Warnings: Individually marked! Could be a lot of things.

THE GRAND BALL

Heartstone Manor is a giant, spooky castle floating in the middle of a twilight filled void. It is the home of a Wyld Fae calling himself The Prince - and despite his name, he is a bestial creature crammed into a gentleman's clothing, completely obsessed with replicating the ideals of old timey human society, much like the 1800's. The Prince and his many servants all dress in a manner appropriate to to the 1500's - 1800's, and decorum and beauty are held sacred above all else. All the workers of the carnival are currently staying there, in the hope of enabling a successful diplomatic venture between the Ringmaster and the Prince. The Grand Ball is being thrown by the Prince to honour these guests, but his manner of doing this is going to come as a bit of a surprise.

THE RULES
  • Powers are all partially nerfed for 4th Wallers. They can be used in small to moderate ways for the sake of RP and narrative flavour, but 4th Wallers shouldn’t generally be using any powers in a super disruptive manner. No using powers for fighting with NPCs (yet), causing general chaos, or otherwise making your character a burden to the Prince. If they try, they’ll find themselves unable to do so.
  • Your character isn’t sure how they got here but they think they’re okay with it. Your character won’t remember how they were captured by the Prince at the start of the ball. They’re just kind of here and in formal wear, and something tells them it’s probably fine to just enjoy the ball. They are wrong.
  • In-game characters won’t initially remember how they all ended up at the ball either thanks to a temporary amnesia effect, but they will be able to be concerned about the fact that other people (possibly people they know) have shown up, and the fact that those other people are probably the Prince’s captives. Weren’t they doing something else at the castle before this, though? It’s hard to remember. This is all very confusing.
  • 4th Wall character who aren’t apping in were possibly never the real deal in the first place. There are a mixture of genuine captives and spooky replications created with magic – this is to provide some flexibility regarding 4th wall character’s states in game, as well to allow more than one of each character to be played. If there are multiple people playing the same character, then whichever one has an app accepted will have been the real one.
  • No doubles of in game characters. (Taken list here.) No AUs, no CRAUs, and nothing else besides characters that have full source canons or are original characters/fandom OCs with no bearing on the canon plot. If you tag in with a character who breaks these rules we reserve the right to remove them.

THE SETUP: 4TH WALLERS
  • With incredibly foggy memories of their recent past, your character will find themselves at a grand ballroom dance, filled with a mixture of normal humans and odd looking humanoids that have strange features like wings, horns, tails, fur, and the like. They have vague memories of being dressed for the occasion, but are not sure by who or why. Most disturbingly, they will find that, at first at least, they don’t really care about the details. It seems like a pleasant event, doesn’t it? Why not enjoy it.
  • This effect is definitely some kind of mind control, so you can feel free to have your characters be a bit confused and conflicted about it. Ultimately, they have been charmed to participate in the dance, so they will feel like riding the wave is the best thing to do even if that wouldn’t normally be their cup of tea. If your character has resistances to some forms of mind control, they are still overruled in this circumstance.
  • They may discover people they recognize (castmates) or even duplicates of themselves (somehow?), and these can all be treated as canonly occurring and played out as such. This event is canon for Lost Carnival, so it should be played seriously and respectfully – not that silly shenanigans aren’t also bound to happen.
  • All characters are required to dress in formal attire appropriate to a period area – specifically anywhere from the 1500s to 1800s. The Prince prefers if people are heteronormative in their clothing choices, but if you want you can probably get away with your ladies wearing suits or men wearing dresses as long as they look presentable otherwise.

THE SETUP: MANOR GUESTS
  • You find yourself at the Grand Ball without really remembering how you got here. The last few days are a foggy blur, and though you can remember some of the important stuff you were dealing with, it will feel less important right at the start. Of course, as the night goes on, memories of how the carnival reached this event will become more and more clear – as well as the inevitable worry and stress that comes with it.
  • For most people, there will have absolutely no memory of anything that happened after the morning of Day 175. Did the boating trip ever happen? Possibly not. Even as the night progresses, they will still have no recollection of how most of Day 175 went, which is probably disturbing. The Mod has contacted those that are exceptions to this privately to tell them what they will remember.
  • The people lost to the Manor’s security earlier in the week will be here too, but not as guests. In fact, all of them will be dressed in the black attire of a Heartstone Manor servant and will seem pretty okay with that fact. There are parts of them that look changed – and their dispositions are definitely one of them. How else could they possibly be working for the Prince now?
  • Updates to the event situation will be posted down in this section below. People can react to these posts as the circumstances change, and may new top levels based on them. It is possible to try to sneak away from the ball, but Manor Security will be trying to hunt you down. There is no mandatory outcome planed to this event, so character decisions can and will have a major effect in where the plot goes from here.

THE ACCOMODATIONS
  • MUSIC AND DANCING: There will be music playing the whole night, and most of it is so good you feel practically compelled to dance to it. It's possible to resist, but why would you want to do that, you party pooper?
  • FOOD AND DRINK: There are circle tables set up with fine silverware, and upon sitting down you will soon have a waiter come back to ask for an order. You can request basically any European cusine and it will be made for you. You will also be given drinks, most of which are alcohol, no matter your age. Fae don't care about children.
  • BALCONY STARGAZING: There are balconies that are connected to the ballroom in multiple locations that you can step out onto to get some fresh air. You'll see the courtyard of the Manor down below you, but everything beyond that is black, as if the castle is floating within a twilight void. (Because it is.) One small change is that there are stars out tonight, probably added to the sky for the occasion.
  • ALL NIGHT LONG: The ball will go on far into the early morning. Or, at least, until everyone fucks it up.

Connie had been starting out a window into the twilight void when the sword fight had started up. There continued to be a haze upon her mind that she was only really starting to realize was there. Why was it so hard to remember how she got here? The sword fight would normally have been such an exciting development, but instead, she was worried about how they were completely interrupting the dance!

She had half a mind to get her sword out and make them stop making a mess, but they were already out on the balcony by then, and she watched in awe as the explosion completely wiped them out of the ballroom.

She ran up to the rough hole, grabbing the edge of the doorway and looking below, not caring that the rain was soaking her through her giant floofy dress.

After finding Connie and talking to her, everything had felt so normal for a while that Steven almost forgot that they were in trouble. Being able to tell someone he could trust about the carnival had been such a load off his mind that he forgot about the more recent loads that weren't quite done away with yet - and as such, he only really notices the fight when Connie runs over to look and he sees Lambert and Sans disappear out onto the balcony.

He watches with her, dumbstruck, through the window - until suddenly it explodes in a loud flash of light. Steven gapes, coming up behind her.

"Oh my gosh... was that Lambert and Sans? WHAT IS GOING ON?!" Steven yelps.
sworntothesword: (really)

[personal profile] sworntothesword 2017-10-22 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Lambert and who?" It was hard to be emotionally invested in people she'd never heard of.

"Why are they fighting? This is supposed to be a nice normal dance!"
starseedling: (you die in REAL LIFE)

[personal profile] starseedling 2017-10-22 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
That's completely fair - this is probably kind of like coming in halfway through a TV series or something. Or maybe like when he started reading the last book of the Spirit Morph Saga before the first one.

His mind briefly rolls into a circle around the idea of who is what character in this instance, before he shakes off that tangent with a full body shiver. No, he doesn't have time to be sorting characters by personality type right now!

"I don't know! Sans is, like, the head of security at the carnival - usually, his job is keeping everyone safe! And Lambert is kind of like the head of the secret agent people that do all the important missions when we visit places! He's even my roommate here. They work together all the time, I don't know why they're fighting..."

Also, are they dead? Did they just die? He has no idea what's happening.

"I'm sorry Connie, this is really crazy... Lambert told me to stay out of this, but..."
sworntothesword: (relieved)

[personal profile] sworntothesword 2017-10-22 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Then you should..." She winced and held her forehead.

"...stay out of it, Steven! Let's just ignore it, and dance some more! We're here to have a good time!"

All of this carnival stuff was fine when they were just taking a break, but now there's stuff happening and the pull to the dance floor is so strong.
starseedling: (i want to be a nice person)

[personal profile] starseedling 2017-10-22 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Steven looks at her forlornly. He basically gets what's going on with her, and with himself, but it's weird. It's like she's here, but not quite. He knows that Connie would never lean away from helping if she could. He knows that he wouldn't either.

Yet... it feels so right, and so natural, to do exactly that. He doesn't know what to do about any of this, and people told him to stay safe and not interfere. So shouldn't he listen? It's practically an order.

He reaches forward to gingerly take her hand. It would be nice to get to dance properly...

And then, he flinches.

"Connie..."
sworntothesword: (high-key-panicking)

[personal profile] sworntothesword 2017-10-22 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
She doesn't hesitate, she reaches out with both hands to grab his, and starts pulling him away from the gaping hole in the wall.

Whenever she tries to fight it, it's like her head fills with gas and she can't breathe or think and she can't stand, the not thinking. If she just dances, if she has a good time, then she can still be her and she doesn't have to feel like she's dying.

"Please, Steven!"
starseedling: (you'll never shut me the fuck up)

[personal profile] starseedling 2017-10-22 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
The tone of her voice makes him really want to go with her - to just do whatever she wants. Yet, as he allows her to slowly pull him back towards the dancefloor, he can't help but make connections to past events. This isn't the first time he's dealt with a feeling like this.

It felt so similar, back at the Celebration. It had been so relaxing, so tempting to just drift off into his own world. So much so that he'd spent days without checking in on his dad, so compelling that they had nearly forgotten each other - and when he found his dad again, the vampires had almost gotten to him. It was almost too late.

He wishes that his dad was still here. Greg would know what to do, he always seemed to know what to say. What had he done before? Steven hadn't noticed that something was wrong until Lars came and helped him, and Lars is gone, too. But...

Connie is here. Connie is still here with him, and he can't let her down.

He sniffles, wiping away a tear that had managed to escape onto his cheek, thinking about all that. His other hand tightens around hers. They're already bad on the dancefloor, but he's not dancing.

"Connie... We... We have to stop. Something is wrong."
sworntothesword: (panic-attack)

[personal profile] sworntothesword 2017-10-22 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Nothing is wrong! Everything is great! Everything is normal! I'm not freaked out that I don't know how I got here, and that if I try to remember everything starts to go white!"

Everything is fine. Everything is fine. Everything is fine.

"Dance! We need to dance! Or eat food! Or make small talk!" Even though she hates small talk.
starseedling: (but everyone is so stupid)

[personal profile] starseedling 2017-10-22 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well, leave it to Connie to fit in that exposition while still being viciously in denial. Steven swallows, a lump still in his throat. Okay. Okay, they can do this. They have to figure this out.

Impulsively, he reaches forward and wraps his arms around her in a hug. Maybe that will make this easier, somehow. To know that he's here, even while all this fae magic is still messing with her head.

"I know it's scary," he says, more softly. He can feel the suppressed panic inside of her. He kind of feels the same way. "But... But we have to think about it, okay? Like Garnet said. We have to see what's wrong so we can make it better."

In all honesty Ichigo hadn't minded all that much when his table and the questionable cheeseburger upon it had caught fire. That definitely meant he didn't have to eat it. But this fire comes with a sword fight and he knows a whole lot about those.

Not professionally. He couldn't tell anyone if stances were wrong or whatever, but he's got a very good eye for things like skill and intent.

He doesn't get up right away, though he does turn to follow the chaos as it works its way onto the balcony, and about the time there's a hail of bones out there he's on his feet, and by the flash of light and crash of falling balcony (and people), Ichigo's found a very good spot by one of the windows.

... there's dragons down there now. He's pretty sure there weren't dragons out there before, or a skeletal wolf thing.

"...Is this the entertainment?" If he sounds incredibly dubious, it's because he is. But while Ichigo had no issues at all with jumping into the fray to save people, those are uh, dragons and a werewolf. He's not going anywhere yet.

Alphys is pretty sure this is not how any of this is supposed to go. Her first instinct is to run and hide under a table, but her ballgown is entirely too poofy for that, so she's stuck gawking awstruck at the scene that's unfolding.

The minute she sees magic bones, she lets out a squeak. There are two possibilities for where those came from and neither one of them are good. Gathering up her skirts the best she can, Alphys scurries over to the windows, paying little mind to the redhead next to her because those sure are some dragons down there.

And. Something else that looks startlingly familiar.

"Uhh... I don't think this is scripted..." She groans.

The fact that his company is a weird yellow thing doesn't really sink in for a while. In fairness, what's going on down in the courtyard is really distracting. None of it was particularly familiar to him at least, while he's faced any number of weird things, actual mythological creatures don't count.

"Please tell me you mean improv and not this place actually has rampaging deadly creatures." No. No probably not.

Probably those are dangerous rampaging monsters, and that werewolf skeleton thing is totally going to get wrecked because TWO DRAGONS.

Alphys is glanced at. The fact that she is blatantly not even remotely human doesn't stick at first, and he goes back to watching the mayhem below. A balcony would be a way better view but it's raining. The word yellow roams through his mind searching for something to attach to.

...

....

"...You're not a dragon are you." She might be. Tiny for a dragon. Wearing a dress. No wings.

"Uhhhh... the... l-latter..." Alphys grimaces. "I know those bones, and I'm pretty sure I've seen something like that skeleton... wolf thing before. Those are definitely my coworkers and this was so not supposed to happen."

She drags her hands down her face. All we had to do was stay out of trouble! Everyone's going to die now, she's sure of it. She's so consumed with thoughts of her impending demise that she almost doesn't hear his next question.

"Wha? Me?" She looks at him, then down at the dragons below, then back at him. "Oohhh, no, no way! I'm just a monster. I'm nothing like that."

This is considered.

Smallish lizard thing works with dragons and skeletonwolves. This does in fact make a lot of sense. "...What was supposed to happen?"

This probably means it would be inappropriate to sit back and enjoy the fight, and in fact he should probably do something about it if those are coworkers; Alphys at least seems intelligent and reasonably rational, so probably those things are too.

It's still hard to actually care. Damn poisons.

A glance is cast at Alphys, then back down at the monsters fighting below. "...Aren't they monsters too?"

"It wasn't planned, but it doesn't keep that cat-faced asshole from being all smarmy about it."

Zangetsu removes his mask as he joins Ichigo by the window, letting it flake away into nothingness.

"I know those guys."

"Free entertainment." The best kind to some.

And to a whole lot of partygoers, Ichigo's not the only rubbernecker. Usually he doesn't get the leisure of sitting back and watching a fight; blood sports weren't really his thing but it was kind of nice.

Oh hey, Zangetsu's back.

And Ichigo doesn't smell blood, which is even better. "Figures you'd be hanging out with things like that. Who do they belong to?" It makes sense to him that if Zangetsu knows them, they're likely SOMEONE'S Zanpakuto spirits.
moonfang: (back to back)

[personal profile] moonfang 2017-10-23 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
His clothes aren't even disheveled! It's almost like he went off and just talked like he said he was. Woah.

"They're usually people-shaped. Well, the skeleton dog is skeleton shaped. And I guess they belong to the Ringmaster, technically? So do I. Technically." He hums thoughtfully and points out the players below.

"The skeleton dog with all the eyes and wings is Sans. He's the head of security for the Carnival, but I guess His Royal Assface poached and brainwashed him. The gold dragon is Lambert, the Nightrider, in charge of... doing stuff? I'm not clear what the Nightrider actually does. The green dra-- oh, bat now. I think... that's the head engineer. I don't know their name."
eclipsingblade: (15)

[personal profile] eclipsingblade 2017-10-23 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Zangetsu does not just go off and talk. Besides, he smells wet. Something went on. Ichigo knows this stuff!

"...Yeah we'll see about that one." Not so much the people shaped things. Shapechangers? Did zanpakuto spirits ALL change their shapes? He'd been told when Zangetsu takes over he looks very different than the being standing next to him currently.

He's still watching though, because that's ... quite a show, intentional or not. "Riding at night, sounds like. What do you know them from?"
moonfang: (grinning)

[personal profile] moonfang 2017-10-23 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he did stand in the rain for a bit. Not his favorite thing to do, for reasons (Ichigo...) but he'll tolerate it for a little while. Unfortunately, talking to the Ringmaster had been completely fruitless. Typical. He's really starting to dislike fae.

... Yeah, just a little different. He'll have to show Ichigo sometime. What he really looks like.

"The Carnival. You got kidnapped by a fae called 'The Prince'. I made a deal with one known as The Ringmaster. I'll tell you about it when you're more able to care 'cause I'm only gonna tell ya once."
eclipsingblade: (14)

[personal profile] eclipsingblade 2017-10-26 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Tell me anyway." It only rained when he was strung out over something, and yet certain people in his life seemed to have it their life goal to make him more strung out. "What the hell is a 'fae' anyway?"

Yeah, Grimm's Fairy Tales weren't exactly part of his curriculum, and it never showed up in anything the shinigami ever said to him, so if he's sounding less than thrilled there's probably a reason for it. Oh look some new menace to deal with and the old one isn't even settled yet.

The old one, that's going to destroy reality. There are things higher on the important scale in his life than Tinkerbell.
moonfang: (this town ain't never gonna be the same)

[personal profile] moonfang 2017-11-06 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
"Nope. I'll have to explain it to you again later and I don't want to. You know how fuzzy your brain is right now. You aren't going to remember. But I guess I can give you a crash course on faeries."

He gestures to their surroundings.

"Fae are these... I guess they're sort of like interdimensional beings with magical powers. They belong to various Courts, as far as I can tell, and the courts don't like each other much. They like to kidnap humans. They do not have fairy dust and bug wings, in my experience."
