with two sisters, so..."

...He'll just leave out the part where the fondest memories of cheap salt-laden food had little to do with Peridot and Miko and more with weird sleepovers with crazy crow changelings.

Yuya pauses, his expression changing as he seems to regard Lambert a little differently.

Then he smiles slightly. "My mom cooks for me, but it's usually stuff like what Rin makes. And pancakes."

He looks back at the fridge, where the leftovers seem suddenly less appetizing than before. "Maybe we could try? I still help in the kitchen sometimes... I bet we could make gyoza."

Yuya doesn't know how to make gyoza. He thinks he can guess.
whattaprick: (not convincing)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2018-06-04 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
The blank expression on Lambert's face suggests the term doesn't ring a bell, but after a moment of consideration, he smirks.

"Sure. Might as well try something new. What do we need?"

They're absolutely going to ruin this kitchen, but they haven't realized that yet.

Yuya perks up, and he pulls away from the fridge. "Pork and cabbage. And they're wrapped in dough." He presses his hands together. He doesn't remember exactly the kind of dough, but they can probably figure it out.

"You fill them and fold them together and boil them." It's a dumpling.
whattaprick: (being a shithead)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2018-06-04 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
"That sounds like a dumpling." Lambert, at least, looks enthused at the prospect. Having familiar ground always helps.

"The dough's easy enough. Same thing that goes in noodles." The only thing Lambert can reliably make. "We just need egg, salt, flour, and water."

As he speaks, he's already hustling off to start opening cabinet doors. The main trouble with this is that he doesn't know where things are in the kitchen, so it's trial and error, but he manages to get a couple of sturdy bowls and a wooden spoon out of the cabinets, at least.

"It's a kind of dumpling," Yuya admits, before he dives back in the fridge for eggs. How many do they need? He's just going to grab the whole carton.

With those tucked under his arm, he starts opening cabinets on the opposite end to find other ingredients, Flour, flour... aha! he strains for it on the top shelve...

It's just out of reach. He strains a little harder.

Lambert is a little busy suspiciously eying measuring cups and trying to figure out what they’re for. He usually just eyeballs this shit, which usually works out to something edible, but has a vague sense that he probably could use these to guarantee better proportions.

He turns, about to ask Yuya’s opinion, when he notices the boy struggling. “You need any help there?”

He’s not bothering to keep amusement out of his voice because he’s a jerk.

"I've got it!" He sets the eggs on the counter, and crouches to jump up and snatch the flour bag. He's able to just get his fingers around it to pull it forward, but not enough grip to stop it from tilting over and smacking into his face.

There's a cloud of white everywhere, and a muffled sound while he scrambles to upright the bag and stick it on the counter. He shakes his head to remove some of the flour, which really just fills more of it in the air.

He looks at Lambert blankly before giving him a thumb's up and scrambling to find the rest of the ingredients. Like filling a pitcher with water.

Lambert outright snorts at Yuya’s newly acquired dusting of flour but turns his attention to the matter at hand quickly enough. He isn’t sure how hungry and patient both of them are, but more is better than less, right? Two cups of flour go into the bowl, and then upon consideration, a third.

Now for the eggs. He cracks two into the bowl, one at a time, stirring vigorously to mix them in. It’s looking a bit stiff without the water, but he can’t judge until they’re able to add some moisture in. No problem. Once Yuya gets back with the water, Lambert nods at the other bowl.

“Wanna get started on the fillings?”
hippocarnival: (✮ 062 ✮)

[personal profile] hippocarnival 2018-06-04 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yuya brushes more flour from his face as he sets the water down, then nods. "Sure."

He remembers enough that the filling has to be pre-cooked or else they'll get burnt wrappings, so he sets about putting a pan into the stove top and then returning to the fridge to find... well, it's not pork but it's some sort of meat. It's probably fine.

He gathers the meat and cabbage and drops them aside before turning on the shove. "Have you made stuff like this before?"

[personal profile] whattaprick 2018-06-06 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Close enough." Lambert shrugs. "How hard can it be?"

'How hard can it be' turns out, in fact, to be something of a struggle, especially between them and their limited kitchen experience. The dough needs to be remixed after they roll it out and discover to their dismay that it's lumpy and filled with pockets of flour. More bowls get pulled out, and then it's wrestling with wrapping the dough around the (slightly too crispy) meat in a configuration that won't just spring open. Trying to fold it into the dumplings Lambert and Yuya doesn't work out well for them -- they just sort of end up awkwardly twisting it into bundles of dough with a small scoop of meat pressed into the center, hoping for the best. Some of them come undone in the process of cooking, but they're salvageable, even if it means eating them more like a weird stew.

Regardless of their misshapen quality, they're actually pretty edible, and they're both hungry enough by then that they taste just fine going down, and Lambert is unbelievably smug about this. The kitchen, though, is a bit of a mess, and the witcher decides they need an extra bit of help... so he summons Celandine to help by retrieving stray utensils and the like, tasking Yuya with getting the dish-washing started while he works on putting ingredients back in their place. Lambert's been practicing, it seems -- he doesn't appear to show discomfort having Celandine out of his immediate range anymore.

It's like that for a while, working in contented silence. It's when the witcher is reaching up to put the flour back on the shelf and Celandine is handing Yuya a fork that the daemon speaks, conversationally:

"So it really doesn't bother you? Lambert and Childermass?"

There's a soft paf and a swear from the witcher as he drops the damn flour on his own face, much the same way Yuya did earlier.
hippocarnival: (✮ 019 ✮)

[personal profile] hippocarnival 2018-06-06 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
It is a bit of a mess. Yuya's confidence in their cooking drops immediately, but despite the wariness he's determined to muscle through it and do the best they can. Any mistake is met with encouragement and a stronger attempt, and broken dumplings are met with laughter as Yuya makes a sloppy attempt at eating one. They're still good, if not actually gyoza, and Yuya eats a little short of a dozen.

He puts a clean bowl aside to dry before taking the fork from Celandine, but her question causes him to pause his efforts.

"Uh, you mean... not-dating?" His tone implies that he absolutely still considers it dating.

While Lambert coughs and chokes on flour, trying to get out a protest, Celandine cocks her head inquisitively and looks at Yuya. She's part of Lambert's hidden and unhidden self in so many ways, but there are still things they're both uncertain of.

"Whatever you want to call it." She leans forward to whisper conspiratorially, even if Lambert is just going to learn this later when he unsummons her again: "They haven't decided that yet."

Yuya glances sideways to Lambert, and then leans over as Celandine starts to whisper--though he doesn't lower his voice.

"No, it doesn't bother me if they're together. They make each other happy, right?" He smiles, honest and genuine, but there's a touch of bemusement as he raises an eyebrow and regards Celandine. Lambert really shouldn't need to be sitting here wondering what Yuya thinks of his relationship, as if Yuya's part of his family or anything. So...

"Are you asking because they're both guys?"

Yuya might be a little romance-avoidant, but he's not as dumb about it as he acts. There's not a lot of reasons Lambert's soul should be asking that.
whattaprick: (sincerity)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2018-06-06 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
They had wondered, of course, and while it visibly flusters Lambert to be seen through that easily -- never mind all the nonsense about being happy -- Celandine is all his relief that they don't have to spell it out.

"Yes," Celandine says simply, looking at Yuya steadily, her tail flicking slowly behind her as she searches his expression. "Lambert remembers that sort of thing didn't matter in Portland. But ... it's different, where he comes from. Where John comes from."
hippocarnival: (✮ 111 ✮)

[personal profile] hippocarnival 2018-06-06 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yuya straightens up, moving to clean the fork while he keeps his gaze on Celandine. His expression softens a little, but he's still smiling. "I get it. It's kind of the same, where I'm from. You can do it, you just... don't really talk about it."

Or, it's impolite to talk about it. Although Yuya would like to think it won't always be that way.

He pauses his cleaning briefly, stopping himself from reaching to rub the back of his neck while his hands are wet and covered in soap. He shrugs instead. "But I think it's a good thing to be with people you love no matter who they are, right?"
whattaprick: (bashful)

[personal profile] whattaprick 2018-06-06 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Strange told us there are laws against it in England," Celandine says, unblinking. "We've seen people driven from their homes for it."

Lambert flushes. "That's enough," he snaps, bustling over irritably, flour-covered still, to try and pick the daemon up and move her away from Yuya. Even he isn't certain what she's trying to accomplish with this.

"He doesn't want to hear all that."
hippocarnival: (✮ 086 ✮)

[personal profile] hippocarnival 2018-06-06 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yuya's listening politely, but he looks up at Lambert curiously as he plucks Celandine up. He remembers how daemons work--he sees Marishi enough times. So after a moment, Lambert's attempts at silencing her don't phase him.

"It's okay if you want to talk about it... because you're going with him, right?" They did broadcast that right when everyone was discussing the silver mirror after all. Yuya heard it. "It's going to effect you, too."

He inspects the fork briefly before moving it aside to dry as well. Then he drops the sponge in the water and shakes his hands off before turning to Lambert. "Maybe there's somewhere else in the world you can live? Where... at least you won't be hurt for it."

Yuya's global history is definitely not well rounded enough for solid suggestions on that, though. But it's nice to think about.

Lambert’s cheeks stay flushed, but he won’t deny it. Celandine curls in his arms, content now that she’s gotten the ball rolling, and presses her head against his arm to give him the strength to keep talking.

“I don’t know.” He makes a face. “Strange said he had to pull all of English magic back together, since there wasn’t anyone else for the job, and even after that, he’s probably going to be cleaning up after everyone else...” So, in short, no place in that life for an itinerant witcher who wants to jump his bones.

We have him here,” Celandine murmurs. “With what we’re doing ... it might be all the time we have.

So he probably can't leave England. Yuya purses his lips together, mulling over it, but... he really has no suggestions. His shoulders sink a little, but Celandine makes it clear they've already considered a finality, so he feels like he can't leave it at that.

"I think... if you care that much, then you'll find a way to be together no matter what the law say." He's only briefly uncertain as he says it, but when it sinks in his smile lifts back up into a toothy grin. "Even if things are hard, they're easier to bear when you're not alone. Besides, you're pretty stubborn and he's pretty smart, so you'll find a way to make it work."

Yuya believes in that much. He's fought too hard, tooth and nail for people that he loves to believe that any real feelings won't be worth it.

At “pretty stubborn and pretty smart,” Lambert can’t help but crack a grin.

“You’re not wrong about that,” he admits. “The stubborn part. Though that’s both of us, even if he doesn’t look like it. We’ll sort something out. ” There’s a reason they fight so much. He moves closer to the sink, depositing Celandine carefully on the counter, and examines the dishes Yuya’s been working on. As cheesy and naive as Yuya’s words may be? They do make him feel better. Some of the tension in his shoulders eases out.

“You’re wrong about him being smart, though,” he snorts. “He can be pretty stupid too.”

"Smart most of the time." Yuya grins and winks at Lambert before turning back to the sink to continue washing dishes.

"I think especially here no one's going to give you any trouble. So if you two don't want to hide it... maybe you shouldn't."

Lambert is quiet at that. It's Celandine who speaks, softly, for both of them.

"Maybe. I'd like that."

Yuya smiles warmly at that, splashing the water as he dives his hands in quickly to grab another bowl.

"So, I still can't talk about it with Mr. Strange, right?" Not that he was intending to, but Lambert seeking validation from a teenager warrants a little teasing.
