THE GRAND BALL↴![]() Heartstone Manor is a giant, spooky castle floating in the middle of a twilight filled void. It is the home of a Wyld Fae calling himself The Prince - and despite his name, he is a bestial creature crammed into a gentleman's clothing, completely obsessed with replicating the ideals of old timey human society, much like the 1800's. The Prince and his many servants all dress in a manner appropriate to to the 1500's - 1800's, and decorum and beauty are held sacred above all else. All the workers of the carnival are currently staying there, in the hope of enabling a successful diplomatic venture between the Ringmaster and the Prince. The Grand Ball is being thrown by the Prince to honour these guests, but his manner of doing this is going to come as a bit of a surprise.

But there's people dancing in obvious pairs of men and women, and... he can't help but think about the person he really wants to dance with. There's something about the thought of dancing with 2B that quickens his pulse.
But she's not here.
There's no point in hoping.
9S reaches for the glass. "Sure, I'll take it off your hands." One can't hurt, right? "Why did you take the glass if you don't want it, anyway?" This guy doesn't look like one of the servants.
no subject
He can't help it: Cole's voice tightens slightly and his tone grows slightly scared, obviously picking up on the hurt and suffering from one of the servants around here. However, that tone only lasts for a moment or so before Cole's thoughts shift as easily as the breeze, picking up on 9S's confusion instead.
"You never know," Cole simply remarks, looking over at 9S. "I showed up. She might as well."
But how did he show up? He got here, he must have shown up somehow. But there's too many thoughts, too many conflicting thoughts, people who are other people who are other people. He knows who he is now but this is still too much. But the hurt comes out in droves. Is that why he chose this?
no subject
The sentiment is... appreciated, but he doesn't believe it. 2B's supposed to be back in the Bunker. The whole point of him taking the contract with the Ringmaster was so that he could learn about humans without anyone noticing he's gone, thanks to... weird time shenanigans, he supposes.
"How did you show up?" 9S doesn't take a drink from his glass yet, tilting his head. "You're not one of the servants."
Based of what he'd said about the wine glass.
no subject
Cole's got no idea how to answer 9S's question. Because how did he show up? He doesn't know, he was just...here.
"I don't know. So much pain, held tight and taut, like a string about to snap. Maybe that's why I'm here?"
Solas said he was compassion. Solas said this is how he could help. But selfishly, Cole would have liked some prior notice before getting flung into a situation he doesn't understand.
no subject
What's with this guy? Belatedly, 9S does indeed scan Cole, but... he's the weirdest human(?) person he's scanned yet. Despite it being something obviously in breach of etiquette, 9S leans down to try and peer under that hat.
Like, the guy's already clearly not following the rules with a hat like that, so what's a little more rudeness?
"What are you, anyway? You look human, but you really don't read as one."
no subject
"I'm a spirit. I think." After all, he's still new to being a spirit. It feels familiar but it's still an identity Cole hasn't a hundred percent embraced. "People call me Cole!"
That part he definitely knows and he says as if it's 100% the truth.
oh yeah mind reading/empathy is a-ok by me!
But what the hey. "Nice to meet you, Cole!" 9S smiles, warm and friendly. "I'm a YoRHa Number 9 Type S model. But people usually call me 9S. And hey," 9S reaches over to pat Cole on the shoulder, "It's fine if you're different. You're still you."
no subject
"Thank you," he quietly says, almost inaudible. He's got more questions however, and (actually audible this time), looks over to 9S to ask, "What happened to numbers one through eight?"
no subject
He doesn't know all the other Scanner units that well, but 3S is the server admin hassling them to save music and videos to their local drives instead of storing them on the communications network server and slowing transmissions. 11S is a pretty decent guy, but he's really gotta lay off on the reminders to upload his data to the Bunker! He'll get to it when he gets to it!
Despite having taken the glass of wine off Cole's hands, 9S still hasn't even taken a sip of it.
"And there's more than nine of us. I don't know the exact numbers, but there's at least forty two Scanner units like me."
As well as That Guy, 801S.
no subject
"It must be nice to have that many siblings. Never quiet, always someone, plenty of people to talk to and talk with."
Guess who has no idea how robots work? This guy. Obviously 9S is talking about his family!
no subject
9S waves his free hand. "Oh, we're not siblings or anything. We just have the same base model, so we have similar physical capabilities."
Though he'd talked to Yuya about family, it's sill all very confusing. The way he'd described it, it isn't really that much different from being really good friends?
"But we do work together with the other models, too. So there's actually even more of us!"
He wouldn't say it's never quiet, though. If anything, he's usually alone. Sent out alone on to Earth, with only his Operator on the other end of his transmission line. His Operator, who has a strong dislike for chatter unrelated to work and frequently disconnected him once she's said her piece. Being partnered with 2B... it filled him with joy. His memories of spending time with her... are like the sun rising over darkness.
But this guy doesn't need to know that. So instead, he turns the topic over to Cole. "What about you? Do you have a lot of people to talk to and talk with?"
no subject
Thankfully, the conversation shifts to something Cole can talk about.
"I do!" he answers, with a smile. And then, like a kid listing off his friends, Cole just rattles off a list of people. "The Inquisitor, Varric, the Iron Bull, and Dorian. Cassandra reads me things! There's Leilana, Josephine, and Cullen, but I don't talk to them as much. Sera doesn't like me but I talk to her anyway. Blackwall might be different now, I haven't asked. Vivienne left. Solas left also."
And he can't help but sound a little annoyed as he mentions Solas leaving.
no subject
Yeah. The machines don't have feelings.
It's good that this guy has so many friends. It must be nice...
But 9S' expression turns serious, sympathetic to the loss. Er, does Cole mean leaving or... Dead? Gently, he asks, "Did Vivienne and Solas say why they left?"
no subject
Politics, man. He just doesn't know.
"Solas didn't say why." Which is something that Cole is entirely too bitter about. Who just leaves? He didn't even know, he couldn't even guess, he had no idea why Solas left and that's annoying him so much.
no subject
But regarding Solas, all 9S has to say about that is, "Oh."
Okay he actually has more to say about that.
"Maybe... Solas just needs time to work things out."
Or there's something they don't want Cole to know. Or maybe they're just plain gone. Who knows...
no subject
That's what's bothering Cole most of all. Not that a dear friend left, but that a dear friend left without even telling Cole why it happened. Whatever it is, he could have helped. After all, Cole knew Solas better than most.
no subject
He doesn't know this Solas guy at all but he sounds kind of irresponsible. If he was part of YoRHa, he'd probably get reported for desertion and disciplined appropriately. Buuut that's probably not what Cole wants to hear.
The only explanation he can think of for why someone would just straight up and leave their friend is... "Maybe he doesn't want you to help, because helping would put you in danger. Or maybe he thinks knowing where he is and what he's doing would be painful for you."
no subject
"Solas wouldn't hurt people," Cole emphatically states, not really realizing that poor 9S doesn't know how he got 'hurts people' from 'painful for him.' "There must be a different reason."
no subject
How can he explain this in a way that Cole will understand?
"Sometimes... people do things, or know about things that would make the ones that care about them sad if they knew."
He thinks of the android who wanted 2B and him to find their missing lover, who had left on a quest for revenge without her knowledge.
...He thinks of the way 2B and 21O quietly and not so subtly try to steer him away from prying into things, because...
Because......
"So they lie to protect the ones they care about. Or they leave, so they don't have to lie."
no subject
He thinks. Cole still has a bit of trouble grasping onto things like 'explaining your emotions'. But if what Solas was going to do might make Cole sad but Solas leaving definitely made Cole sad, then was there any option in this that ended up with Cole being happy?
He really doesn't like this. Maybe more information might make things easier for 9S.
"He wouldn't let me know. Awake yet alone. He's made mistakes and they hide behind the mirrors. And then I can't see further."
Okay more information might not make it easier for poor 9S.
no subject
The rest of it... Yeah he's got nothing.
"Um... what do you mean by hiding behind the mirrors?"
no subject
Sorry 9S, were you expecting something more? Because it's not happening. Cole's answering like this is a perfectly good answer and he can't see any reason why 9S should be bugging him for more details and more information.
no subject
9S frowns. This guy talks in puzzles. "Sorry, I don't understand... But sometimes people don't understand the effect they have on the people around them. If someone has feelings and emotions... they're not always logical. That's what it means to live, I think?"
9S sounds a little uncertain about that.
"Don't uh. Take it personally." That Solas is a butt?
Man, this comforting thing is hard. "Anyway, you still have your other friends, right? I think they still appreciate your company."
no subject
Still, for all of 9S's confusion about comforting, it seems to have worked. Cole brightens up a little at the mention of his other friends, nodding slightly. Because he does! He does have friends and they do appreciate his company.
"They do. Strange boy, odd, why him. But also friend, family, my weird kid, thank you Cole, that was a very good thing you did."
His friends still thought him odd. But they also thought him useful and, most importantly, thought him friends.
no subject
"See? That's great!"
Too be they're not here, though. He'd love to get their thoughts on this guy... possibly in a more understandable format.
9S finally takes a tiny sip of the wine, before making a face. Wow. Humans used to drink this? 9S puts the glass down... somewhere. Someone else can have it. Or one of the servants can clear it away.
"So, Cole. What are you gonna do for the rest of the night?" 9S casts his gaze across the dance floor. "Are you gonna dance with anyone?"
:3c??
